Debating between these two countries. Which is better to bring children up in?

England or America. I am from England, Husband is American. We are not rich, nor poor therefore we would be living a average lifestyle. My only concern is which country will be better for the children? If we didn't have children I wouldn't really care which country either way. I just want the best for the children. Children are not yet school age, if that makes a difference.

Thanks in advance.

The USA is not somewhere I would want to be, especially not to raise a family. Do you want your child doing active shooter drills?

Florida is not a good state to live. The only good things about FL are the parks like Disney and Universal, the Everglades and the weather.
The bad things are - the guns, racists, bigots, the gangs, drugs, murders, etc etc. The mindset is so different from most Brits.

Come home to the UK, NE coast has so many safe, beautiful and idyllic spots to raise a family. No contest.

Guns. Healthcare. Racial bias. Holiday. Women's rights.

Not for me.

Snap

Why is Scotland not on the cards... I vote there

If I could move back to the UK, I'd move to Scotland! It was love at first sight. I could see any family being very happy there.

hattie43 · 23/06/2022 20:46

Having just heard on the news it's now legal for Americans to carry handguns on them for self protection no way would I move there .
I'd even think twice about a holiday now , you only need an altercation in New York and some bozo could shoot you dead .

@Ponderingwindow

What an intriguing comment.

Why terrified?

This thread is very interesting!

I grew up in both America and England. I preferred the American school system significantly but I think it caters to high achieving children with its honors and AP classes. We moved back when I was at the start of year 11 and was easily able to complete year 10 and 11 in one year with high grades because I was much further ahead in the American system.

The quality of life was also much better and sense of community. We lived in the South so the summer was all about water sports, friends beach houses and big community events. Things that my whole family really miss in the UK to the point my parents bought a lake house there and spend the summer back in America. I will say we lived in a privileged area, my dad had a good job, healthcare and good holidays. That’s probably pretty key.

England - lots of wankers
US - even more wankers. Plus wankers with guns.

This.

Onlyrainbows · 23/06/2022 20:54

It really depends where in the US and where in England. Yes America has shootings but there's knife crime over here. If you have a decent job, you get decent insurance (not the joke that is the NHS). Both countries have racism Nicer weather in America ... I plan to move to the US and would choose either AZ or SouthCal.

Newpuppymummy · 23/06/2022 20:54

I lived in Texas and California in the past. I absolutely could not raise my children in a country where school shootings are so prevalent. England is not perfect at all. But we had one mass school shooting in the UK then put legislation in place so it didn’t happen again.

Léighméleabhair · 23/06/2022 20:54

Neither, Ireland is a much better option. 😁

ElephantsFart · 23/06/2022 20:56

I haven’t raised kids in both but have lived in both. You can carve out a nice life in both, especially if you have a good job with reasonable holiday entitlement. But that said, the north of England is vastly preferable to Florida.

AliceMcK · 23/06/2022 20:58

Another for the England.

I’ve lived in countries that don’t have the healthcare England has, it would be a big no for me with children, honestly some people really don’t understand how lucky they are in the UK with health & dental care.

As others have said gun control, school shootings, random shootings and healthcare would be enough for me. But plenty of other reasons, work hours, Womens rights, racism, lack of employment rights, backward laws, forced child marriages, crime, the opioid crisis at the moment, political games in congress that effect government workers regularly, so so many things would put me off raising children there, even though there are plenty of places I’d love to live in the US I wouldn’t do it now with kids.

Ponderingwindow · 23/06/2022 20:59

We have excellent schools, health care, housing, and food. Our neighborhood is idyllic. Those stereotypical American movies and tv shows with the perfect suburban lives, we are basically living that.

In a matter of days, my right to end a pregnancy that could kill me is going to be taken away. I still have enough money that as long as travel is possible, I or my DD should be able to get a safe abortion, but I don’t trust they won’t be closing the borders. The Supreme Court is showing that they won’t support gun control measures. The politicians who could be fighting for our basic rights have gone so far left that they are losing their base. A particular breed of extremism has taken hold in America and they aren’t happy with woman having choices in life, beyond just reproductive choice. The fact that we have economic power and high ranking jobs pisses them off. They want to make us dependent again and the democrats are off fighting about the words in policy documents.

BlackandBlueBird · 23/06/2022 20:59

I also grew up in both America and England. I way, way preferred living in America.

So, I always thought I’d want to bring my kids up in America. But no, because of the guns. I don’t want my kids to do gun drills at school. That’s really what it comes down to for
me.

CaptaNoctem · 23/06/2022 21:00

I would not want my children to attend schools where they have to have regular drills on what to do if someone comes in with a gun.

I would not want to send my children off to school every day wondering if that's the last time I would see them alive.

Until America sorts out the gun issue I would not want to have children there - and if I was planning to have more I wouldn't want to have them in a hospital that charges you to hold your own newborn.

UndertheCedartree · 23/06/2022 21:00

With that choice absolutely the UK. I would never live in the States just too many negatives.

tararabumdeay · 23/06/2022 21:00

Can I claim to be a refugee from the UK and get a plane to Rwanda? It sounds lovely there.

Summerwhereareyou · 23/06/2022 21:03

I know school children drill's are regularly but people are aware our DC also do lock down drills? Hide under tables?

Really we should be practising running away and proper barricading.

Also with all the drills they have so many still die.
What on earth goes wrong??

Summerwhereareyou · 23/06/2022 21:04

America is still a very backward country really in many many ways.

Wineaddict · 23/06/2022 21:06

England (or any part of the UK) 100%
I love the US for holidays but would never want to live there for many reasons, even without kids.
With kids, it’s even more of a definite no.

avm6 · 23/06/2022 21:07

Yikes I see some people saying move to Scotland. If Nicola Sturgeon gets the ok for an independence referendum and is successful, we have no choice but to up sticks and go to England. So don't move to Scotland. SNP are ruining this country slowly but surely.

Oceanus · 23/06/2022 21:08

I love Maine, wouldn't mind living there!

No. The Tories are ruining the UK. Sturgeon is offering an escape route. I don’t agree with independence and I’d hate for it to happen but it gets harder to argue against it with every passing year.

Oceanus · 23/06/2022 21:13

If Scotland becomes independent and joins the EU you can always get a beach house in Spain! 🙄😇
