I thought I would start a thread. It's muggy and I'm tired. I can't wait for the cool Autumn days and darker evenings 🤣

If you’re hot there’s hardly anything you can do, really only install air con and that’s not an option for the vast majority of us

Wet a sheet or towel or top in cold water, wring it out and sit with that round you; iced cold water bottle; sit with your feet in an ice tray or ice pack; bowl of iced water with a fan behind it to blow the cold air towards you; lots of iced cold drinks; clothes in the freezer in a plastic bag before you put them on; make sure you wear loose closing made from natural fibres; make sure you're not carrying excess weight; ice on your pulse points; curtains and blinds shut during the day, open windows at night; fan beside the windows pointing outwards and one in the middle of the room; wait a week or so until the weather cools down; etc.

And this translates to being out and about and using public transport...how?

Appreciate the list, thank you, I’ve definitely tried and still try all of these things and it helps a tiny bit, until you need to actually do something or go out anywhere. The weight is a hard one, especially when the weight is due to medication or a health condition that also impacts heat tolerance. It’s all just a huge horrible sweaty nightmare in hot weather!

Too cold? ‘Wear more layers!’

Too hot? ‘Don’t be fat!’ Lol, dumbest advice 😂

RampantIvy · 21/06/2022 15:07

Too cold? ‘Wear more layers!’

It doesn't really help. Us collies need a warmer ambient temperature. No amount of layers will do that.

mmmmmmghturep · 21/06/2022 17:28

@NippyWoowoo Ive poured a bottle of ice cold water down my back while sitting on a bus before. If Stephensons busses dont want wet seats i suggest they dont have the heaters on in JULY. Apparently they cant turn them off. So i shall continue to make their seats wet.

Omg 😂 I'd probably do the same!

Interesting, so it’s not just our bus companies here that choose to heat their buses in July….

Why do they do that, it’s just so weird?

Yes layers may not help some people to warm up, my dad is like this and absolutely adores boiling hot sunshine and lying out in it for hours. It’s never too hot for him. As you said it really has a lot to do with our ambient working thermometer - lol I’ve probably phrased that wrong!

nevergoesaway · 21/06/2022 17:59

@mmmmmmghturep just remembered you said they claim to not be able to turn them off, I guess thats probably the reason then, it’s a default setting to just have them on, because as we know, the UK is usually more in need of heating than cooling. Knowing this though doesn’t make the problems that come with heat go away, especially as it’s happening more frequently now with the climate the way it is.

mmmmmmghturep · 21/06/2022 18:14

Yep We have more heatwaves than we do Beast from the East type events.

Not daft advice at all - advice you might not like, but that doesn't make it daft. Read more here (and elsewhere, I cba to link - check out thermoregulation and obesity / overweight)

It’s hotting up again here, to unbearable temperatures 😩 Anyone else struggling?

SirChenjins · 22/06/2022 21:30

Oh no - so sorry to hear that Sad @nevergoesaway

I really wish we could swap weather, it’s cool again here - wore my jeans, boots and a heavy hoodie to take the dog for a walk tonight. I hope it cools down again v soon for you 🤞🤞🤞

It's wonderful. Truly wonderful.
There are so many cold wet and miserable days in the year. Please don't begrudge those of us who welcome the heat our few days of sunshine and warmth that seeps right through to the core. I can't express how much I love the heat.

oviraptor21 · 22/06/2022 21:35

For those of you that want a cool house can I recommend making sure the main rooms are on the north or east facing side. This usually means having a north or east facing back garden which some people refuse but honestly it makes such a difference to how cool the indoors is. And then make sure you keep all the curtains closed on the south side of the house.

SirChenjins · 22/06/2022 21:56

I’m with you @oviraptor21 the feeling of the sun on your face, warming through to your bones is just wonderful - I love it. Sadly it’s all too rare up here.

mmmmmmghturep · 22/06/2022 22:38

Cant breathe in this fucking shithole Feel like using our sleeping bag in the communal hallway

It won't make any difference of we begrudge hot days, we can't control the weather 😂

28 here today but bearable as there was a breeze, I had to go out this evening so had a shower and kept my hair wet which helped. Cooler downstairs but haven't ventured upstairs yet. Looking forward to cooler temps on Friday and a big storm forecast here tomorrow.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 22/06/2022 23:37

**I meant to add I have thermal blackout curtains and they really help keep the front room cooler if I keep them drawn.

nevergoesaway · 22/06/2022 23:51

You are so kind @SirChenjins I really appreciate that 💖 And I’m sorry it’s not nice for you at the moment, really do wish we could swap as I’d gladly take your weather! Hope you get some much needed sun and heat soon.

Don’t mean to begrudge you at all, I’m honestly glad you’re enjoying it, that’s brilliant. I don’t wish misery on anyone and hope that you enjoy any other hot days we have this year.

Us moaning about it won’t take the weather away, please don’t worry about that. And this is a thread specifically for complaints about the heat and how awful it is to cope in for some of us. If you make a thread in Winter about how badly it’s affecting you, I wouldn’t berate you for it, and if I somehow ended up on that thread I’d have empathy and compassion.
There’s a link to an article I posted a few days ago which explains why some properties can become like a sauna that there’s no escape from, just in case you want to see it from a different point of view and it explains more about why some people can’t cope.

Good thinking with the wet hair, it does help a bit. That’s good it’s cool downstairs for you as well, and yay to the storm!

Really feel for folks in hot flats, we used to be in one and it was hellish.
