Why do people post this? If you don’t believe a poster, report them. Troll hunting is tedious for everyone. It is as tedious as posters who fancy themselves as a trainee Miss Marple. Cross examining the OP to an absurd degree to try and pick holes in their post. People have the option to report and should leave it at that.

OP posts:

I might start using the Irish version-

“You did in your hole”.

Or "did you think I came up the Lagan in a bubble"

mycatallowsmetolivehere · 02/06/2022 08:15

My version ... " dae a look like a come up the Clyde in a banana boat ? "

WomanStanleyWoman2 · 02/06/2022 08:45

Which means you are happy with the consequential hundreds of MNers suckered into giving money, goods sharing their own pain or grief on an issue in the belief they are helping someone in genuine need rather than a troll or pervert or the latest goady MRA. Yes who gives a hoot about any of those women?

But again, what makes you think troll hunting automatically puts a stop to this? If people believe the OP, why do you think they’ll suddenly switch allegiance and believe the troll hunter instead? If anything, people who believe the OP are likely to feel more sympathetic if they think ‘On top of everything else she’s got to put up with troll hunters’.

Yes! Agree with every word of this.

I agree

I think the majority of mumsnetters can spot a troll quicker than mnhq because they are there all the time.

It's ridiculous that there is a rule that stops the protection of other members. Sure sometimes they can get it wrong, but I'd say they are right more often than not - as evidenced by the removal of many threads.

My version ... " dae a look like a come up the Clyde in a banana boat ? "

I used to say this until an ex boyfriend gasped and pointed out how racist it was. Of course, it IS, I just hadn't thought too hard about it

I pointed it out to my mother later but she still defiantly uses it.

mycatallowsmetolivehere · 02/06/2022 21:56

@janeseymour78 I've never thought or intended that to be a racist comment ?
It was said to me as a child ,
I always took it as someone's sailing on water in a boat made of a banana skin .. which of course would be as ridiculous as the story I was questioning?

Changechangychange · 03/06/2022 13:25

@mycatallowsmetolivehere unfortunately that isn’t what a banana boat is. It’s a ship carrying migrants from the West Indies.

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banana_boat_(ship)

That phrase means “do you think I’m as stupid as a black person?” So pretty bad really and best avoided.

mycatallowsmetolivehere · 03/06/2022 17:55

@Changechangychange I feel slightly told off ?
As I'm too old for anyone to tell me off and don't have a racist bone in my body , let's just agree that I shall not be sailing up any river in a boat made of banana skin and likewise shall continue to doubt half the threads on here

BIWI · 03/06/2022 18:13

Well, @mycatallowsmetolivehere, you may feel told off, but I don't think that's the case. It's been pointed out that it's a racist saying - so even if you don't think you have a racist bone in your body, perhaps you need to admit that the phrase you didn't understand is racist!

SerendipityJane · 03/06/2022 18:17

Funnily enough "Did ye aye" was what I said last night when I read Prince Andrew "had Covid".

I then fell down a rabbit hole wondering if there was a form "Did ya aye ?"

Exactly how old to you have to be before you can use the ‘So what? I’m old’ defence if your behaviour or attitudes are questioned?

mycatallowsmetolivehere · 03/06/2022 18:44

Hey no need for a pile on ! I already said I have never ever known this phrase to be used in that way , I was surprised when first responder said it ! I would never intentionally offend anyone so please don't try and start negative undertones on a light hearted thread !

Changechangychange · 03/06/2022 18:46

@mycatallowsmetolivehere I’m hardly telling you off - just explaining what a banana boat actually is, and how that phrase is likely to be taken.

Up to you if you want to continue to use it of course. I personally wouldn’t.

mycatallowsmetolivehere · 03/06/2022 18:48

No @Changechangychange I won't . As I said that was a total surprise , hate it that I've never realised or been told that

There was no " so what , I'm old " attitude

Wow, I had no idea on this, but now explained makes total sense.

Hello everyone and thanks for your thoughts. We don't think troll hunting is worse than trolling - but in some circumstances it can be just as damaging.

Troll hunting breaks our guidelines because trolls really love it when you troll hunt - they do, it gives them a kick and they need to get those kicks where they can. But, most importantly, when someone is genuine and in a desperate situation, a load of posts calling bullshit can be pretty devastating. We've have seen this happen many times and, frankly, it's awful.

Some times it's really obvious someone is trolling, other times not so much. We'd prefer it if you report to us rather than air your suspicions on the thread. These posts will be deleted if reported to us and repeat offenders may be banned.

You will appreciate that the new system which exposes reporters' contact details by design (as per thread in Site Stuff) is not a great inducement to report anything, especially considering malicious data breaches which have happened here.

Its not surprising if people post on threads instead of reporting at the moment.
