Have you heard of a place called Jersey before?

Sorry if AIBU is not the most appropriate place to post this thread in.

Would you say Jersey is a well known holiday destination? Have you heard of it before?

@Maurepas Jersey is part of the British Isles not Great Britain. The United Kingdom is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland - so England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. It’s confusing!

ddl1 · 04/07/2022 23:39

Do you mean Jersey in the Channel Islands? Yes, I think most people- at least in the UK- would have heard of it!

Siepie · 04/07/2022 23:41

Yes, I went their on holiday as a child (and watched a documentary about money laundering there just the other day)

Not only have I heard of it - I had a weird childhood crush on John Nettles, and used to dream of living there with him. We would have solved crimes together.

😂

Nat6999 · 04/07/2022 23:42

The first holiday I had there was brilliant, I'd gone with my parents & brother, we stayed in St Brelades Bay, the staff at the hotel we stayed in were all young & I used to go out on pub crawls with them & to nightclubs, I made friends that I'm still in touch with now, I nearly jacked my job in & went to work there.

elephantoverthehill · 04/07/2022 23:42

When I was on holiday in Guernsey I was shopping in a supermarket and asked a shop worker where the potatoes were. She replied ' The next aisle'. So I popped over to Jersey.
My DB lives there so I hope I know about it.

CredibilityProblem · 04/07/2022 23:44

My sample of 2 Gen Z, who were sadly deprived of John Nettles and Charlie Hungerford growing up, offers
a) It's an island? Off the coast of Britain somewhere?
and
b) it's in the UK? And I've heard the phrase Jersey Shore so I guess it's on the coast?

Basically we need to bring back Bergerac immediately for the sake of our children's education.

Flappyflaps · 04/07/2022 23:44

jersey is beautiful,….the rules to live there are to have £10m in the bank or have lived there for something like 15 years already… then you are allowed to buy a property there!

it is Expensive to stay in season but to me it feels like the “best bits of Cornwall”

when I retire I’m going to go there a lot as have friends that live there.

I like the laws of jersey mostly very sensible fair and common sense IMO!

Runnerduck34 · 04/07/2022 23:45

Yes and I've been there. Most ( all? ) adults born in Britain will have heard of the channel islands and Jersey and Guernsey

TabithaTittlemouse · 04/07/2022 23:45

😂Are you okay @youwontwith ?

Owlilac · 04/07/2022 23:46

I've heard of it because of the milk. I've not had much reason to know about the Channel Islands though.

EveSix · 04/07/2022 23:46

I'm crying😂

WisteriaLodge · 04/07/2022 23:46

I take it you're not from the UK OP because everyone in the country knows about Jersey..

Pinklimey · 04/07/2022 23:47

Is it near jumper?

RafaistheKingofClay · 04/07/2022 23:49

Dixiechickonhols · 04/07/2022 23:03

Of course I’ve been twice. Watching love island with my daughter I was surprised none of the contestants appeared to know about Guernsey - Andrew’s not from England. Minds were blown when he explained it was nearer France.

Given the number of times I’ve had to explain where I’m from to confused looking English people this does not surprise me at all.

If you’re lucky they’ll have heard of Jersey. I’m pretty sure the person that responded with ‘that’s up north’ had confused Guernsey and the Isle of Man.

PickAChew · 04/07/2022 23:51

You know that Jersey Royals didn't get their name by wearing jumpers, right?

LongDarkTeatime · 04/07/2022 23:53

Jersey … nah, nope, no … never heard of it 😉

Now Guernsey, that’s a fabulous place 😄 with the BEST beaches 🌊🏖
Lots of donkeys but no crapauds (if you get it, you’ll know 😂)

Oceanus · 04/07/2022 23:55

Now that Abramovich's assets in Jersey were seized, maybe they can film Jersey Shore meets Love Island at his place and put Jersey on the (Channel Islands) map. I wonder if he's got a stripper pole and a kinky room!

Is there a point to this thread?

Not as far as I can tell, no.

This thread’s just here to bring out the MN donkeys.

Pinklimey · 05/07/2022 00:00

@PickAChew if that was to me, yes I do. It was one of those jokes I couldn't stop.

RaspberryParfait · 05/07/2022 00:13

We were just talking about Jersey the other day. I was remembering the absolutely beautiful almost deserted beach we went to in early July (26 years ago!) while I was pregnant with DC1. Saying we should go back.

Does anyone know the name of it - lots of stone steps down to it, like a cove with cliffs either side and big sandy coloured rock formations which the water comes through, lovely soft yellow sand. Been to beaches in most parts of the world since but never forgotten how pristine that beach was! Bet it’s not like that now.

channelislander · 05/07/2022 00:15

I mean yeah, I've heard of Jersey. I do live in Guernsey, though, so it's not exactly far.

QueSyrahSyrah · 05/07/2022 00:17

@RaspberryParfait If there are steps down it could be Portelet, Plemont or Beauport I think. I know they've all got steps, not sure if there are others.

MatildaJayne · 05/07/2022 00:17

Jersey, of course, and Guernsey and Alderney and Sark, but I didn’t remember Herm, sorry!

I’m old enough to remember Bergerac being new and was pleased that Leela from Doctor Who was in it! And ‘Enemy at the Door’ was about the Nazi occupation of Guernsey. I’d definitely heard of Jersey before that. Gold top milk from Jersey cows.
