I thought I would start a thread. It's muggy and I'm tired. I can't wait for the cool Autumn days and darker evenings 🤣

Hating this heat. Curtains closed, windows sealed shut. Eyes still effing itchy!

It's around 20c. Can't stand it.

Zazdar · 20/06/2022 12:58

Oh wow your house sounds like it would be bliss in the very hot weather!

It is. We are still sleeping under winter duvets.

nevergoesaway · 20/06/2022 13:13

@SirChenjins Ah we are different sides of the same coin! Yes I get you totally, it’s just hard doing day to day life in a temperature you’re not a fan of.

I’m so pleased for you that you’ve got 20c today, that is actually lovely! 🥳 Enjoy every minute!!

SirChenjins · 20/06/2022 13:16

It really is! I'm in the office, the window is open and it's lovely and warm. DH is wfh and is under strict instruction to hang out the washing so it will be dry and able to be folded and put away tonight. Hours of sunshine and light so the dog will get a lovely long walk tonight in the woods and I won't have to deal with mud when we get home - today is a good day! Smile

mmmmmmghturep · 20/06/2022 15:24

@nevergoesaway Fourteen years ago when the contractors were replacing the kitchens i overheard them talking in the car park threatening to down tools because they were sick of working in such hot properties. I immediately reminded them that they could walk away at the end of the day but we have to fucking live in it.

Nice! Good day for washing too so that’ll be lovely. Have a fab day ☀️

Oh no that’s so grim. I think it is awful though that they’re made to work in it, it’s bad all round for anyone who has to spend time in a home-sauna. It would be good if they refused to work in hot homes tbh to try to make an impact.

I really do think there’s very little awareness in general of what it’s like in some houses and flats, people who say we’re overreacting would probably have a shock if they had to spend even an hour in one.

The first Summer in our old flat, where it went to hellish temperatures my father in law came over and found it hard to catch his breath after 10 minutes, he seemed really overwhelmed by it and asked how we’re going to cope each year. I think it was around 27/28 outside. Those were some difficult days lol, this new place is hot too but that was something else.

U bearable at 20? That’s odd, because that’s below the recommended temperature for heating in the winter.

"U bearable at 20? That’s odd, because that’s below the recommended temperature for heating in the winter."

But that's an individual preference surely (taking fuel poverty out of the equation). 20 degrees in my home feels too warm for us- we have thermostat set for 18 which feels comfortable to us. But we don't feel cold easily. Others will want their house warmer as they feel cold easily.

skybluee · 20/06/2022 21:19

All of this can be summed up by saying everyone's different. People feel different and do not experience temperatures the same. There's no need for us to criticise each other. Tips that have helped me when I've been too warm:

  • don't cook, eat salads or meals that you piece together (e.g. mackerel in tomato sauce with bread and salad). Using the oven dramatically warms my flat and standing around doing stuff with cooking utensils makes it worse too
  • look on the BBC website at the hourly figures for your location. When it's cooler outside than your thermostat (or thermometer - you can get cheap digital display ones now) open the windows. When it's cooler inside keep them shut. Typically this means opening them in the early morning to let cool air in, then shutting them at some point during mid-morning, then opening them in the evening. It really makes a difference. I find it nuts seeing windows open when it's 30C outside.
  • Make ice lollies. You can get really cheap ice lolly makers. Then you freeze water with your choice of fruit or fruit juice/essence in it. Or you can make them with milk and nesquik. They cost fractions of the ones in shops.
  • If you have a shower keep it luke warm and to a few minutes. I find showers massively increase circulation which then makes you a lot hotter.
  • Keep your feet bare or in flip flops if you can.
  • Sounds random but make sure you exfoliate a lot and look after your skin. It seems to regulate temperature better when I've done this!
  • The best material for regulating temperature seems to be cotton or thin wool. I once got a merino wool silver anti-bacterial T shirt for £10 in a sale. Polyester is not so good.
  • Make sure you stay hydrated and not just with plain water, you need electrolytes too.
  • Tie your hair up and lift it up off your neck.
  • Buy magicool.
  • Wash your hair with cool water and leave it to dry naturally. As it dries it cools you.
  • Make your movements deliberate, calm and slow. Try not to rush or do things quickly.
  • Avoid alcohol - it seems to massively increase circulation and make you feel very hot.
  • The sheets that cover your duvet (quilt cover), if this is made of cotton it might help rather than polyester. There are some cheap (plain) ones about.
  • Don't have a hot breakfast or hot drinks. I don't buy that about hot drinks cooling you down else why would people have them in winter?
  • Get a cooling gel vest if you're really struggling.
  • I think sun cream might interfere with regulating your temp so make sure you wash it all off before you go to bed!
I know some of these are really obvious but I hope at least one of them might help someone. I do not suffer in the heat but I struggle in the cold and know what it's like to be so uncomfortable you can't think of much else. These tips are from when I have been in hotter climates.
RampantIvy · 20/06/2022 22:04

Excellent poat @skybluee.

