Why do people post this? If you don’t believe a poster, report them. Troll hunting is tedious for everyone. It is as tedious as posters who fancy themselves as a trainee Miss Marple. Cross examining the OP to an absurd degree to try and pick holes in their post. People have the option to report and should leave it at that.

I've put a lot of thought into what Mumsnet could consider a troll. Say someone posts as being a man, then posts as being a woman, and changes their ages in the posts. They couldn't possibly be both, but why is that considered a troll, when they could be changing who they are in the scenario for privacy? What about when the "troll" is writing a made up scenario with fake family members but could translate to a scenario they are actually in, again for privacy? I don't think most "trolls" come with bad intentions, and I also think its unfair for people to be able to label everyone who says something that could be untrue because of what they have previously submitted as a "troll". I'm sure these people are aware that Mumsnet build profiles on users based on what they have said under each name change and want privacy from them too.

I love it. It's calling someone out in a way that makes me smile.

GordonBennetttt · 31/05/2022 20:51

Of all the things that never happened, this never happened the most. Proper makes me giggle😂

fallfallfall · 31/05/2022 20:53

i love the comment, love a good troll hunt and miss marple detective work!
so much bs on mn, read once as much as 80% of treads are fabrications.

See I love a good tread - my DMs make amazing treads in the ❄️

I see some variation of posters not believing an OP in most threads. It is tedious. Just report it.

I do agree picking holes or worse still looking back at poster’s previous posts to find inconsistencies is tedious

^ me too. It also fails to recognise the sensible precaution many posters take of changing details across threads to stay anonymous. When I see people say but DC was 10 yesterday and is now 12??? I think give over, it makes no difference to the advice she's after etc.

Eeebleeb · 31/05/2022 21:02

So tired of hearing that these fuckwits are "creative writers!" I know a LOT of "creative writers." They do not get their material this way and nor are they antisocial pricks.

Yeah, because having a 10 year old on a parenting site is sooooooo unique.

Trolls lie.
Then get caught out.
Then say they changed their 10 year old into a cauliflower for privacy reasons.

In fairness, they're the least harmful ones. Possibly not even trolls. Just idiots who think their situations (a 10 year old, with a teacher, etc) makes them special.

So where do the troll defenders stand on the scammers and the dead and dying fake children? @Flymetothezoom

Abcdefu · 31/05/2022 21:06

Did ye aye - derry girls

I've seen no such near as many instances.

SpiderinaWingMirror · 31/05/2022 21:08

I've occasionally put something similar. Usually when it's an emotive topic and people are invested in something that looks like a troll. I report as well but just a heads up is worth it I think.

Meraas · 31/05/2022 21:08

‘Did ye aye’ is not troll hunting.

buckeejit · 31/05/2022 21:10

Aye dead on.

AssignedSlytherinAtBirth · 31/05/2022 21:17

Of course you did, dear.

Flymetothezoom · 31/05/2022 21:17

Obviously I am not a fan of people who invent dead children. That is why I use the report button. I have no need to declare on the thread how clever I am, by openly doubting the OP.

OP posts:
Flymetothezoom · 31/05/2022 21:19

@buckeejit ”did ye aye” is the same as saying you think the OP is lying, of course it is troll hunting.

FayeFife · 31/05/2022 21:19

Because it’s funny.
There has to be a laugh along the way.

Mangogogogo · 31/05/2022 21:19

I said something similar on a recent thread. I don’t think she was a troll but I don’t think she said that. I think she was lying about what she said because she was going to be ripped to shreds on here if she’s written how she truly reacted 😂

I don't agree

If I was following a thread and perhaps taken in by a sob story

This comment ( perfect as I am also Scottish ) would highlight to me the potential that it was all a big jobbie!

Not saying I would automatically join the " it's a troll brigade " but it would make me think

h0tXberns · 31/05/2022 21:30

Whatever Trevor

StoneofDestiny · 31/05/2022 21:31

It's just the Scottish way of saying 'I find it hard to believe'. That's an opinion like any other (but I can't say I see it too often on here, but I might be looking at the wrong threads).

StoneofDestiny · 31/05/2022 21:31

I don't think because one poster disbelieves something that a post should be deleted!

FOJN · 31/05/2022 21:34

Some threads are clearly made up but are quite funny so I think phrases which give posters a heads up can help to stop posters taking it too seriously. Some seem unbelievable but could be true so it can help stop posters becoming over invested.

I've always wanted to post this link for obvious trolls..
