To be annoyed about the Jubilee

I know I’m being miserable but I’m bloody pissed off about the sodding Jubilee! I went to sainsburys this morning, paid £1.68 a litre for petrol and then popped in to be confronted by bottles of champagne! The last thing I feel like doing is celebrating! I spent all morning cancelling non-essential DDs as things are really tight with the rise in energy prices and the increased NI contribution.
funny how this ‘magic money tree’ can be harvested to pay for this event when people are genuinely struggling and are told to ‘get a better paid job’! I have a bloody well paid job, thankyou, but am still feeling the pinch. I know people are going to say that the economy will benefit - but how? If people spend more then inflation will rise and the BOE will put up the mortgage rates! I despair!

I'm not a royalist however I do think this is something she should celebrate she's 96 and has spent 70 years in service, regardless of her wealth she's put others before herself and I hope she has a lovely time. I'm not partaking in any events or picnics but I hope those that do have a good time. A lot of people need something to smile about at the moment.

serenghetti2011 · 30/05/2022 14:01

I’m working on Friday happily. apparently they are having a party in the street and I’ve got to move my car. Which I can’t as I’m a nurse as it’s got my kit in it. Thankfully I’ll be out most of the day but means boyfriend and kids are stuck in all day if we can’t get out of the street.

Mamamia7962 · 30/05/2022 14:02

Beautiful3 - But that isn't what the Jubilee celebration is about. We are celebrating the Queen's 70 year reign. It is her Jubilee, not the Royal Family's.

Stellaris22 · 30/05/2022 14:02

YANBU and I find the ‘should we all sit at home being miserable’ attitude nasty. Completely misses the point that celebrating a person born into immense wealth and privilege isn’t a joyous occasion when you can’t afford to pay your bills.

Enjoy the extra bank holidays but remember lots of low paid and struggling people will be a. working and b. unable to enjoy it.

CharlotteRose90 · 30/05/2022 14:03

Yep I’m pissed off over it. My neighbours are all having street parties during the day and I’m on nights this weekend which means no sleep for me. They tried telling me that the street will be blocked so I can’t get out with my car. Had fun in telling them that unless they have the council permit then the road is open and I’ll be leaving. 🤣🤣

RaspberryChouxBuns · 30/05/2022 14:04

To be fair everytime I see the Queen she looks just as pissed off about it as we are.

They need a council permit to close the road. So you can get in and out of your road and they have to move.

Benjispruce4 · 30/05/2022 14:05

I think media make it worst. U.K. be avoiding Zoe Ball on R2 as I feel she may well combust from sycophancy if there is such a thing. Gorgeous girl/boy/queen!!!We love her/him!! 🙄No we don’t!!

Benjispruce4 · 30/05/2022 14:05

U.K.?? I typed I’ll

TullyApplebottom · 30/05/2022 14:05

Op I sympathise - I will be feeling similar when the World Cup is on and everyone is happy to ignore the human rights abuses it is linked with. At the end of the day the jubilee seems much more benign to me

maythe4thbewithme · 30/05/2022 14:05

What a fun sponge you are

It's a once in a lifetime and probably our kids too

Newsflash champagne is sold all year round not just during the jubilee

thegreenlight · 30/05/2022 14:05

To be fair, I’m a teacher and organised the entire celebration at school. I booked guests, organised food, decorated so I’m not totally miserable. It was just after paying soooooo much money for petrol and having to up my food and petrol budget at the the detriment of things I actually WANT to spend money on. We should be rioting in the street, not holding bloody parties! My family are ok financially but even so I’m feeling things tightening and resent the current situation. Let them eat cake, indeed! I know it’s the Tories to blame for the economic climate but it’s highly insensitive to celebrate a privileged family when people are choosing between heating their house and feeding their children.

