Ukraine is something Johnson can legitimately brag about... unfortunately voters don't care about foreign policy and it's done fuck all to help his personal ratings.

No, he can't. The reality is that he's done the minimum he can get away with, whilst still refusing to come clean about Russian funding for the Conservative party and his Brexit and election campaigns.

newnamethanks · 07/06/2022 17:36

Quite right too Arse, similar vintage, don't know anyone who thinks BJ is worth a 2nd thought. Someone on radio this morning was reminiscing about the EU Single Market being enthusiastically suggested and pursued by Thatcher. Oh, the irony. I'm going to refer to it from now on as Thatcher's single market every time someone mentions EU or Brexit. In pursuit of deserved confusion.

And he was right, as the current war shows us.

valerianaofficiana · 07/06/2022 17:39

@Amaryllis, you are wrong. Can't be arsed to give you the details/ qtys/ etc. because you'd just ride over the facts to cling to your POW.

"Can't be arsed to give you the details".

Oh, what a surprise.

AmaryIlis · 07/06/2022 17:44

@MeanderingGently, do you think it is OK that Johnson has repeatedly been caught out for lying to Parliament?

MangyInseam · 07/06/2022 17:44

I'm not really pleased or unpleased, but I don't think he will stay much longer. He's going to be a liability in an election so they will need to get rid of him before that.

balalake · 07/06/2022 17:45

Every day more is one too many. The day Mr Johnson leaves will be a very happy day, better still if it were to a prison cell.

LivingOnAnIsland · 07/06/2022 17:51

On Mumsnet, there is nobody that supports the Tories and everybody loathes Boris. Also on Mumsnet, nobody voted for Brexit and everyone would happily oust the Queen and live in a republic. There is however a silent majority that do support the Tories, have no issue with Boris or see him as the best of several pretty awful alternatives, did vote for Brexit and are delighted to have the Queen as Head of State. As long as everyone on Mumsnet realises that they are not representative of the British population, there isn't a problem.

RufustheFloralmissingreindeer · 07/06/2022 17:57

i really don’t think its the majority of posters

HydraWater · 07/06/2022 17:58

The longer he stays, the better chance of a Tory defeat in the next election. If he goes, and the next PM (unlikely, but still...) turns out to be a charistmatic, pragmatic, honest and GOOD leader of the country, the Tories will fly it.

It's up to the Tory Party to decide what to do now.

No, polling shows that Johnson is massively unpopular with 59% of the whole electorate thinking he should resign.

You can have your own opinion but you can’t have your own facts. It’s neither a majority nor is it silent.

Not quite. My son says I’m a total anomaly - socialist, feminist, monarchist, moved to tears by the Queen on Sunday.

Let's use logic. If having support of 41% of the general electorate is massively unpopular, who would you say could score higher? Genuine question. Sunak? Hunt? Starmer? Rayner?

Whitehorsegirl · 07/06/2022 18:09

The man is a disgrace and will eventually fall on his sword. If the Tories lose the two coming by-elections the plotting from Tory Ops will start again. He is finished anyway in the sense that he will never win an election again and he is destroying his party. The problem is that he is still allowed to continue to damage the country and our lives In the meantime...

I have no idea, I’m not a clairvoyant. It’s a different debate. I was merely responding to incorrect assertion that Johnson has the support of the ‘silent majority’. This is demonstrably untrue and just a projection.

YouGov Poll from 24-25 May

Which of the following do you think would make the best Prime Minister? (24-25 May)

Keir Starmer: 33% (+1)

What @SleeplessInEngland said. Isn't the silent majority argument always used when the silence is due to lack of support? We're usually better off under the Tories, would never vote for them regardless.

SleeplessInEngland · 07/06/2022 18:17

The silent majority is great because it always conveniently agrees with the person who invokes it. Even though, by definition, they should have no idea what a ‘silent’ majority thinks.

I read "majority" in this case as "more than anyone else", rather than "in excess of 50%". I.e. in the usual British electoral sense. Otherwise, by that definition not all MPs are enjoying the majority support in their own constituencies.

Blossomtoes · 07/06/2022 18:20

They haven’t even got that going for them any more.

True, people always seem to have a good idea of what the silent majority think, but if they're not being vocal about their views... How do they know? 🤔
Our traditionally Conservative area has become very vocal in their wishes to get rid of our current MP, I've never backed him but I'm hoping we can get rid of him for a change at the next election!

Fair enough. It is far from a massive gap though, and if you look at the history of the poll, they are regularly overtaking each other by a similar margin.
I can't see how this demonstrates that BJ is "massively unpopular".

Sorry I've worded it wrong, not everyone in general, but us as a family, in a financial sense. We've both been brought up to vote for whoever will best benefit the country as a whole though, hence we've never voted Tory!
It's true though, they're making grand gestures of grants towards energy bills and extra UC payments, but really it won't do much, if anything, to help people in the long term.
