LOL at anyone who expects logic from the left.
starmer told us, with a straight face, that corbyn was the right choice for PM. Either he didn’t mean that, and he was dishonest. Or he did, which is worse.

And Johnson once said the EU was great and leaving would be a terrible idea. Yeah, politicians say what's expedient at the time. Judge them by their actions - for better or worse Starmer has turned Labour into a place the Owen Jones' of the world don't feel welcome at anymore.

orwellwasright · 07/06/2022 15:30

Can people who support Johnson actually give a reason why? Not a 'but Labour this' and 'Corbyn/Starmer that'.

An actual positive thing about Johnson, please. I want to know why people like him, not why they don't like Starmer.

daimbarsatemydogsbone · 07/06/2022 15:32

Bookies have better odds of Boris not being leader for next election than for him fighting it.

Blossomtoes · 07/06/2022 15:32

Starmer has turned Labour into a place the Owen Jones' of the world don't feel welcome at anymore

Very true. That’s a pretty ringing endorsement for me.

Morte · 07/06/2022 15:34

I don’t care about local elections, just general elections.
Boris Johnson as PM, saying a basically common sense sentence which Keir Starmer can’t bring himself to say because of Twitter, was a good thing. Johnson isn’t great, but not every single thing the Conservatives have done is awful. Everyone squealing that they are the reason for a high cost of living conveniently forgets they have presided over the lowest cost of living in Europe for decades. We have always had it very cheap compared to our neighbours.
They dished out furlough - I would never have thought to see a Tory govt do such a thing. Millions of people sitting on their arses in the sun making sourdough and being paid up to £30k for it. Topping up UC, being VERY clear it was temporary and then more squealing when people COULD get back to work about how mean they were for expecting those who can work to keep working. Those who do work get to keep more of their pay.
They u-turned over the school meals. I WANT a govt who will change their minds for good campaigning and reasoning.
More screeching “have a windfall tax! Do something!” Result was windfall tax and up to £1200 for the most vulnerable but £400 to everyone, tax payer or not. But moan, whinge moan, “it’s not enough.” Endless whining of people who want more benefits but are enraged by paying more NI. Whenever the Conservatives do exactly what Labour would do, the left immediately shriek how mean it all is. It’s pathetic, it really is.

i don’t give a shit about his cheese and wine. I just don’t. And I don’t think I’m the only one.

SleeplessInEngland · 07/06/2022 15:37

"i don’t give a shit about his cheese and wine. I just don’t. And I don’t think I’m the only one."

You're not the only one. But 6 months of consistent polling shows you're in the minority, and for many in that minority it seems really hard to accept that's what it is.

You are plainly not alone. You have listed a lot of negatives about all non Tories - what positive things do you have to say about why Boris is fit to lead us?

brianixon · 07/06/2022 15:40

My Tory MP went on the record before the result last night about voting against Boris.
Boris only had one real 'job' which was to end the strife over Brexit. He did that and should have been replaced soon after. Without Boris the toxic acrimony of the Teresa May days would have gone on and on. At least we have moved on from that.

I am pleased he faced the the Vote of Confidence, I am pleased so many voted against him and pleased a leadership contest is not imminent. He is damaged though, I think 148 was a surprise to most MPs. His days are numbered, but be careful what you wish for.
We are doomed until a party can produce a real Agenda showing how we can all be helped to have a better life. Policies, ambitions, likely outcomes and costs.

We all deserve better than what we have now.

You can change your name but not your writing style apparently. They're back with a new set of whatabouts 🍺and 🐿

WatsonsToeTag · 07/06/2022 15:42

I also don't give a shit about cheese and wine.

But I do give a massive shit about lying to parliament over it. About lying to the police and about thousands of ordinary people getting fines for much less while the people who should have faced the flack in the government, slink off. I want better standards of behaviour from the people in charge.

I also care greatly about how divisive politics is become (see posts above, from both sides, that basically just slag off people who vote for someone different to the poster) and believe this current government speaks in ways that further drives division. It doesn't have to be that way: not everyone who votes Tory is cruel and not everyone who votes Labour is a whinger.

Yeah, it's the same one or two demented boris apologists. Still, it's fun to shoot the shit from time to time regardless of what new name they're using.

So Boris is a liar, but starmer merely guilty of “expediency.”
you fail to convince this voter of the squeaky preacher’s virtues, I’m afraid.

It’s about much bigger and more important things than wine and cheese. Perhaps CCO should have briefed you better. This isn’t an easy crowd.

Ok. So it appears that your positives are simply the govt reluctantly and eventually implementing policies that have been suggested by others. Even your praise is lacklustre really.

It's not a ringing endorsement is it?

Exactly this - plainly there are plenty of Tories who don't approve of Boris.
Weirdly they don't seem to post - we only get the "but Starmer" ones.

There are degrees of lying, but ultimately I'd take someone who props up a shitty leader (Starmer) versus a plain ol' shitty leader (Johnson).

But hey, we talked about Starmer instead of Johnson for a few posts despite the thread topic being about the latter, so I guess your work here is done. 😃

ivykaty44 · 07/06/2022 15:47

But i think the Tories will realise this and make the changes required to get rid before the Autumn.

how will they do this? They can’t have another vote for 12 months - so Johnson is leader of the Tory’s for at least 12 months.

RufustheFloralmissingreindeer · 07/06/2022 15:48

I get he's not popular amongst the remainer mumsnetters but outside of the Mumsnet bubble more people do support him

my dad has voted tory all his life, will never not vote tory, voted for brexit and wouldn’t know what mumsnet was if i downloaded on to his ipad and hit him round the head with it

he loved BJ when he was first prime minister…loathes him now

this is why the tory party is in trouble

Find me evidence anywhere that anyone in the Parliamentry Labour Party has ever said men can grow cervixes. Post a link and, depending on the source, I might take you seriously.

For someone who thinks Boris is wonderful you don't have much to say about him - always on about the other guy.

forinborin · 07/06/2022 15:49

I am pleased from a pro-Boris perspective. If not for him, my birth country would not have existed by now. I find this obsession about who partied where a bit strange, to be honest, there are bigger issues at stake.

Morte · 07/06/2022 15:49

And there you go! “Demented Boris Apologists”. Bonkers. If someone has a different opinion they are “demented”. That’s why Mumsnet always gets it so wrong when it comes to real life.

Whatever. Maybe you want a govt that never does a u-turn when they’re wrong or a leader who is too frightened to say that women are women actually because Twitter. It doesn’t matter to me. The Tories won, they will likely win again. The Opposition isn’t currently fit for purpose.

“But starmer” is important. We are being invited to believe this man is a viable alternative. You can hate the tories til the cows come home but in the real world, you have to consider the alternative.

The 'one year safe' rule isn't worth the paper it's written on. It can be changed very easily if enough MPs want it to be.
