To not understand why the Duke and Duchess of Suffolk only came over for 4 days?

I just find this really odd. To fly all that way then only stay 4 days? Surely they had other family to visit, could have made a bit of a holiday of it. I can&t imagine 2 long flights with toddlers that close together - it would be exhausting!

The Queen was brought up with the principle of Noblesse Oblige, hence she has demonstrated her sense of duty and obligation for all her adult life. The Sussexes opted out of the duties so they don't get the Royal treatment. Megan seems to have expected becoming Royal to be the same as being a celebrity and couldn't cope with the burden of duty placed on her. Maybe the failure to attend the lunch after the service was a result of realisation dawning

Bit harsh but I will take it maybe my imagine just ran away with me for a second

sunglassesonthetable · 10/06/2022 15:11

maybe 2 jet lagged toddlers at home did it
@tkwal

Fairislefandango · 10/06/2022 15:14

Who cares? I seriously doubt 'half the country' hate them. Most of us probably give them little thought. If I were going to devote any thought to the royal family (unlikely), it certainly wouldn't be to ponder the duration of one of their many trips. I don't hate them - they are just an anachronistic irrelevance.

Just to pre-empt the 'Well why bother commenting on the thread?' comments- I have no interest in the RF, but I am kind of fascinated by the public's weird, obsessive interest in them.

antelopevalley · 10/06/2022 15:15

@tkwal neither Meghan or Harry are working Royals. They are now private citizens. So what are you talking about??

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 10/06/2022 15:16

It's pick, pick, pick at these two all the time.

People complained when they left. They criticized them when they got into bed with the media - as if the remainder of that family hasn't; the mistake they made was to do so openly rather than a manipulative campaign behind the scenes. They're lambasted for keeping their kids hidden from view, no doubt because they don't want them to face the same level of public scorn as they do themselves. Now there are questions as to why they've flown fly over here - presumably at his Granny's behest, only to be publicly shunned by his petulant brother (they're both as bad as each other) and walked out of a church service to a chorus of boos and jeers. And people express even the slightest surprise that they've flown home early?

In the face of palpable hostility like that I suspect most people would want to place themselves at one remove. Just what have they done that is so unforgivably awful? More than one of them has given ill-advised interviews to the media. Nor is it an absolute that 100% of what they said was lies. The notion of the Windsors as racist isn't exactly a stretch, they have documented form for it.

I'm not a supporter of royalty or the hereditary system. I'd vote against the lot of them tomorrow if I could. I'm not a supporter of one Windsor personality against another personality - I couldn't give a fig about any of them - but these two have been treated poorly for behaviour in which one or another of them has indulged over the years and never experienced similar censure. Yes, that includes the repulsive second son of the current incumbent.

I don't blame this couple for G'ingTFO. I would have, too. My only surprise was that Meghan was ever seen again on UK soil after that, nor would I be expect ever to see her here again in the future. And I wouldn't blame her in the slightest.

antelopevalley · 10/06/2022 15:17

If they had not come they would have been criticised. They would have been criticised if they had gone to many royal events.
So they probably decided to do what they wanted to and to ignore the media and rather obsessed minority of the public.

Pieceofpurplesky · 10/06/2022 15:18

I know two people (separately) in the crowd and both said they heard no boos. Makes you wonder how far the media would go as on first hearing I didn't hear anything

sunglassesonthetable · 10/06/2022 15:20

None of it happens by chance. The Queen wanted them there and it would have all been agreed beforehand. I bet they all wanted to dib out of the Guildhall Lunch.

antelopevalley · 10/06/2022 15:20

I also hate that people can post really obvious made-up horrible stuff about Harry and Meghan and it stays. But if anyone posts something g mildly critical of Kate it is deleted.

Cuck00soup · 10/06/2022 15:24

thebellagio · 10/06/2022 13:37

I should imagine it's also due to their court case against the home office. If they are saying they don't feel safe over here, then they can hardly hang around can they? That's why they could only be at places where the senior royals were, to get the private protection that they think they need.

