I thought I would start a thread. It's muggy and I'm tired. I can't wait for the cool Autumn days and darker evenings 🤣

@ilovesooty Not you, nothing to do with you.

AllHailKingLouis · 17/06/2022 21:23

How the hell has this thread turned into an argument?? 😂😂

Dare I say the heat is clearly getting to some folk 😉

PumpkinSpicedLatte22 · 17/06/2022 21:27

It's getting hot in here, so take off all your clothes.

AnnieSnap · 17/06/2022 21:27

It’s been perfect in the North East. Sunny and 23/24c. Loving it. I would find the 33c in the South very uncomfortable.

U2HasTheEdge · 17/06/2022 22:01

I love summer. I hate winter with a passion. It has been 33 here today and that is a little bit hotter than I would like it ideally, but then I have been stuck at home working in a small room with a small attic window.

I am on leave now and I am gutted it is going to go back to being cloudy and cool from tomorrow. I have felt quite resentful that I didn't get to make the most of it today.

I am at my happiest sitting in the sun with a drink in one hand and a book in the other.

I get that other people don't like being hot, but it does make me roll my eyes when people start moaning after a day of hot weather. I think you are 'lucky' that you get your preferred weather for the majority of the year.

SirChenjins · 17/06/2022 22:30

PumpkinSpicedLatte22 · 17/06/2022 19:30

@SirChenjins oh do shut up. Can't you just respect that other people have different opinions of ideal weather conditions and preferences and stop wishing those of us who don't like heat to melt. Do you question those who don't like the same music as you or same food in the way you've done here? I don't like mushrooms, but I don't ask "why not", "why not", "why not" like a 3 year old to people who do. I respect that people have different likes and dislikes to me.

Oh do shut up yourself.

No, you shut up

No, you shut up

Etc.

SirChenjins · 17/06/2022 22:32

Exactly this. The cool weather will be soon enough, don’t worry.

nevergoesaway · 17/06/2022 22:53

Of* *course that's their right - that wasn't what I was saying. The fact is, we have far more cold or cooler days in the UK that we do hot or warm days (according to Wiki which pulls together the av temp for the 4 parts of the UK) so if anyone was to say (after a few very cold days) that they couldn't wait to the 6 months of very warm or hot weather most of us would be Confused and wonder what they were taking about! I don't think anyone thinks posters who can't tolerate the heat are weak, I think it's more a case of thinking that if they just wait a week or so we'll be back down to the usual cool/cold temperatures that we have for the vast majority of the year.

@SirChenjins Maybe I overreacted with the “weak” comment then, it’s just a slight impression I’ve got from SOME posters, and that they also think of us heat-haters as miserable people with no joy in life and are pathetic etc.

Believe me, in my day to day life I encounter far more people who moan about the cold than the heat! In fact, as you say, there’s more cold/rainy days than hot ones so plenty more opportunities for cold haters to complain! And it’s more socially acceptable too. I have one particular family member who calls me over sensitive and weird for hating the heat, and says I’ve got serious issues. I’m never ever like that towards him when he’s complaining about 15 degree weather and saying he can’t cope in the freezing cold.

Regarding your last sentence - we shall see I guess!! I’m interested to see how this Summer plays out and whether we really will be back to cool/cold temperatures for the rest of the year. It’s only mid-June so I reckon there’s plenty more days like today for you to enjoy and some of us to get wound up about! 🤣

nevergoesaway · 17/06/2022 22:54

ugh I tried to bold your comment @SirChenjins as I hate those nested quote things but it hasn’t worked!

Agree with this. But some people do love to moan don't they? 🙄 Just a couple of days of hot weather, and it's moan moan moan...' wish it was winter, dark nights, sub zero temperatures' blah blah blah. Bloody mood hoovers. Hmm It's bloody LOVELY to see a nice start to the summer, and have some heat.

Sitting outside in the beer garden today with some of my neighbours, supping cold beer, and listening to music coming from the pub, was bloody fantastic! Some people will just gripe about anything. They just don't want to even TRY to enjoy life. Imagine being like that. Confused

Ok @PurpleButterflyWings this comment is just obnoxious. Have you read any of the comments explaining in detail exactly why some of us struggle in the heat? There are legitimate, medical reasons for it, not because we enjoy moaning about anything. I rarely moan tbh and am also very “live and let live” about other peoples preferences and choices in life.

I’m so glad, genuinely, that you enjoyed the weather today. What you described, sitting in a beer garden with neighbours and drinking beer is not my idea of fun and I’m quite socially anxious and can’t drink alcohol so the thought of this fills me with dread BUT I’m happy that you had a good day and others have too, including my own family who have done various things and loved every minute of the sun. Your day today would make me ill and drain me, it’s done the opposite for you. This doesn’t mean I and others like me don’t want to enjoy life, just that we have a different way than others and different things affect us badly. Hope I’m making sense.

SirChenjins · 17/06/2022 23:00

Oh these nested quotes are the worst, aren’t they!

Unfortunately the weather forecast for here for the next fortnight up here is pretty rubbish - a bit more heat would be lovely! I’ll live vicariously through you all complaining about the heat instead and plan for my retirement back south Grin

They’re terrible! We may argue about the heat but I think the one thing we can all agree on is that whoever approved the MN ‘upgrade’ was on another planet 😉

Oh no I’m genuinely sorry that it’s not a good forecast for you for where you are, did you say you’re up in Scotland, I can’t remember now? The heat has got to my brain haha! Maybe we could do a house swap?! That would be great if they could be done based on weather preferences!!

