I thought I would start a thread. It's muggy and I'm tired. I can't wait for the cool Autumn days and darker evenings 🤣

No you can't store the heat but you'd have even less money to heat your house in December if you were having to pay to do so in June.

I've never heated my house in June though.

I have. I live on the edge of the Pennines Grin

I live in central Scotland.

In years gone past it went off 1st March at the latest due to not being able to afford it.

Windows upstairs are pretty much open all year round. And I know many would think our thermostat is set too low but it's what's comfortable to us.

We don't feel the cold easily in this house. But it's bugger all to do with privilege. It's just our own internal heating as individuals.

RampantIvy · 19/06/2022 14:47

My internal heating isn't very money saving unfortunately. I feel the cold too easily, and when I'm cold I am utterly miserable and can't think of anything else.

pinkhousesarebest · 19/06/2022 14:48

It’s 38 degrees where I am. With a blistering southerly wind that is really disconcerting. Currently sitting inside in the dark with my shutters closed waiting for dusk.
And no a/c in the classrooms, not even a fan. To say I am dreading tomorrow is an understatement.

I can appreciate that and can understand that it feels miserable. I feel miserable when I feel too hot. My eldest has fainted a couple of times as he overheats easily. Nothing encourages a barber more to hurry a haircut than to witness the colour literally drain from a customers face and turn green all because he has got too hot. He is also the kid (well teenager) who wears short sleeves and no jacket in the winter. You fully know it's cold when he wears anything resembling a jacket 😂.

It was the poster who was making out that it's privilege that got me.

Different people do feel temperature differently. You just need to go into a work environment and listen to the arguments about heating/ac/windows to see that.

It really is as simple as some people feel the cold and some people feel the heat. Neither is right or wrong

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 19/06/2022 15:54

LuckySantangelo35 · 19/06/2022 13:03

@MrsPelligrinoPetrichor

i will

people like you just confirm my post about privilege

Why are you taking such offence at me not liking the heat? Really quite odd.

liveforsummer · 19/06/2022 15:57

I've never heated my house in June though.

We had a couple of really cold days earlier this month where I've had to put the heating ion. It was a horrible feeling knowing it will bump my bill up so now I'm definitely grateful for feeling too hot

mmmmmmghturep · 19/06/2022 15:58

@LuckySantangelo35 Not if the HA has filled the walls with insulation unsuitable for the property. Its been unbearable for years. Did you not read the article? SH tenants are always being used to generate others income.

And its usually people who dont live in social housing who are very keen to blame the tenant. Might be cooler today but this shithole takes a couple of days to cool down.

mmmmmmghturep · 19/06/2022 16:08

Food like potatoes dont keep long either. You cant store everything in the fridge.

nevergoesaway · 19/06/2022 19:00

The arguments saying we should shut up and be grateful to not have the heating on are too simplified. It’s not as black and white as that. I always find it interesting when people have total “all or nothing” ways of thinking.

I’m worried sick about being able to afford the heating bills in Winter, why would anyone assumed that heat haters don’t have to worry about that? That’s so weird to me. The thing is though, if we need it and are feeling literally ill from being too cold we CAN get relief from it because we allow ourselves one hour of heating per day in Winter which is what we can afford - probably less now. This will hear the whole flat and due to insulation, retain that heat pretty effectively. But…we also have loads of jumpers, blankets, quilts and hot water bottles so we can do a lot to make ourselves warm.

In hot weather, in certain properties, there really is nothing you can do to feel colder. Windows open makes zero difference, can’t afford AC, and there’s not much you can do clothes wise beyond being totally naked. Not appropriate for a lot of families trying to get on with day to day life. There’s no relief, no escape, no garden for so many of us, no decent local parks, and even then, what can we do, just sit on a park bench? Lovely for a while when it’s cooled down slightly but all day and night?

Add in health conditions, some of which make it IMPOSSIBLE for the human body to regulate it’s temperature.

