To be annoyed about the Jubilee

I know I’m being miserable but I’m bloody pissed off about the sodding Jubilee! I went to sainsburys this morning, paid £1.68 a litre for petrol and then popped in to be confronted by bottles of champagne! The last thing I feel like doing is celebrating! I spent all morning cancelling non-essential DDs as things are really tight with the rise in energy prices and the increased NI contribution.
funny how this ‘magic money tree’ can be harvested to pay for this event when people are genuinely struggling and are told to ‘get a better paid job’! I have a bloody well paid job, thankyou, but am still feeling the pinch. I know people are going to say that the economy will benefit - but how? If people spend more then inflation will rise and the BOE will put up the mortgage rates! I despair!

YANBU, with any luck this will be the British monarchy's "let them eat cake" moment and we'll finally get ride of them.

fyn · 30/05/2022 13:47

@TheKeatingFive the Crown Estates are hereditary possessions of the Sovereign, they belong to the Crown. They aren’t owned personally by the Queen, nor are the owned by the Treasury. Each monarch agrees to give up the income to the Treasury in return for the Sovereign Grant.

ICanSmellSummerComing · 30/05/2022 13:47

I'm not a wild fan of the Queen.
I find her quite cold.
I'm appalled by her public standing by Andrew. Appalled.

However I must admit, watching the crown 👑 program and seeing how much she went through at various stages, I do admire her a little more.

For me the jubilee is more about the historical figure head.
I adore the history of it all and we won't see a queen on the throne for a very very long time so from that perspective I'm excited.

It will be a momentous time when she dies... momentous!

As for the royals zi hope William and Charlie's massively reduce them , for their own sakes, low key royals able to mix freely.

I think it's an amazing accomplishment. 70 years of never be able to be totally herself, I wouldn't have traded my life for hers.

You don't need to spend money to celebrate. Will be going to town to watch whatever celebration it offers. I won't be drinking champagne but will still get in the spirit no penny poorer.

What! Of course she could be herself. She does not "work" 24/7. She does have a private life, away from the public glare.

PurpleandPlatinum · 30/05/2022 13:48

The rubbish economy is due to the Conservatives.
The Monarchy help the economy and mean we pay less tax.
Call it rubbish if you like but it’s true. Direct your anger towards lying Boris Johnson, who probably just wanted more parties and more champagne.

TheKeatingFive · 30/05/2022 13:49

they belong to the Crown

They belong to a legal entity entitled 'the Crown' for the express purpose of running the offices of state. Spending 40 million of it on running a few barely inhabited palaces is a ridiculous use of them.

j712adrian · 30/05/2022 13:50

Jubilee? Bag o'shite.

The chance of me arriving on Saturday morning without having signed up to an obscure Euro-Communist Party is nil.

TheKeatingFive · 30/05/2022 13:51

😂

well there's a fool born every minute.

The PR people absolutely love people like you.

Don't be silly. I'm not wishing an unpleasant day on everyone else in the country. Just those foolish enough to celebrate the monarchy.

I’m with @GreenFingersWouldBeHandy , it’s particularly bad tempered to wish bad things to spoil others happiness because it’s something relatively innocuous you disagree with. It’s very easy not to be drawn into.

@thegreenlight I completely get where you’re coming from but don’t fall into the trap of letting the bad things cloud everything. Making the most of opportunities for be cheerful or celebrate is good for the soul and that’s part of what strengthens resilience.

You don’t need champagne or bunting to take the opportunity to just enjoy an extra bank holiday or witness a historical moment (if that’s your thing). If this had taken place three years ago would you have been up for joining in the celebrations or would it always have struck a chord with you making it something you had a problem with?

If you’re struggling to find any moments to look forward to or any enjoyment in life I would consider whether your surface feelings run deeper than more than a general malaise and anxiety about finances.

BracedlnEndIessJanuary · 30/05/2022 13:51

It's for a 96 year old who has been in public service for 70 years

This.
No fucks to give about Charlie Tampon (anyone's sane reaction to that should only be ewwww), noncey Andrew, or any of the rest of the motley crew but Crown is worth a picnic. Her face when Helen Mirren did her Liz the first schtick summed up what every other beggar was thinking!

