To wonder if no one on Mumsnet believes that trans women are women?

I’ve been lurking on the site for months, enjoying AIBU and laughing at some of the posts.

But yesterday I commented on a topic regarding the language around trans women, and the views expressed were very extreme.

Is there anyone at all on Mumsnet who, like me, did not realise how anti-trans this site is? Does anyone believe, unreservedly, that trans women are women?

YABU - trans women are not women.
YANBU - I support trans rights

You’ve set up a false dichotomy there.

I do not believe unreservedly that trans women are women. However, I support trans rights - I am just concerned with the overlap with women’s rights and how that is managed in law. I’m not sure what you mean by ‘trans rights’ as you haven’t defined it. I support the rights of trans people to live as they choose to represent and not be discriminated against for that. I do not support self-ID in law, however.

This. Excellent response.

Your voting options are unfair and not mutually exclusive.

SoupDragon · 24/06/2022 18:21

I'm not "anti trans" I believe that trans women are trans women and trans men are trans men. Quite straightforward.

comealongponds · 24/06/2022 18:21

I support the right of trans people to dress and act however they like as long as it doesn’t infringe on other peoples rights (eg right to single sex spaces, sports etc). But trans women are not women. They are trans women.

frequently they are trans women who still have male genitalia, male size and strength, facial hair, and a male attitude that they are better than women and male belief that they're entitled to invade and take over womens spaces

onlywhenidream · 24/06/2022 18:21

Anti trans != not believing TWAW

Or you are saying sone trans people are anti trans ... a strange position to take

Dreadful voting options and just shows how little the 'trans women are women' crowd understand the debate.

Could be this, or could be a deliberate thing to set it up that way. I like to assume good faith on the part of posters though.

I can't vote because I support Trans rights, but I do not think that transwomen are exactly the same as women. That is clearly not true.

I do think transwomen have rights though, they just do not include right to every single sex space in my opinion (and I don't think that's an uncommon view...outside of Instagram anyway)

Hoppinggreen · 24/06/2022 18:22

To answer your voting question yes to both options

Being pro trans rights, and also believing transwomen are not women/ transmen are not men, isn't a thing. They're mutually exclusive.

How so?

StolenCookie · 24/06/2022 18:22

Sigh. I really wasn’t trying to be inflammatory.

The main thing I want to know is if anyone here believes, like me, that trans women are women. That’s all.

Very few people here do :)

glowbabe · 24/06/2022 18:23

You cannot biologically change your sex . But saying they I have no problems with anyone identifying as male or female and no one should be abused mentally or physically because of it .

onlywhenidream · 24/06/2022 18:23

What is a woman ?

Am I one ?

How would I know ?

Thank you

Mostess · 24/06/2022 18:23

The trans issue has been hijacked on here by a bunch of people who call themselves feminists but aren't really, because they want to exclude trans women from the definition of women. I don't think most people on mumsnet agree with them, but they are loud and aggressive so the rest of us tend to just ignore them. Mumsnet management seem unable to deal with their behaviour.

I'm thoroughly GC but don't be a dick.

MajorCarolDanvers · 24/06/2022 18:24

I think that those who are fully transitioned - live as women, have had the counselling, hormones and operations are women.

I believe that those who just declare themselves to be women are not.

I fully support trans rights.

I fully support womens rights.

One should not be at the expense of another.

Then why not have it as

YANBU- trans women are women
YANBU- trans women are not women.

?

Why shoe horn the rights thing in?

Transwomen are transwomen and women and women. It's really not hard. And saying the above does not mean we don't believe in trans rights. It means we believe sex is real and gender is a social construct.

No one can change sex it is a biological impossibility. But transwomen can leave free as transwomen and that is to be applauded in a free society.

darlingdodo · 24/06/2022 18:25

I don’t believe trans women are actual women. In fact it’s not a belief, it’s a fact. I do believe trans people should be able to live their lives without discrimination.

Even though those people often say they are NOT women but transwomen ?

Are you forcing an identity onto them ?

How do you include transwomen in your definition of women, without excluding females who don't comply to gender stereotypes and still consider themselves women?

orwellwasright · 24/06/2022 18:25

I support trans rights.

Unlike you I'm not surprised at Mumsnet's stance. A local support group for families of trans children did a really good session on opposition to trans rights in the media. Mumsnet was listed as being particularly toxic. I should imagine this post will be removed.
