Sorry if AIBU is not the most appropriate place to post this thread in.

Would you say Jersey is a well known holiday destination? Have you heard of it before?

LilacPoppy · 04/07/2022 23:18

Wow, er yes I have op.

SaggyBlinders · 04/07/2022 23:20

Yes I know Jersey, Guernsey, Alderley, Sark and Herm are the Channel Islands. Closer to France than the UK. Just finished reading The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society, and it has a map of the Channel Islands in the front, had only heard of Jersey and Guernsey before that.

I'm sure I know a few people who haven't heard of Jersey. I worked with a girl once who didn't know if Manchester was North or South of London. Oh and someone else who didn't know that Cornwall and Devon are next to each other.

I also remember something about really strong tides and the ferry being really expensive if we wanted to take the car. Not sure if it is the same for all the CIs but on Geurnsey you legally had to trim your hedges because of narrow roads.

RoseMartha · 04/07/2022 22:42

Yes and have been there and to Guernsey, Sark and Herm.

Ooh how was Sark @RoseMartha it really appeals to me

WimpoleHat · 04/07/2022 23:21

This is bizarre! Yes, of course.

iklboo · 04/07/2022 23:21

Is there a point to this thread?

willstarttomorrow · 04/07/2022 23:22

And they did not have roundabouts, you had to filter in turn. May be totally outdated info now though. The battle of the Flowers was a thing.

BritWifeInUSA · 04/07/2022 23:23

I don’t even live in the UK and my co-workers have heard of Jersey.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 04/07/2022 23:24

Not only have I heard of it - I had a weird childhood crush on John Nettles, and used to dream of living there with him. We would have solved crimes together.

Maurepas · 04/07/2022 23:25

Jersey is not part of United Kingdom. It is part of Great Britain. It has different taxes and some different laws from UK.

RampantIvy · 04/07/2022 23:25

I have been to Sark three times @MysteriousMonkey. I love it. I'll post about it tomorrow.

EntertainingandFactual · 04/07/2022 23:25

Yes of course!

LovelyRaita · 04/07/2022 23:25

Well, yes, you'd think people would have heard of Jersey, but I had a conversation with a shop assistant in South London this week who had never heard of Carlisle and remained very dubious about whether it was really in the UK.

Dixiechickonhols · 04/07/2022 23:25

QueSyrahSyrah · 04/07/2022 23:10

I saw that too @Dixiechickonhols, but they're not famed for their intelligence in there so I'd hope the average 20-something might have a bit more of a grasp of basic British geography (and history) Confused

I was surprised none had though. I thought most would have heard of it due to Channel Islands being only part of British Isles occupied by Germany in WW2, I thought all school children would have been taught about that.

mm40 · 04/07/2022 23:27

Jersey also has a maximum speed limit of 40mph and is chock full of Porsches and Aston Martins etc.

SoVeryVeryTiredToday · 04/07/2022 23:27

🥔😀

LemonJuiceFromConcentrate · 04/07/2022 23:27

Maybe OP is an intern with the Jersey tourist board and someone’s asked her to do a bit of low-budget promotional work

Plasmodesmata · 04/07/2022 23:28

Is this like the conspiracy theory that Australia doesn't exist? Jersey is a place nobody has heard of?

MuddlingThroughLifeLittleByLittle · 04/07/2022 23:30

Yes of course WHY do u ask

SouthOfFrance · 04/07/2022 23:32

Have you heard of a place called Jersey?
I've heard it's South of the Mersey
You can sail or fly there
For a very small fare
And then take a day trip to Guernsey

SaggyBlinders · 04/07/2022 23:33

I didn't learn about the German occupation of the Channel Islands at school. History was my favourite subject and I did it at GCSE and A level. I didn't know that the Channel Islands were occupied til I watched/read The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society.

VampireAtt1re · 04/07/2022 23:33

Yes, I've enjoyed a week's holiday on the island of Jersey

CredibilityProblem · 04/07/2022 23:35

I could even draw you a rough sketch map.

MrsIsobelCrawley · 04/07/2022 23:36

ChagSameachDoreen · 04/07/2022 23:17

Yea because I'm not an imbecile.

If you haven't heard of Jersey, you are an imbecile.

But if you don't know your Balkan from your Baltic states, then you get the become Foreign Secretary like Liz Truss.

Nat6999 · 04/07/2022 23:36

Yes, I've been several times, it's like going abroad but being in a British seaside place. It is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been, the people are friendly, it is clean & there are some lovely places to visit, lots of history as well.
