I LOVE my engagement ring - but worried it looks tacky?

My (for now) BF let me pick my engagement ring. Would’ve spent up to £100 on it but I knew he wasn’t having the best time financially and we have other priorities (our 1 year old, a house, car payments etc). I follow a company on Instagram and the rings she has are all cubic zirconia and sterling silver for £40-£60. Mine was in the £40 range but is BEAUTIFUL. Her rings don’t rust or turn fingers green and are really sparkly. It’s much bigger in person than the pictures made it look which is my concern … don’t want to look like a wannabe WAG (my boyfriend dies football and worried his group might say something! Or the girlfriends from the group!)

Be honest with me - if you saw this on a lady would you think it looked cheap, tacky? What would your thoughts be. And don’t say it shouldn’t matter! It doesn’t to me but want to prepare myself for what others might say to me! I love him and don’t care how much it costs.

It's not to my taste, but I applaud the sensible price tag!

Twillow · 31/05/2022 22:23

It's not a typical engagement ring style at all, but it is very pretty, sort of vintage looking. If that's your style go for it!

Oblomov22 · 31/05/2022 22:25

It's huge, so obviously cheap costume jewellery, £40 cubic zirconia, rather than a diamond that would cost £22k to £40k for that size.
If you like it, that's all that matters.

MushMonster · 31/05/2022 22:27

A beautiful classic cut! And it looks gorgeous!
Congratulations OP.
Wear it proudly when he finally puts it on your finger.

fallfallfall · 31/05/2022 22:27

you loving it is the important part. it doesn't look genuine though.

twilightermummy · 31/05/2022 22:34

I think it looks beautiful. You’ve done well finding it at that price. My sister has a similar ring, real diamonds, much more expensive but looks pretty much the same!

NRRK28 · 31/05/2022 22:36

My engagement ring also is 2ct diamond so its pretty big. Lots if people assume it was fake diamond because its pretty big. But who cares i love it. I don't care what other people says. As long as you love it just go for it.

StrongCoffeAvalanche · 31/05/2022 22:36

I think it's lovely!

Thesefeetaremadeforwalking · 31/05/2022 22:36

Who cares what people think?

If you like it, and you have the right man, just be happy !

Congratulations !

wanderingscot · 31/05/2022 22:37

It's a nice design. But how would it fit with a wedding ring. I don't think it would. I like to wear my engagement and wedding ring all the time so I chose rings that sit together nicely. Also, how durable is it? I'd worry something so cheap would break apart after a few years. I'd want the real deal - proper gold and maybe fake stones or the real ones if you can afford it.

FirstFallopians · 31/05/2022 20:37

The size of the stone is the giveaway. Unless your DP (or you!) are a hedge fund manager or something, most people would know it’s costume jewellery as a diamond, or even a lab grown diamond would cost £££. That’s not a big deal though.

I think the bigger issue though is how long you can expect a bit of costume jewellery to stand up to everyday wear. Even with great reviews, I wouldn’t expect it to last long term.

Lab grown would cost thousands ...

tootiredtoocare · 31/05/2022 22:42

I like it. I wear silver and cz all the time (my wedding and engagement rings are both silver). I think most people would realise it's not 'real' diamond, simply because a diamond that big would be an enormous amount of money. Just be enigmatic - I love it, I'm so lucky! No further comment, let them make their own decisions about it. If you love it, it's real.

Foxglovesandlilacs86 · 31/05/2022 20:58

🤦🏻‍♀️ I don’t know why I felt the need to share that tbh but I felt like it was relevant at the time 😂

@FlissyPaps that poster I’m pretty sure is talking bollocks anyway 😂 that ring looks 4ct+ and unless it’s spectacularly poor quality, would cost £80k minimum.

eddiemairswife · 31/05/2022 22:44

My engagement ring was bought by my ex-husband from a second -hand shop in Bristol, where we were students, in 1959; it cost just over £3. I still wear it.

onlywork55 · 31/05/2022 22:44

It’s unlikely I’d really notice, but if I stopped to think about it I suppose I would guess it is fake. Just because the stone is so big and very few people can afford a diamond that size. I think it’s lovely though.

MintyCedricRidesAgain · 31/05/2022 22:50

I'd probably be able to tell it wasn't the real thing but it's really pretty, definitely not tacky and anyone worth worrying about will just be delighted that you're happy and love your ring.

CambsAlways · 31/05/2022 22:54

It’s not my taste! But hey you love it and wear it with pride congrats ,why would it concern you what other people think!

ManateeFair · 31/05/2022 22:56

Congratulations!

I think it’s a lovely ring and certainly not tacky. Really pretty and I bet it looks lovely on.

(What IS tacky, though, is people being judgemental about other people’s engagement rings. Anyone who sneers at someone else’s engagement ring is absolutely devoid of class.)

I much prefer silver to gold and most real diamonds are really unethical. I think you’ve made a really nice choice. I’ve got silver rings that I’ve been wearing for 30 years and they’ve lasted beautifully. I just take them off for dirty/manual jobs - but I’d do that with any ring.

Grandmum1 · 31/05/2022 23:00

It’s gorgeous, congratulations x

TabithaTittlemouse · 31/05/2022 23:02

It’s not something I would wear but if you like it that’s all that matters!
It’s a bit too bling for me.

Nein9 · 31/05/2022 23:05

I like it, and the sensible price tag! I cringe at the thought of tens of thousands being spent on rings, I'd say no if my partner proposed after spending £1000s on a flipping ring. 😂

PerfectionValley · 31/05/2022 23:09

I think it looks nice and much more expensive than it was.

Does it look oversized on your finger?

Sumshinebound · 31/05/2022 23:11

Lovely ring would just go for a smaller stone personally

Cherryblossoms85 · 31/05/2022 23:32

It's a lovely design. The main thing though is that you guys sound like a great team with the right priority, and I'm sure you will live a long and happy marriage.

adhdforme · 31/05/2022 23:43

Judging from the title and the post I was expecting something really very tacky, but the ring is lovely OP. Very classy. Congratulations on your engagement!
