I'm not a boo-er, it doesn't come naturally to me. Yet thinking of the photo of the queen, alone, at her husband's funeral contrasted with his snivelling 'apology' for tolerating depraved behaviour in his workplace together with his other contemptuous behaviour over the course of parliament, I'd have found it hard to resist. His presence just seems like adding more insult to injury.

Yes quite! Polite letters get ignored, boos get results!

Bingo cards at the ready. I am sure that the usual suspects will be along soon.

@JaniieJones any chance of an explanation as to why Tory MPs are voting today on whether they have confidence or not in Boris Johnson, since all he has done whilst Prime Minister is eat cake occasionally and say goodbye to departing colleagues?

Obviously the Tory MPs are all leftist infiltrators 😜

Pretty sure that Jacob Rees-Mogg was using the argument that this is all over a 'piece of birthday cake' - that won't wash any more. Nor will being told to 'move on' - although I suspect there will be lots of talk of moving on if Mr Johnson survives this vote...

Not the same Rees-Mogg who sees no problem with saying Theresa May should go after winning a VoNC with 117, but that Boris should stay even if he only wins by one.

I think the guy is full of shit.

So predictable from Downing Street communication team. Time to form a square around 'Big Dog' just like they did around the Prittster when her bullying conduct came under scrutiny.

I really, really, really hope there are enough decent Tory MPs out there, who want to shift this set of chancers & truth twisters out!

Getting on with the job? All Johnson has been doing is trying to save his own skin for months! The French managed to have an election while the Ukraine conflict has been going. Pretty sure the UK could cope with having a different PM - who is going to have to sort out the oven-ready half-baked Brexit & preside over and take the flak for the eventual Covid response inquiry.

The bigger the ship, the more people it can drag to their doom as it sinks.

Of course silly me. The wrong type of MPs, yes of course.

ThreeonaHill · 06/06/2022 18:34

Surely all MPs and ministers know that his time is over. If he doesn't go tonight, it will be in the next few months. Why are they still insisting on defending him, knowing it gives them no credibility?

They don't want it to be true. Bear in mind a lot of them owe their position to him, either MPs who wouldn't have their seats if not for his appeal with a particular section of the electorate or ministers who have been promoted for their loyalty not their competence.

They are politicians - and Tory ones to boot.

If I had fuck all integrity, I'd publicly back Boris while voting against in a secret ballot.

The idea of Boris being outraged at being lied to is too much for me to contain.

Baggyeye · 06/06/2022 21:16

Shame on the 211 Tory MPs who think that Johnson is the best they can offer to lead their party/ the Government / act in the best interests of the country.

newnamethanks · 07/06/2022 13:11

The Red Wall Tories know that the end of Boris means the end of their gravy train. They didn't expect to find themselves on it and they won't get off until they're pushed at the next GE. No Johnson, no seat.

That's one explanation, but I don't know how far we square it with the numbers of those who have appointed positions v backbenchers. Red Wall MPs, being newer as a cohort, are more likely to still be backbench than those from elsewhere. And it seems likely that those who have appointed positions, ie Cabinet, PPS etc would be more likely to back him to protect those positions. Rory Stewart's take on it was that 75% of those not on the payroll voted no confidence.

twitter.com/RoryStewartUK/status/1533904725782953984

Obviously with a secret ballot we can't be sure, but bear in mind as well that Red Wall MPs are mostly sitting on smaller majorities. They're less likely to be able to survive going against the will of their constituents on issues like this.

I’m not sure about that. I suspect a fair number of votes for Johnson to go came from them. Feedback from their constituents shows that he’s now a Labour electoral asset and I can’t imagine that many of them want to keep him.

If adults have to act with such immaturity they will be seen as being unable to put across their point of view in an articulate manner.
booing is for pantomime and children.

Works though. Apparently it was the tipping point that caused some dithering MPs to submit their letters.
