To think people these days are very entitled?

I keep reading about people demanding high wages for jobs that require little or no skills or education. AIBU to think if you want more money than improve your skill set to get a higher paying job?

I've worked my fair share of shop and bar jobs, so I'm not putting people down who do these jobs. But when I wanted more money I did night courses (along side my shop work and looking after my kids) and used those qualifications to get an admin job which then led to promotions until I eventually worked my way up to a decent salary. It took years.

Demanding higher wages for jobs that are low paid because literally anyone could do them is an insult to people who have spent years in college to get a degree or years learning a trade or years working their way up the ladder.

Electricians, plumbers, lawyers, accountants etc are paid more because they have a certain skill set. Not just anyone can re-wire your house or defend you in court.

I just feel like people dont want to spend years putting time and effort into improving themselves, and that's fine but to then demand loads of money when they can't be arsed to put the effort in it takes to get a high paying job is the hight of entitlement.

I thought that there was a shortage of lorry drivers after the pandemic so supermarkets had hiked up wages for them or do I remember incorrectly?

Excellent point about prison service workers on 23k.

HMP Send up the road from me in surrey.
23k per year = c1400 pounds pcm take home after tax, ni, pension contribs.

1 bed flats and studios start for rent around here at 995pcm, before band e council tax (£165pcm), and the car required to get to the prison gates as there is no bus service anywhere near....

Doing those sums, that means 100% of a warders salary is spent on rent, ctax and travel to work, BEFORE bills, food, clothes.

Must be A LOT of warders living at home with their parents as, with a 3 % pay rise they are getting poorer as rents are going up 10% pa here easily, before bills, diesel etc.

Whole financial situation falling apart.

Unless they do a ridiculous amount of overtime and bring home the equivalent of a 40-50k salary...... that's the only way to survive as a prison officer. It's a shitter for family life, though as you're never home!

"Why? Shouldn't people just pay a decent wage if they want these services? As they're having to at the moment due to the labour shortage, inflation and wage increases."
They should pay a decent wage. But a lot of people who want those services aren't prepared to. They expect to be able to pay a wage is is far below anything they would be prepared to work for themselves or expect their children to work for.

lancsgirl85 · 26/06/2022 12:12

Just to add that prison officers get paid an enhanced rate to do overtime, too. So they end up bringing home way above the basic salary take home if they want to put the extra hours in. It's possible to take home in excess of 3k if you work flat out for the month with overtime.

@lancsgirl85 @Diamond7272 quoted me but I actually said probation service officers, no enhancements, no overtime. They are also solely responsible for the risk management of those offenders including child protection cases, lifers, domestic abuse and registered sex offenders. Even the senior pracs earn £29k and they manage the most dangerous people in the country, whilst no one really knows what they do, TV dramas give ridiculously inaccurate portrayals and then they get castigated when someone commits a serious further offence, when other agencies weren't listening to them and they had 150% of an acceptable case load. Maybe they should all just "better themselves". What happens is that people like me get tired of it and leave and now there is a national recruitment issue because they can't get people to do what they need for the poor salaries.

And yes prison officers can earn enhancements, they also get attacked a lot and work in often horrendous conditions.
