I thought I would start a thread. It's muggy and I'm tired. I can't wait for the cool Autumn days and darker evenings 🤣

It’s 27 here and very pleasant. I don’t consider it hot though. Would have to be around 32 for me to find it hot.
In relation to people who have health conditions being affected by heat, I can certainly understand that.
On the other hand, there are plenty of conditions which are made worse or aggravated by the cold weather, but you don’t hear people affected like this whining and complaining as soon as the temperature starts to drop by a few degrees!

You do! There are always loads of threads about being cold/ the rain/ wanting the heating up.

No it’s been too hot to cope with every Summer for the past few years. And even if it’s not for long, which it isn’t some years, even a few days of hot temperatures can be unbearable for some of us.

However the very long stretch of hot weather was most definitely not 2006, I’m pretty sure it was 2018 as someone else said. I might be remembering wrong but I think that year the hot temps stayed for months, I actually remember an October afternoon and it being 25C.

Yes it was 2018 or 2019. That was when the grass died everywhere as it was so warm and dry for so long. Didn't rain at all for many weeks.

I actually have seen threads on here about people being miserable or fed up in colder weather, or experiencing SAD. And as a personal anecdote, pretty much everyone I know moans like crazy whenever it rains or the temperature gets below 10c, or even if it’s cloudy. People at bus stops make small talk about the “awful weather” except when it’s sunny and warm.

Not usually after a few days of cold weather though! If we all got hot temperatures for the same length of time as we get cold temperatures then fair enough, but UK average temps are firmly skewed towards the cooler end of the spectrum.

Laiste · 17/06/2022 15:53

Yes that 2018 one!

Wasn't that the summer where England was doing well in the football?

I remember looking at the thermometer indoors and it reading 32 Shock
We were all just sprawled about like starfish listening to the faint sound of occasional cheering from the mad folk people who had gone to the village pub to watch the football😂

Well, respectfully - that’s their choice. Anyone could make a thread on here having a moan about the cold weather after only 1-2 days of it and that’s totally their right. It doesn’t mean people who make one about the hot weather are “weaker” but I suspect that’s what some people do think about those of us who can’t tolerate it.

Friars23 · 17/06/2022 16:48

The summer of 2018 is when we had months of glorious sunshine, hot, yes, at times, but was so oooo nice to have a long stretch of zero greyness. Got to the stage when expected sunshine daily. I thought this must be what it’s like to live in climate where warm, sunny days are guaranteed. 2019 summer had a fair few sunny days but not as good as 2018. Until this week I thought summer so far had been poor, not enough sunshine.

Of course that's their right - that wasn't what I was saying. The fact is, we have far more cold or cooler days in the UK that we do hot or warm days (according to Wiki which pulls together the av temp for the 4 parts of the UK) so if anyone was to say (after a few very cold days) that they couldn't wait to the 6 months of very warm or hot weather most of us would be Confused and wonder what they were taking about! I don't think anyone thinks posters who can't tolerate the heat are weak, I think it's more a case of thinking that if they just wait a week or so we'll be back down to the usual cool/cold temperatures that we have for the vast majority of the year.

In some circumstances there are

JoanWilderbeast · 17/06/2022 18:50

I've just remembered, weren't the original 'I find hot weather difficult', threads a response to the 'it's hot, so everyone must love it' general media trope?

TBH I can't remember, but there do seem to be more "I hate hot weather" threads than " I hate winter" threads. Although this might change this year.

PumpkinSpicedLatte22 · 17/06/2022 19:30

@SirChenjins oh do shut up. Can't you just respect that other people have different opinions of ideal weather conditions and preferences and stop wishing those of us who don't like heat to melt. Do you question those who don't like the same music as you or same food in the way you've done here? I don't like mushrooms, but I don't ask "why not", "why not", "why not" like a 3 year old to people who do. I respect that people have different likes and dislikes to me.

Blossomtoes · 17/06/2022 19:42

Oh dear. I can see why some people don’t like the summer. 🥺

Merryclaire · 17/06/2022 19:52

I’ve noticed over the years that there are a lot of people that get really irritated when others complain about the heat - as if we’re miserable feckers that are trying to spoil it for them.

But if you don’t cope well in the heat, it can be really miserable. Unlike being cold (when you can put the heating in) it’s not easy to cool down in the heat.

I have a thyroid issue which makes me intolerant of temperature extremes so don’t find it pleasurable when it’s 30 degrees, but do think it’s nice in the low 20s.

Agree with this. But some people do love to moan don't they? 🙄 Just a couple of days of hot weather, and it's moan moan moan...' wish it was winter, dark nights, sub zero temperatures' blah blah blah. Bloody mood hoovers. Hmm It's bloody LOVELY to see a nice start to the summer, and have some heat.

Sitting outside in the beer garden today with some of my neighbours, supping cold beer, and listening to music coming from the pub, was bloody fantastic! Some people will just gripe about anything. They just don't want to even TRY to enjoy life. Imagine being like that. Confused

@Merryclaire, it’s probably because we get so little warm weather. We endure months on end of grey, damp, cold weather, it does seem churlish to complain about the small number of warm days we get. You get your preferred weather almost all the time!

Merryclaire · 17/06/2022 20:09

@Blossomtoes I don’t feel I do. My preferred weather is a beautiful sunny spring day with temperatures in the mid teens. Nice enough to get out and be active, and see nature come to life.

I never feel we get enough of those days.

NannyWeatherWitch · 17/06/2022 20:12

As much as I love winter, and I do love winter I don’t want to wish this lovely sunshine away.

This is the attitude that is absolutely bullshit. The idea that people who hate the heat are miserable and out to spoil everyone’s fun. I love life! I’m a happy positive person. I actually love winter and the cold but I also love a nice warm summers day.

However when the temperature is 32 degrees in the middle of London with no breeze, no air and with no garden to sit in, it’s horrible to me and makes me feel ill. That doesn’t mean I love to moan. It doesn’t make me a miserable fecker. It just means that this temperature is far more than my body can cope with and I personally don’t like it. You do. Good for you. Me not liking it is not going to suddenly make the temperature drop. So enjoy yourself in the sun and maybe have a bit of empathy for those whose bodies don’t react in the exact same way as yours.
