I LOVE my engagement ring - but worried it looks tacky?

My (for now) BF let me pick my engagement ring. Would’ve spent up to £100 on it but I knew he wasn’t having the best time financially and we have other priorities (our 1 year old, a house, car payments etc). I follow a company on Instagram and the rings she has are all cubic zirconia and sterling silver for £40-£60. Mine was in the £40 range but is BEAUTIFUL. Her rings don’t rust or turn fingers green and are really sparkly. It’s much bigger in person than the pictures made it look which is my concern … don’t want to look like a wannabe WAG (my boyfriend dies football and worried his group might say something! Or the girlfriends from the group!)

Be honest with me - if you saw this on a lady would you think it looked cheap, tacky? What would your thoughts be. And don’t say it shouldn’t matter! It doesn’t to me but want to prepare myself for what others might say to me! I love him and don’t care how much it costs.

Give us a photo of it on your hand to give some perspective.

On first look it's a pretty ring and I think it's better it's not a diamond anyway as diamonds have a shady history and also have a lot of properties that make them less good than a cubic zirconia. Read into diamonds and DeBeers clever marketing. I'm surprised as many people still want them so much.

I have a precious stone on my ring that I was worried would stand out, but it's mainly that first few weeks when it feels new to you and you hold your hand funny. Then you realise no one notices rings much and you don't think about it so often.

Congratulations and good luck x

WooNoodle · 31/05/2022 20:36

I genuinely wouldn't even register it. I'd just think an engagement ring.

PurpleButterflyWings · 31/05/2022 20:36

Does look like a dress ring rather than an engagement ring IMO. But it's a nice ring!

What do you mean your 'boyfriend for now' though @princesspollysmum ??

paintingcolors · 31/05/2022 20:36

I think it's beautiful.

BeenHereForYonkyDoodles · 31/05/2022 20:37

Its beautiful, wear it with pride! Congratulations to you both.

FirstFallopians · 31/05/2022 20:37

The size of the stone is the giveaway. Unless your DP (or you!) are a hedge fund manager or something, most people would know it’s costume jewellery as a diamond, or even a lab grown diamond would cost £££. That’s not a big deal though.

I think the bigger issue though is how long you can expect a bit of costume jewellery to stand up to everyday wear. Even with great reviews, I wouldn’t expect it to last long term.

HighlandCowbag · 31/05/2022 20:38

It's beautiful 😍. Congratulations on your engagement.

Onwards22 · 31/05/2022 20:38

Does it matter if some people don’t like it?

You say you love it so that’s all that matters.

Stop being so concerned about other peoples views.

LittleBoPeepHasLostHerShit · 31/05/2022 20:39

I'm guessing "boyfriend for now" means he's not her husband yet.

Idontgiveashitanymore · 31/05/2022 20:39

I love it . Wear and enjoy it

Choopi · 31/05/2022 20:39

I'd probably notice it because I'm a silversmith and make rings but I wouldn't think anything of it if you know what I mean? I'm a big believer of wearing the jewellery that makes you happy and if you live it then it is perfect.

MiniCooperLover · 31/05/2022 20:40

It's not tacky, as long as you are happy with it that's that matters. I'd take it off when you wash your hands or anything else, it'll tarnish quickly otherwise.

Thissucksmonkeynuts · 31/05/2022 20:40

An engaging is totally personal, if you love it, then that's brilliant.

BiscuitLover3678 · 31/05/2022 20:42

like others have said it looks very obviously fake but that’s also ok. If you Love if then you love it. It’s your engagement so go for it.

ReginaGeorgeismyname · 31/05/2022 20:43

I love it. Can you pm me the company please? I want one

Whatthechicken · 31/05/2022 20:45

It’s lovely. Congratulations, you both have bigger priorities and you’ve chosen a ring that you love and suits your budget…I think you’ll be grand. I lost the diamond out of my ring and although it was replaced, it’s made me feel like I don’t want to wear my ring (I do a lot of gardening). An engagement ring should be worn and enjoyed! Congratulations again.

Sexnotgender · 31/05/2022 20:47

It’s not my taste but you obviously love it so wear it with pride. Who cares what anyone else thinks!

Cakecakecheese · 31/05/2022 20:48

If you love it then that's the only thing that matters.

This.

Congratulations!

Blowyourowntrumpet · 31/05/2022 20:51

It's gorgeous. Enjoy it

onlythreenow · 31/05/2022 20:51

Congratulations. The only thing that matters is how you feel about the ring. You love it, and that's enough. It's a pretty ring, and if anyone thinks it looks "tacky" then the problem lies with them. There is no law saying an engagement ring has to be a diamond, or gold, or whatever - it is a token of love.

FlissyPaps · 31/05/2022 20:51

My engagement ring is the same as that but it’s real and was 13k.

Congratulations. 😅

OP - it’s a beautiful ring. The main thing is, is that you’re happy. Who cares how much it costs, or what stone it is. You can’t put a price on love or happiness.

Ilkleymoor · 31/05/2022 20:52

I respect people more who get cubic zirconia rather blood diamonds, so wear yours with pride.

OvOvO · 31/05/2022 20:53

You really shouldn't care what your friends or randoms on the internet think. If YOU like the ring what does it matter what others think?

Aconitum · 31/05/2022 20:55

Mine was a second hand (vintage they call it now) delicate victorian twist with three tiny diamonds that suited my hand beautifully and I still love it. The trend at the time was for solitaire diamonds or large sapphires like Princess Diana's but the only ones that I quite liked were way out of our budget and I just absolutely loved the one I chose. I still wear it every day and we have been married for 40 years this year.
