To enjoy Love Island

I've watched every series, I really enjoy it. It's a great hour each evening.

I know people generally look down on programmes like this but don't actually watch them. I can't be the only one?

Maybe check them out towards the end of the show, they are definitely bigger then! All that free food and drink and nothing much to do all day

😁 I've just got home from holiday and I can relate to that!

brookstar · 02/06/2022 10:03

don’t watch those either. To be honest, I don’t watch much TV outside of documentaries or anime - which I’m sure plenty have opinions on. I just dislike the concept of reality TV.

And that's fine!! What isn't fine, is calling people who do like reality tv idiots!

I think it’s harmful and dumbs down the population. An opiate of the masses, for lack of a better term. It creates unrealistic standards and sells a certain lifestyle, which isn’t the message we should be sending.

It's a load of absolute fucking tripe. Cheap and nasty titillating bollocks made for people who have nothing better to do in their lives.

Shameful, shambolic, SHITE!

I LOVE IT! Grin Can't wait for it to start!!!

This a million times over... I can't wait

But does that mean everyone who watches reality tv is stupid? No.

People are complex and nuanced, with many sides to them. It’s a stupid thing to do, but I don’t think that means that everything an individual does is stupid. That particular thing though, is daft in my opinion.

Can't wait to see this years line up!!

I'm of the opinion of engaging with a wide range of media is a good thing. Not everything we do needs to be high brow, educational or meaningful. Sometimes light, mindless entertainment is just what we want/need.

I don’t see what’s entertaining about fake tanned muppets running around acting like fools. To me it just sums up what’s wrong with society. And I question why people want to see it. Why not live your own life instead of watching someone else’s?

LuckySantangelo35 · 02/06/2022 10:27

balalake · 31/05/2022 20:31

So you are content to watch a programme where two former contestants and a former presenter have committed suicide?

@balalake

They didn’t complete suicide because of love island. If you look into it more you will see there other factors in their lives which led them to ending their lives. It would be wrong to suggest that being on a tv programme is culpable for their deaths.

This discussion about lower pleasures and young people not reading enough poetry isn't new. I don't think anyone denies it's trashy, but that's personal taste.

@ForestFae

“why not live your own life own instead of watching others?”

Erm well I don’t think watching a tv programme for an hour each night means that you’re not living your life! Bit weird to suggest that

GirlInACountrySong · 02/06/2022 10:29

@forestfae

Muppets?? How rude are you?

MacaroniBaloney · 02/06/2022 10:30

It starts to summer for me! I bloody love it.

Cannot wait will watch it all. Just hope they're not sponsored by that same hideous clothing company which meant the girls could only wear a selection of awful clothes on rotation.

I prefer to see their natural style.

Off to Telly Addicts to find the first thread.....

brookstar · 02/06/2022 10:34

Do you genuinely think people are watching this instead of living their own lives?? It's an hour long programme.....

If I spend an hour reading a book am I not living my own life? Or watching soaps, or playing a computer game?

Books and computer games tell a story and are a form of art. Soaps I think are almost as much of a waste of time as Love Island. Of course, live your life as you wish but I think if someone finds reality tv interesting or fun, some introspection may benefit them

josil · 02/06/2022 10:38

YABU. I tried a whole series the molly mae one and haven't watched one since - it's brain numbing

I would actually suggest that people who judge others for their choice of TV programme are ones needing to reflect on their own narrow mindedness. Superiority is not a good look!

I'm a university academic and during the various lockdowns me and my wider team bonded over MAFS Australia and tiger king. They kept us all going and was a wonderful distraction from all the other shit that was going on. It was a shared experience that brought us together. I'm sure I'd love island had been in that would have also been on the list.

Fucking hell....COMPUTER GAMES!??!!!

Fairislefandango · 02/06/2022 11:08

What's wrong with computer games (unless they are the ultra violent ones with harmful stereotypes etc)? Nobody is really objecting to things like Love Island only on the basis that it's just entertainment. Nobody is suggesting that all entertainment has to be highbrow or educational. There is nothing wrong with fiction or games for entertainment's sake.

What's wrong with the worst kinds of reality tv is that they are not creative or fiction, nor are they real life. They are a cynical manipulation of the behaviour and lives of real people for the amusement of others. It's one thing being entertained by the appearance and behaviour of characters in fiction, because you know they are made-up characters. It's different when they are real people and their relationships, behaviour and physical attributes are being dissected and judged by the public.

I've seen stuff about her, she is the one who was made creative director of a fashion brand and came out with "we all have the same 24 hours in a day" gubbins.

It's not her fault, but I'm sure there are people who actually worked their arses off going to university and doing shite jobs to work their way up and she was made creative director of a company just because she was on telly. Then has the nerve to make tone deaf comments about everybody having the same 24 hours in a day.

These people need to have a little more self awareness.

I have no idea what either of those are. Being a university academic is great but I don’t think that justifies the harm reality TV causes
