Sorry if AIBU is not the most appropriate place to post this thread in.

Would you say Jersey is a well known holiday destination? Have you heard of it before?

OP posts:

Been there sailing, sounds grand eh?
Truth was, old wooden yacht not very comfortable.
Jersey Guernsey and Alderney all have different governments and slightly different currencies and laws to each other and to UK.

balalake · 05/07/2022 07:17

I think fairly well known, though in my case because ancestors were born there.

AllTheDancers · 04/07/2022 22:40

Are you mainly asking British people if they have heard of the well known part of the UK which is called Jersey in the Channel Islands? Why wouldn't they?

Are you in Britain/British?

Because there are many ignorant British people who lack any form of general knowledge.

Not really borne out by these responses, is it?

There are many ignorant people in all countries who lack any form of general knowledge. I was recently in the States and on hearing my Scottish accent, was informed that the speaker also came from Scotland. "Oh, which part" I asked. "Yorkshire" was the answer. And I am often referred to as "English" when abroad. When I point out that I'm British, some people will try to correct me by saying its all the same country, or that Scotland "is part of England".

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 05/07/2022 07:26

I think OPs who start a thread like this and then never return should be banned from MN.

Now we’ve established that EVERYONE has heard of Jersey, do you want to fill us in on the reason for the questions, OP? Or was posting the opening post enough for you to get your thrills today?

Yes a place that could send you to prison for life if you had a termination, even though the termination was not performed on the Island.

You can now have a termination up to 12 weeks.

So off my list of places to visit.

I had no idea about this so looked it up.

Seems they allow termination at any point if it's likely to cause 'permanent injury to the physical or mental health of the Woman' the latter of which I suspect could be argued in a majority of unwanted pregnancies so not strictly true.

Seriously

Pah! Mainstream! How many of the Paternosters can you name?

Born and bred in Jersey. When I lived in the USA, this led to some... interesting... conversations!

@PhotoDad were they like the interesting conversations I had in the US as a late teen when discussing hobbies? "I play rugby; I'm a hooker" was treated as 2 separate pastimes 🤭😱😅

@youwontwith I think if you're working for the Jersey marketing board you're asking in the wrong place.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 04/07/2022 23:24

Not only have I heard of it - I had a weird childhood crush on John Nettles, and used to dream of living there with him. We would have solved crimes together.

No that was me. Me!

ZenNudist · 05/07/2022 07:33

What? Yes I've heard of Jersey and have long wanted to go on holiday there. Why are you asking?. It's a bit like asking if I've heard of the Scilly Islands.

cakeorwine · 05/07/2022 07:33

I wonder if people who haven't heard of Jersey haven't replied to this thread.

Like the OP?

5foot5 · 05/07/2022 07:39

Yes I know Jersey, Guernsey, Alderley, Sark and Herm are the Channel Islands. Closer to France than the UK.

Actually @SaggyBlinders the Channel Island is called Alderney. There is Alderley Edge in Cheshire but I wouldn't call it a holiday destination, more a day out.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 05/07/2022 07:40

yes - expensive choice for a holiday destination

5foot5 · 05/07/2022 07:42

I am sure I read recently there is going to be a remake of Bergerac and John Nettles might have a cameo

mnahmnah · 05/07/2022 07:44

A good bit of PR for Jersey, this…

Especially as OP has posted and gone

dottiedodah · 05/07/2022 07:50

Maybe you are not from UK or quite young .jersey is a beautiful island between uk and France. Set in the Channel Islands it has a warm climate and lovely scenery. We'll worth a visit !

Yes I agree. There are many ignorant people in all countries. Just because some posters here have heard of Jersey doesn't mean that all British are aware.

10 pages in folks. The OP has left the building!

Might be more representative to ask if French people are aware of it.

I spend a lot of time in Normandy and am aware that the Channel Islands are one of the last bastions of the old Norman language/dialect of French, but very few French people in Normandy know this. And almost none outwith Normandy. British people also use a number of old Norman words/expressions in their day to day speech which again has shared links with the old dialects of Normandy and Jersey - words like bail, profit a prendre, assizes, bailiff, force majeure, estoppel, mortgage, jury, - I could go on. "Mortgage" is a particularly interesting one, because modern French uses "hypothec".

WifeMotherWorkRepeat · 05/07/2022 08:08

Yes!

SleeplessInEngland · 05/07/2022 08:10

The OP’s fucked off so I guess this was a troll thread. 10 pages so mission accomplished.

riesenrad · 05/07/2022 08:12

I'd think anyone in their late 40s or older would know it from Bergerac (which they are now remaking, as a pp said). And there has also been the more recent Real Housewives of Jersey series. And then of course anyone with any historical knowledge will know the Channel Islands were occupied by the Nazi regime in WW2 (and still bear the marks of that occupation today).

When you do a Google search you generally have to add "Channel Islands" to your search as otherwise you get a load of results about New Jersey. There was a story the other week about an American couple who went to Jersey thinking they were booking a trip to New Jersey. The length of the flights didn't give them a clue :) but they really enjoyed the trip and said they will be back Grin They went to do the Durrell Challenge which is a charity run for Jersey Zoo.

riesenrad · 05/07/2022 08:13

I'll add a question though - how many of you have heard of Chausey? I hadn't until a few years ago. It's a collection of islands between Jersey and France, and comes under France. I'd like to go but it's quite awkward to get to because of tides and there aren't that many trips.

5foot5 · 05/07/2022 08:17

Give her the benefit of the doubt for now.

She posted late last night so might have just been going to bed. Then this morning might not have had time to check and be hurrying out to work. After all she wasn't to know there might have been so many responses. If she genuinely hasn't heard of Jersey she might think very few others have and been expecting about four replies!
