Have you heard of a place called Jersey before?

Sorry if AIBU is not the most appropriate place to post this thread in.

Would you say Jersey is a well known holiday destination? Have you heard of it before?

OP posts:

Hi all,
Just swinging by to say that we think it unlikely that you'll ever find out why this poster wanted to know if you were familiar with Bergerac Country because they're no longer on the platform. Do please continue to reminisce about family hols etc but don't be disappointed if we never learn the OP's motivation...

SmashingEgg · 05/07/2022 08:23

My parents have a home there, on the same road as the Newels murder house.

toomuchlaundry · 05/07/2022 08:27

I was in an episode of Bergerac. Caught on camera whilst slightly stalking John Nettles!

TeenDivided · 05/07/2022 08:31

Can any of the locals solve the mystery of the changing cuddly toy in the tree between St Marys & St John's?

QueSyrahSyrah · 05/07/2022 09:09

The OP's gone; so this was either some kind of clumsy marketing research, or OP was the one brashly trying to prove to someone that nobody had heard of it, and is now hiding under a rock somewhere ashamed at their own naivety?

spanishsummers · 05/07/2022 09:15

Or maybe they had a poor grasp of geography or a learning issue and didn't know. Hope not, as not one poster has considered that possibly in forming their reply. The scramble to show ability is astounding.

NovemberRain2 · 05/07/2022 09:21

Is this about the Katherine Ryan podcast last week where she explained where Jersey was?

MrsDrDear · 05/07/2022 09:23

Many holidays years ago.

I remember the shell garden and butterfly farm (both probably long gone)

Love Jersey.

RainCoffeeBook · 05/07/2022 09:46

Good grief, I refuse to believe people are this ignorant...

I’ve not heard the podcast but she’s Canadian isn’t she? Maybe she just hadn’t heard of it which would be understandable as she’s not British.

riesenrad · 05/07/2022 08:13

I'll add a question though - how many of you have heard of Chausey? I hadn't until a few years ago. It's a collection of islands between Jersey and France, and comes under France. I'd like to go but it's quite awkward to get to because of tides and there aren't that many trips.

Had a look on googlemaps at those islands recently as I was visiting Mont St Michel and was of the opinion that if I went up the Contentin coast, I should be able to see Jersey from there. But I never did it. I did check the ferry times from France to the Channel Islands though and they are few and far between! Not surprising really as its a foreign country to France!

TeenDivided · 05/07/2022 14:46

@AchatAVendre You can get to Jersey from St Malo easily enough.

I suppose the real challenge is asking how many people have heard of Lihou, Brecqhou, or the Ecrehous? 😅

Will the Minquiers do you?

WatchoRulo · 05/07/2022 15:06

AllTheDancers · 04/07/2022 22:40

Are you mainly asking British people if they have heard of the well known part of the UK which is called Jersey in the Channel Islands? Why wouldn't they?

Are you in Britain/British?

Jersey isn't in the UK.

The shell garden has. The new owners were a bit gratuitous in their destruction of it in my view!

Not sure about the butterfly farm - never come across one - there used to be one on the Isles of Scilly, but not sure if that is still there either.

I remember the butterfly farm! But I haven't been back for many years...

TeenDivided · 05/07/2022 15:41

I think the butterfly farm also went a good number of years ago.
However Jersey Zoo now has a great walk through butterfly area.

We've still got some shell ornaments in a box somewhere, it was tradition to buy something every visit😊

MrsDrDear · 05/07/2022 18:34

I'm glad I wasn't imagining the butterfly farm!

SmileyPiuPiu · 05/07/2022 18:38

Hahahaha this is so random!

Yes

mdinbc · 05/07/2022 19:34

My mum was from Jersey. I've only been there twice, but somehow it felt like home.

liveforsummer · 05/07/2022 21:59

CherrySocks · 04/07/2022 23:04

If you mean the one in the Channel Islands, yes it's very familiar and I've been on holiday there at least three times. I live in Southern England though. It might not be so well known to people who live further away. Personally I can't name all the Scottish islands for example.

Im Scottish. I absolutely couldn't name all of the Scottish islands off the top of my head either but definitely know of Jersey and where it is. Don't necessarily think of it as a major holiday destination not know the location and of the cows and potatoes

Theluggage15 · 05/07/2022 22:17

I live in Jersey and had heard of it before we moved here years ago. I have had a few people ask me if I like living ‘abroad’.

Enidcat5 · 05/07/2022 22:31

Did op mistake mumsnet for Google?

RoseMartha · 06/07/2022 18:06

@MysteriousMonkey
It was a while ago but I liked it we hired bicycles. You feel like you have gone back in time a bit. Peaceful. Calm.
