Should a male teacher have done this?

During a residential school trip, enter a girls' shared dorm to wake them up?
To my mind it's a safeguarding issue, and there was also a female teacher on the trip who could have done it.
I wanted to seek others' opinions before raising it.
Thanks.

I don't see anything wrong with it. Would it be OK for a female teacher to go in and wake up a dorm of teenage boys?

Male teacher walking into a dorm of sleeping female children? Nothing at all? Course not.

Would it be OK for a female teacher to go in and wake up a dorm of teenage boys?

Handily, there are about 98 previous posts asking the same thing, so lots of helpful info upthread Smile

Some extraordinary answers here!

i was in teaching & teacher-training for 35 years, including running numerous residential courses.

Never have I entered a kids’ dormitory when they were still in bed or rising.

i only once entered a dorm without another teacher being there. It was daytime, a medical emergency (kid collapsed), I blocked the door open & sent kids to get another adult.

I’m statistically highly unlikely to abuse kids of either sex.

But safeguarding applies to everyone. Nobody is singled out.

Laurawharton3 · 04/07/2022 01:00

I think uabu. We had male teachers come in tell us to keep it down or do checks to make sure we arnt sneaking around. Nothing untoward what are they really going to do when there's a bunch of students all in the same room. Tbf this is why they used to do checks always with another member of staff but guess what they was normally another male. But sticking there head in to say wake up or go to bed normally just the one.

willstarttomorrow · 04/07/2022 01:16

I think we only have one side of the story here. Knocking on the door first, 'are you decent and time to wake up is okay'? although due to this kind of crap most male teachers I know would avoid it. Flip the situation and a room full of boys and a female teacher and most people would not have an issue (despite a few female teachers being in court for innapropriare relationships with teen students). OP- you seem to have an issue with this teacher, without the other side of the story no one can really make any conclusion. I am amazed any teacher these days volunteers for any residential. It is bloody hard 24/7 unpaid work and parents just seem to complain thinking the teacher is on some kind of jolly hols at their expense.

FootieMama · 04/07/2022 02:06

This thread is weird. Who thinks it's OK for a male teacher to enter a room full of teen girls half asleep and likely half dressed? If he had just knocked the door and called ok. But go in the room? Why is so many people saying that is OK?
I can't even imagine any teacher doing that.

THIS IS WHAT HOW A NORMAL TEACHER BEHAVES.

milkyaqua · 04/07/2022 03:12

Exactly.

So many people who don't understand the meaning of the word "enter" when referring to a room, also.

"We don't know what he did."

Yes, we do! He entered the room full of sleeping 13 year olds.

My job is to manage allegations against professionals who work with children & this is not a safeguarding issue

ThingsThatMakeYouGoHmmmmmmmmm · 04/07/2022 05:44

Fuck being a male teacher.

RachaelN · 04/07/2022 05:47

You're looking for something to ruin this teacher. If you have a problem go to the school and deal with the issue appropriately. It seems that the phone issue is the problem here, not him waking them up.

Really, Lily? That's interesting. What guidelines do you work with? They seem to be different to those teachers have to follow.

Maireas · 04/07/2022 06:24

You're right, @FootiMama, those are the rules me and my colleagues have to adhere to. Regardless of sex or orientation.

It's obvious that it's not your job.

Autumn61 · 04/07/2022 07:22

Yet you somehow manage to give off the impression that you’re angry mum looking for a cause. He probably put the light on and told them it was time to get up.In this case I think you are being unreasonable.

2bazookas · 04/07/2022 07:23

Depends how he did it.

Knocks loudly on door, before opening it a little and calling in "Morning , Girls, wakey wakey, breakfast at 8" would not offend me at all.

Remmy123 · 04/07/2022 07:34

He is their teacher ffs

Watapalava · 03/07/2022 21:06

Walking into the room too isn’t a big deal

its not like he walked into a single girls room

there were multiple kids there

it really wouldn’t bother me but then I don’t presume all men are pervs and even if they were they’d have no opportunity in a rooms full of kids

Paranoia at its best. I think you’re all a bit sick tbh

Would it be OK if he walked into a girls' changing room, just because there were "multiple kids" in there - changing - so he couldn't do anything?

Where do you think girls get changed on school trips?

Is it, aye?

What kind of wording would a set of safeguarding guidelines / policy have around teachers and dorm rooms during residential trips?

Nice and easy for you to provide us with if your job is what you say it is.

VWCJW · 04/07/2022 07:48

I reckon there is a lot more to this. We’re there only girls on the trip? Did he suspect something going on. I remember at secondary school, girls smoking hash in the dormitory and sneaking boys in.

missdemeanors · 04/07/2022 07:51

Christ no wonder there's a teacher shortage

missdemeanors · 04/07/2022 07:51

Christ no wonder there's a teacher shortage

So we should remove safguarding so we get more teachers ? Why would you want teachers unable to follow procedures?

Diggin · 04/07/2022 08:14

Sadly I agree with the sentiments. Drop out rate for NQTs now 40% after 5 years. People with options work elsewhere as stress levels and expectations of teachers are massive plus the fact you can be bullied and intimidated by over zealous managers seeking to hit unrealistic targets.