Yes they totally started the war in Ukraine 🤔

It's a massive historical event for England and there's always going to be money thrown around when poor people are struggling. That's never going to change, I can't change it I can only change how I live my life, so imo, let's just enjoy the party. Life is too short, I don't want to spend it bitter and angry because I dont have more money. So my neighbours and I are having our humble street party, will toast the Queen and her reign, eat some trifle and be able to look back in 50 years and think, that was a fun party the Jubilee was a great weekend, I'm glad I made the most of it. Instead of, I sat in my house stewing in frustration and anger. What a waste of a summer weekend that would be.

She is the Queen of the UK , not just England.
And I don’t think it’s a massive historical event - nothing will change as a result of this celebration. If people want to mark the day as special that’s their choice , and I hope they enjoy it. But it is a monumental waste of money considering the hardships many people are facing at the moment .

Cherry55 · 30/05/2022 14:07

The only benefit I see is that people will make money from it and I genuinely hope they do. Hope people selling themed items and the hospitality rinse this for all it's worth.

I'm self employed so no bank holiday benefit and if I'm honest, the timing has made it all so tone deaf with all the horror out there, so struggling to get on board with it. But if normal people can get something out of it, that makes me feel better.

Dinotour · 30/05/2022 14:09

To those moaning about how much is being spent- how much is it? What's the return on it?

Whilst it's sad some can't afford to buy whatever, it's good for people who can afford to, to be spending money- it helps the economy and god forbid they might enjoy themselves. Should the shops just be selling pasta, gruel and tinned goods so no one feels left out? How long would these shops last just selling low profit items and not selling/no one buying the higher value and higher profit items that subsidise them?

WildFlowerBees · 30/05/2022 14:09

But we aren't celebrating the family we are celebrating an elderly woman who has given majority of her life to serving others. It's her jubilee not the families. Even she's picking and choosing what she goes to, I'm sure she's just as sick of the pomp and ceremony as we are. Stop making it about wealth it's not about how rich she is.

pastypirate · 30/05/2022 14:10

Yanbu. Mind you everywhere is a bit half arsed about it even the holiday park im on right now. There's a weird atmosphere about the whole thing. It's nothing like the olympics in 2012

TroysMammy · 30/05/2022 14:10

YANBU. To me it's nothing else but a week off work using only one day annual leave.

Blossomtoes · 30/05/2022 14:10

And I don’t think it’s a massive historical event

Seriously? It’s never happened before in over 1,000 years and it’s highly unlikely that it will ever happen again. I’d love to see your definition of a massive historical event.

RagingWoke · 30/05/2022 14:11

I don't get the argument that the queen 'deserves' the celebration for her sacrifices... whatever she's done, she's still had a life of unimaginable privilege and wealth and we are expected again to spend money on a jubilee at a time when cost of living is putting more and more into poverty while the royal family carry on unaffected while preaching to us about climate change and mental health.

Why can't some of the money be used to do something to actually help the subjects our queen supposedly cares about? Fuel, energy, food, healthcare- there are so many uses for the millions being pissed up the wall.

I'm with you OP, it just doesn't sit well with me. NHS hospitals are setting up food banks for STAFF who can't afford to live on their pay, people are dying because they can't access healthcare or pay for food or heat. The RF aren't coming off well recently.

CathyorClaire · 30/05/2022 14:11

I have seen figures showing that the royal family bring in more revenue in terms of tourists, etc than they actually cost

Cough 'em up then.

All I've ever seen hails from unverifiable sources who may or may not have their own agenda.

Eh ? There have been 3 Jubilees in my own lifetime and two in my kids, including this one.

Pyewhacket · 30/05/2022 14:12

Well you're perfectly free to say at home and mope around with a face like a slapped arse but we have arranged a street party for the kids down our road with a local brass band to play some jolly tunes.

After 2 years working in full PPE on a ICU covid red zone I'm looking forward to celebrating something we all join in and enjoy - down our road anyway.

If you object so strongly then ignore this bank holiday nonsense and go back to work.

SemperIdem · 30/05/2022 14:13

Yanbu.

I was quite pleased my daughters school ignored it rather than decreeing the children bring in food etc for picnics which for many will be an unnecessary expense.

I suspect that was down to it being a school staffed by Indy Wales supporters.
