To think people these days are very entitled?

I keep reading about people demanding high wages for jobs that require little or no skills or education. AIBU to think if you want more money than improve your skill set to get a higher paying job?

I've worked my fair share of shop and bar jobs, so I'm not putting people down who do these jobs. But when I wanted more money I did night courses (along side my shop work and looking after my kids) and used those qualifications to get an admin job which then led to promotions until I eventually worked my way up to a decent salary. It took years.

Demanding higher wages for jobs that are low paid because literally anyone could do them is an insult to people who have spent years in college to get a degree or years learning a trade or years working their way up the ladder.

Electricians, plumbers, lawyers, accountants etc are paid more because they have a certain skill set. Not just anyone can re-wire your house or defend you in court.

I just feel like people dont want to spend years putting time and effort into improving themselves, and that's fine but to then demand loads of money when they can't be arsed to put the effort in it takes to get a high paying job is the hight of entitlement.

What about bin men? They don't need a degree to do that job but it's an unpleasant job that not many people would want to do and if we didn't have bin men we'd all be a bit screwed. Pay isn't only about skillset it's also about how much we value the job itself and to make up for doing unpleasant tasks and loads of other factors.

Ducksinthebath · 25/06/2022 11:30

You've a very snobbish attitude. The value of the service provided, as well as experience/excellence in providing it is an import factor, not just academic training.

Talk about hauling up the ladder after yourself…

Who is KyaClark then? And why are they correcting your spelling?

Fml1980 · 25/06/2022 11:35

So who's going to be a carer? Or work in child care? How about those people that clean the hospitals?
Serve you in restaurants and shops?
We need people on every level to have a working society!

Doublevodka · 25/06/2022 11:35

People want better paid jobs to keep up with the cost of living. Or maybe try and get on the property ladder. Both of which seem pretty impossible for those in both professions and low skilled jobs right now.

AmbushedByCake · 25/06/2022 11:35

Do you actually mean high wages or just a wage that a person can actually live on? No matter what the job I can't see why any person should be busting their ass for 40+ hours a week and still not be able to pay the rent and fill the car with petrol at the end of it.

KyaClark · 25/06/2022 11:36

I was correcting OPs spelling because if you're going to post a goady, snobbish thread the least you could do is spell correctly.

Skinnermarink · 25/06/2022 11:36

How did you get on the property ladder OP? How did you fund the extra training you did?

There is 10% inflation at the moment and salaries haven't been rising in real terms to buy housing etc

SocksAndTheCity · 25/06/2022 11:41

Which jobs are you talking about OP? It would be helpful to have a list of the people you mean so we can help decide who deserves to work like a dog for fuck all.

I think many hard working people on minimum wage, 50-plus hrs per week with no overtime bonus, and renting dreadfully tiny properties at 70% of their take home pay are thoroughly sick of being told 'its been a bad year, so we cant pay more than 1% more for salaries, we will stiff you on pension contributions, and if you dont like it, leave!'

.... Then Charlotte (daughter of said managers) gers a 3rd pony, mummy buys a new Range Rover in white with all the leather extras, the family go to Val d' Isere and the Bahamas for their holidays, and daddy buys a holiday cottage with his bonus in Cornwall...

If you think i am making this up, the CEO of Birmingham airport - where most staff are on/around min wage - has just given himself a £200,000 or 50% pay rise... And he is doing an awful job with chaos there.

Normal working people have just had enough of greed at the top, underhand 'jobs for the boys' and so on. I hear Boris is trying to get Carrie a £100,000 civil service job... She isn't qualified or experienced enough for that level at all.

Good luck to those hard working people who could easily get their 10% pay rise if the managers halved their greed.

Charlotte doesn't need a third pony and Tabitha doesn't 'need' a new Range Rover. They need a wake up call on where the money has come from, mostly the workers at the bottom.

RepublicOfNarnia · 25/06/2022 11:41

So by your logic people like say Boris Johnson, Rees Mog, Cameron all just put in a lot of graft to get to their positions?

The thing is, people who share your world view are actually cherished by those who hold and withold wealth. Because in your view people should have to struggle and 'work harder'. You see suffering as a rite of passage. Society needs people to hold views like yours to maintain the status quo. Reminds me of the shop floor manager when I worked in retail. He earned £1.50 more than us but by his conduct you'd have thought he was the heir to the retail chain.

It's such a naive world view but so many people uphold it, so it's just sad.

DrinkFeckArseBrick · 25/06/2022 11:41

I dont know, I see a lot of jobs that are skilled and that I couldn't do (care and nursery workers for example) that also have long hours that are minimum wage. I dont think it's right that people can work full time on minimum wage and still have to use food banks. There is something fundamentally wrong with that scenario

Pumperthepumper · 25/06/2022 11:42

Who looked after your kids during the night classes?

I was going to reply that. I’m a community carer. For the job I’ve got I had to college full time for 7 months, I’ve had to do 4 manual handling/health and safety days. I had to do my care certificate which is 15 workbooks which I had to complete within 4 weeks around everything else. I’ve done my NVQ1 and I’m starting my 2nd. I’ve got over 20 certificates related to my job. I’m still only getting paid 10 pence above minimum wage and it’s not an easy job. I chose this job because I love it and it’s the only one with hours I can fit around my very unreliable and erratic childcare. Carers deserve more than this, no wonder there’s such a shortage when we jump through hoops and put up with so much for mostly minimum wage.

ThatPosterIsSoRight · 25/06/2022 11:42

If everyone trained and studied and got themselves a better career or skilled trade, who would provide care in care homes, or serve you in a shop, empty your bins, or serve you in a restaurant?

With a lack of young immigrants (cheers Brexit), the large boomer generation retiring , and a big proportion of young people going to university, these jobs also need to be paid enough to live on to attract any staff.

Ihatethenewlook · 25/06/2022 11:43

And I work mostly nights around my oh btw. The days I’m working I don’t see my family at all.

DismantledKing · 25/06/2022 11:44

(Sorry I fully appreciate care is skilled, it’s just not paid as though it is)