SirChenjins · 17/06/2022 23:07

Sorry, that to @nevergoesaway

SirChenjins · 17/06/2022 23:13

Oh YY to the ‘upgrade’ - it’s awful!

Edinburgh here, it’s a beautiful city - according to the weather forecast there’s to be 2 days over the next fortnight when it’s getting up to the dizzy heights of 19 (although it’ll be cooler as there’s a moderate breeze) and the rest are between 16-18, again with a breeze. I’ll swap you my cool house for your warm one any day!

nevergoesaway · 17/06/2022 23:21

Oh Edinburgh, gorgeous. Never been but never heard anything except beautiful things about it, and it looks like a dream. I love photos of Old Town and how picturesque it is. So much fascinating history too.

Funnily enough me and DP have talked a few times about moving up to Scotland due to the weather, and the scenery. It’s just hard leaving family etc.

19 with a breeze sounds amazing, I genuinely wish for you though that it was warmer than that. It’s the same as how me and other heat haters feel having the hot days, so I totally get it.

SirChenjins · 17/06/2022 23:36

Oh it really is lovely, you must pay it a visit sometime Smile Have a look at Dean Village, it’s gorgeous, but all of it is pretty awesome. That being said, we are finding the long winters really tough as we’re getting older so do want to move to a warmer climate.

I do get everyone has different preferences - and I suppose it’s a bit of the old ‘grass is always greener’ thing! Hope it’s a bit cooler for you soon.

nevergoesaway · 18/06/2022 00:32

That sounds beautiful, will have a look at it. We’ll hopefully get to visit there one day.

Aw thank you, yes I think it’s definitely a “grass is greener” kind of thing sometimes. Really do hope it’s warmer for you soon too 💕

RampantIvy · 18/06/2022 08:41

Edinburgh is indeed lovely. I went when I was a student, and again 5 years ago. One thing that disappointed me was just how touristy and tacky the Royal Mile has become. Every shop seems to sell tartan, shortbread, whiskey and loads of tourist tat, and every few yards there was a man in a kilt playing the bagpipes.

It is still a lovely place once you see past all of this. It was 16 degrees in June when we visited with a cold wind.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 18/06/2022 09:43

Over cast here and raining, 24 in my hallway but feels much cooler, bliss!!

liveforsummer · 18/06/2022 09:46

Also in Edinburgh, it's not just a breeze. It's been consistently windy for what feels like weeks, even months. We get one nice day or even afternoon then wake up to freezing drizzle as high winds again. Wind is so bloody inconvenient and makes my ears hurt. Shouldn't have to be wearing hats in June ffs. I'll definitely swap 😆

Interesting article today that got suggested to me:
Heat in the UK

Some parts of the article:

“Already, around 20 per cent of homes in England alone overheat in the summer and a drive to insulate homes against cold could make overheating even worse.

Millions of people now live in homes unfit for the warmer climate we’re hurtling towards.

Without fast adaptation, it’s vulnerable people — from the elderly to the low-income and disabled — who’ll be left most exposed.”

“It’s a threat few, including policymakers, have paid attention to, says Bob Ward, policy and communications director at the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change.

“The effects of heat are underestimated in the UK, but we have literally hundreds of people in this country who die every summer because of overheating,” he says.

“Mainly this is people who already have underlying health conditions, and often they’ll die alone – heat kills you much more quickly than cold.”

“Low-income households, ethnic minorities and people with disabilities are, for instance, more likely than the general population to be renting homes, and it’s rented and social housing — often flats — which are more prone to overheating.

“Unlike a free-standing house, flats are surrounded by other homes, making it harder for heat to escape,” says Professor Kevin Lomas at the University of Loughborough, who conducted research into overheating in homes in 2018.

He added that top floor flats, where heat rises to, are worst affected. “Plus, there are fewer outside walls, making ventilation difficult,”

Reduced space in flats, meanwhile, makes escaping heat difficult or even impossible, and there are
few safe havens from high temperatures if there are no trees nearby to shelter from the sun.”

“Those on lower incomes are less able to afford cooling devices like fans, while also being more likely to do shift work, sleeping during the day when the sun is at its hottest.

Advice issued by the NHS on coping in heatwaves suggests “mov[ing] into a cooler room for sleeping” but, for millions, this cool room simply doesn’t exist.”

I hope it’s ok that I’ve posted this, I found it a really good article, lots more in there about how people suffer in the heat. I posted it to perhaps offer some different perspectives for those who say we’re just enjoying moaning at anything and ruining it for others. It’s definitely a real issue.

Oh no!! I think unfortunately lots of popular cities/towns end up like this which can be a shame as it loses the natural charm.

Yes a better day! Same here my flat is mid-20s still but it feels “breathable”! Hope you have a good day 🥰

I do think it's a real issue. Houses, and work places here are far more geared up to keeping warm and retaining heat.

And many people don't have gardens where they can go and sit out.

TheLostNights · 18/06/2022 13:15

22C here but humid as anything 😫