Add in commuting on public transport, where there’s no AC and buses and trains are packed full of other people and their collective heat. Again, even going to work doesn’t provide an escape from home.

Add in everything mentioned in that article, like the cold hard facts that people DIE every Summer due to the effects of excess heat in their homes, and the people who are most likely to die are ethnic minorities, poor people and disabled people.

After taking all this into consideration, do people really think we’re whining from a place of privilege? Or just being miserable for the sake of it and enjoying moaning? If so, I accept that’s your opinion and would love to hear why you think that, if you’re happy to share.

nevergoesaway · 19/06/2022 19:04

Reading that back, I realise an hour a day of heating is a huge privilege and as I said that’s only if we feel seriously cold. That was previous years though, with rising costs though we won’t be able to do this but we do have the other things as I said - jumpers, blankets, socks, hot water bottles.

cardibach · 19/06/2022 19:35

i am a bit confused by the number saying they are ‘pasty’ so not suited to heat. I get if you are pale sun can be an issue, but not heat, surely? Sit in the shade, use sunscreen.
The ‘I hate being hot but I live sitting by a roaring fire people’ are also confusing. You like thick clothes and hot fires so it’s obviously not being hot per se that you don’t like.

Sitting by an open fire and sitting in the sun are completely different. I can tolerate an open fire but hate central heating, it makes me feel ill and stuffy. I've loved all the covid/ventilation guidelines.

Yes totally agree, it is different. Same as how in autumn I love having a hot water bottle and being by an open window - love the fresh air blowing in and the comfort of some heat from the bottle. It’s different to being in what feels like an inescapable sauna.

Also it’s probably a control thing for lots of us, as I mentioned before, if you’re cold there’s a lot of things to try to be able to warm up, and you can also take them away. If you’re hot there’s hardly anything you can do, really only install air con and that’s not an option for the vast majority of us.

Zazdar · 20/06/2022 09:35

Or sit in the cellar, if you have one. Ours stays at 14 degrees. Luckily the house never gets really warm anyway.

Wet a sheet or towel or top in cold water, wring it out and sit with that round you; iced cold water bottle; sit with your feet in an ice tray or ice pack; bowl of iced water with a fan behind it to blow the cold air towards you; lots of iced cold drinks; clothes in the freezer in a plastic bag before you put them on; make sure you wear loose closing made from natural fibres; make sure you're not carrying excess weight; ice on your pulse points; curtains and blinds shut during the day, open windows at night; fan beside the windows pointing outwards and one in the middle of the room; wait a week or so until the weather cools down; etc.

Thanks for that, never would've thought of any of those things 🙄😂

SirChenjins · 20/06/2022 12:10

@MrsPelligrinoPetrichor that list wasn't in response to any of your posts.

SirChenjins · 20/06/2022 12:10

Oops - almost forgot the little 🙄😂

Oh wow your house sounds like it would be bliss in the very hot weather! A cellar would be amazing, it’s sadly just not there for so many in the UK.

Appreciate the list, thank you, I’ve definitely tried and still try all of these things and it helps a tiny bit, until you need to actually do something or go out anywhere. The weight is a hard one, especially when the weight is due to medication or a health condition that also impacts heat tolerance. It’s all just a huge horrible sweaty nightmare in hot weather!

SirChenjins · 20/06/2022 12:47

I do understand...I feel exactly the same in the cold weather. Fine if I'm working from home and can adjust my temperature, but a nightmare if I'm going between multiple sites so can't carry hot water bottles, lots of clothes and heated throws, trying to commute anywhere in the dark cold, icey weather, taking the dog out and so on. Endless months of it...

I hope it's cooler where you are - we've got 20 degrees today, woohoo!! Still with a breeze so it's not actually 20, but I've got bare feet today for the first time this year!

SirChenjins · 20/06/2022 12:47

icy

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 20/06/2022 12:51

21here with a breeze and it's gorgeous. Ramping up Tues-thurs though 😭