I would say exactly this.

If someone is suing a newspaper for reporting that that someone's publicity machine complained about their security not suitable, they can hardly wander around on their holidays with no security.

itsgettingweird · 10/06/2022 15:29

EmeraldShamrock1 · 10/06/2022 13:09

how ironic when they literally sell their soul to the media, selling secrets about the royal family and shit talking for money.

That's your perception.

I've no skin in this game IMO they were defending themselves against the leaked stories and gossip stirring from the media.

I've little doubt the comments on skin colour are untrue, the first mixed race DC born into the Royal family of course they discussed it at some point.

Like Meghan said in the interview "I was no-where but everywhere in the media".

Someone was telling the media tales otherwise how did they know about the crying incident? When Meghan was accused in the wrong.

Agree with this.

They are having much more privacy currently.

Ok, they are doing their Netflix series/ documentary.

But they are in control and they are choosing what's seen rather than waking up to stories about them that they can't control - and probably aren't always accurate as every story has 3 sides.

NewNamePrivacyneeded · 10/06/2022 15:31

I guess it's best if they return to their home before they gather more material/moaning sessions for their next paid for interview. The luxury private jet is a bit opposite to their statement about children growing up in an equal world .... say it but they never do it, why pretend in the first place.

Rreaq · 10/06/2022 15:34

They're rich enough that they can fly whenever they want this is not going to be a once in however many years visit it would be for normal people. Also with nannies, staff and a private plane, its not the huge exhausting trip it would be for normal people

SueSaid · 10/06/2022 15:36

'They are having much more privacy currently.'

'Ok, they are doing their Netflix series/ documentary.'

'But they are in control and they are choosing what's seen'

Yep, they are choosing what is seen! Sadly the same can't be said for the people they discuss as we've seen in their chat show appearance. They want their privacy and control but don't seem to care less about anyone else's. That is why they are hypocrites and most in the UK saw straight through them, hence the flounce.

sunglassesonthetable · 10/06/2022 15:38

hence the flounce.

then they left.

😴

Nanalisa60 · 10/06/2022 15:39

They weren’t what you would call slumping it in there private jet!! They came for one reason and one reason only to get pictures for there Netflix program with members of the firms A team. Well when they released that was not happening they bugged off home. Don’t think we will see them in Blighty for quite a long time.

sunglassesonthetable · 10/06/2022 15:39

most in the UK saw straight through them,

most in the UK don't care tbh

stripesorspotsorwhat · 10/06/2022 15:41

Because everyone made mincemeat of them enough already and they couldn't stand any more of it?

Comefromaway · 10/06/2022 15:42

They do thing with their children out of the public eye and visit places with no fuss. Members of the public would not even be aware they are there.

Luredbyapomegranate · 10/06/2022 15:44

They flew private probably both ways. They’ll have had a nanny, probably 2, and a PA. So tiring but not exhausting.

I don’t think either of them want to hang out in the UK right now.

Also suspect a quick in and out might have been the palace’s preference, and they might want to build up some brownie points before Harry’s book comes out and they are not speaking again.

ItDoesMyHeadIn · 10/06/2022 15:44

They only flew over to get a picture of Lillibet with QE. It didn't work, they got told no, so off they fucked back to La La Land.

TheKeatingFive · 10/06/2022 15:45

Because people's obsession with picking on every single thing they do is more than a bit weird and they're absolutely right to get the fuck away from it.

antelopevalley · 10/06/2022 15:48

@ItDoesMyHeadIn and you know that how?

PeekAtYou · 10/06/2022 15:51

I would have thought that the type of security that they wanted was for the 4 days of Jubilee and required them to stay on royal properties like Frogmore. If they wanted to go out to a restaurant to socialise then that wouldn't be "work" so they'd have to organise private security and they believe that it's inadequate while in the UK.

I see lots of posts on Relationships which can be summarised as "my mum is toxic and pisses me off but I am able to cope for a weekend once a year " and 4 days is probably as long as they could stand it.