All common sense, but I still see and hear people complaining about the heat (or cold) and just not dressing appropriately for the weather or doing anything else to mitigate their problems.

The "it's not rocket science" one that gets trotted out regularly on mumsnet is "I hate summer clothes" by people wearing skinny jeans and jumpers and complaining about the heat. There are summer clothes to suit every shape and size, and summer cothes simply means light weight clothes not skimpy clothes.

EmmaH2022 · 20/06/2022 22:14

Agree with pp who said some folk don't realise what these flats are like. I had a tradesman in for a small, light job a couple of weeks ago when it was about 22c outside.

Within 10 mins he asked if the heating was on! Some days I want to take a sledgehammer to the the outside walls to physically rip out the insulation.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 20/06/2022 23:02

I always wear cotton, I can't tolerate polyester these days and just the thought of anything but really good cotton sheets brings me out in a hot flush!!

nevergoesaway · 20/06/2022 23:08

@skybluee Thanks for these tips, definitely haven’t heard all of them and will exfoliate more as that one’s really interesting. So true about the electrolytes, I meant to write that in a previous post, get some of the supermarket rehydration sachets and they actually really help you to feel cooler from the inside.

Totally agree that we’re all different and being nasty to someone who feels temperatures differently to you is pretty awful.

@EmmaH2022 yep that’s exactly it, I think you’d have to be in one of these buildings to really understand just how hot they can get. And they don’t just go back to matching the outside temp instantly either, they can take days to stop feeling like a furnace because the heat is trapped inside.

EmmaH2022 · 20/06/2022 23:24

nevergoesaway mine never matches the outside temp. If it's hot, it's about 10 degrees higher and I think it takes several days of colder weather to reduce down to about 22.

I gather newer flats are even worse.

SirChenjins · 21/06/2022 09:03

And on the flip side of that, buildings with A/C blasting away to create indoor temperatures far colder than that outside (even when the temps are only in the mid teens), to the extent you have to put fleeces or coats on. I used to work in a large, open plan office with A/C and it was absolutely miserable - I used to have to carry warm clothes for my mile walk each way and wear shoes and socks or tights on hot/warm days just so I could keep warm for 8 hours in the office, 5 days a week. It was absolutely ridiculous. Unless you've spent 40 hours a week sitting under an A/C vent you'll never know how bad it is.

Well yes absolutely if someone really hates being cold then that would be an actual nightmare for them, I’m guessing that the powers that be weren’t interested in the complaints from those that struggled? Or I guess maybe they had to go with what the majority wanted or something. It’s very difficult when you’re forced to be in an environment that makes you feel too hot or too cold.

Open plan offices are just a nightmare when it comes to temperature I think. People are either too hot or too cold. And it can case real resentment on either side as neither side is comfortable to these who feel cold or hot.

And with a/c I think sometimes it's a draft from the vents that cause issues too.

It's not nice for anyone in that environment. I feel for anyone who works in a temperature that's not comfortable to them.

We don't have a/c in my office but that doesn't stop the arguments about temperature as some want it mid 20's and some find that far too hot. Some want a window open and some don't. Our saving grace is that it's not open plan so less people to try and please at once.

But temperature has been the source of most of the friction in the workplace and our bosses have tried really hard to keep people together that like a similar working environment. Not always possible but at least they recognise the issue.

SirChenjins · 21/06/2022 12:10

It wasn’t down to one individual hating the cold, it was actually cold. There’s no need for year round A/C in Scotland in buildings with windows that open, esp large, open plan offices - unless it’s genuinely baking outside, and that’s v rare - and people shouldn’t have to wear fleece and warm tights in July just to go to work. A/C is one of the scourges of modern day living.

skybluee · 21/06/2022 13:34

I'm really glad you liked the tips. I was a bit hesitant about writing them out, but glad I did now :). Here (midlands) it's 24C today.

The sun always seems stronger now than years ago, like the rays are stronger - which I wonder sometimes if it makes lower temperatures feel warmer.

nevergoesaway · 21/06/2022 13:55

@SirChenjins yes true, doesn’t need to be constant AC in all weather, I don’t understand that. Didn’t they ever have heating on in Winter?

@skybluee I’m really glad you shared them, they honestly are helpful 😊 Ah yes midlands too here, and it’s so weird but I’ve been feeling like this for a few years, it’s like what I remember 20c felt like feels different now somehow, like it feels so much hotter. Not sure if humidity levels have gone up or it’s just because of my intolerance for heat has gone up but yes, it does seem stronger.