RewildingAmbridge · 30/05/2022 13:52

We're not spending anything on bunting etc but our town is holding lots of free events for anyone to enjoy and not things that cost the council much either, things like local bands playing in the park, a children's art trail led by local schools and youth groups and we will see the fly past go over. It is what it is we live in a kingdom so have a monarchy, 70 years is a long time, a few scones and pots of tea aren't going to break the bank

The sitting monarch doesn't have a choice in the matter. They are not allowed to sell any of the crown estate, nor do any of its revenue belong to them.

If the monarchy was disbanded the crown estate would go on as normal except we'd no longer have to provide any funding for the Royal family from it's revenues.

MintyMoocow · 30/05/2022 13:53

Well I don’t think I’m a fool and I’m not that much of a royalist but I have seen figures showing that the royal family bring in more revenue in terms of tourists, etc than they actually cost.

Beautiful3 · 30/05/2022 13:53

I'm ignoring it. I'm not going to celebrate the Queen and her family living very privileged lives, while the rest of us struggle.

TheKeatingFive · 30/05/2022 13:53

Quite

BracedlnEndIessJanuary · 30/05/2022 13:54

I do NOT want it to piss down all weekend - two local picnics with free entertainment is more than our kids usually get to do round here, ta.

Who knows, we might be able to afford to educate people to use apostrophes correctly. That would be a win.

icelolly12 · 30/05/2022 13:55

Not a monarchist, nor much of a patriot. However, I'll never complain about a paid extra day off work!

Strawberriesaregreat · 30/05/2022 13:56

I'm with you OP. Can't wait till it's over. Sickmof seeing it on tv already and will be the same for a few days yet obviously. Why celebrate 70 years of taxpayers money keeping someone? She herself doesn't attract tourists-who actually gets to see the Queen or any royalty when they visit? For the museums and architecture, historical interest yes but the royals? Nah.

Idontgiveashitanymore · 30/05/2022 13:57

I’m not celebrating either. Everyone Can fuck off now.

Brefugee · 30/05/2022 13:57

I'm a republican and i don't live in the UK but anyway (I am British if that helps?)

I quite like the idea of a bit of a street party or a picnic in the park - i think that some neighbourhoods really got together to be supportive during the lockdowns and it is a shame that things seem to be getting back to insularity, so i hope this brings back some of that togetherness, especially for people who live alone, or don't have many friends etc. Just a day when the children can run around and everyone can sit on a slightly damp field and chomp on an egg & cress sandwich, a droopy sausage roll and drink slightly warm pop/beer from a paper cup. It sounds quite fun, actually. I love bunting (not sure about the Union Jack stuff, but generally bunting is jolly) so all the little pennants flapping in the wind usually makes people smile.

But: extra bank holiday? if you work in an industry that works harder on holidays (chefs, caterers, etc) then it's no holiday and any amount of TOIL doesn't give your kids the day off when you have it. Shiftworkers? do you benefit from 2 extra days off? So basically, it's a 9-5ers holiday/celebration and everyone else gets to carry on as normal and gets to watch everyone else having extra fun. Which is a bit rubbish really.

But. Hopefully this is the monarchy's last "hurrah" and when her Maj pops off, hopefully not before August [for selfish reasons], her very own PFB will be the king that presides over the country becoming a republic. And please no tiresome, lack of creative thinking, cries of "but who wants president Blair/Johnson/Rees-Mogg?!" There are other people who could be a non-exec head of state. Ian MacMillan? Floella Benjamin? Tanni Grey Thompson? Professor Brian Cox? Mary Beard?

In short: have fun if you're joining in, enjoy the days off if you get them and for anyone who is working, i hope you at least get time and a half and a day off in lieu.

Antarcticant · 30/05/2022 13:57

CreamyBruley · 30/05/2022 13:06

Same - I cannot understand why we are celebrating the jubilee of such an awful woman tbh.

I keep seeing a poster for a party at my local park and I'm just praying it absolutely pisses it down all day.

Fair enough you're not interested but it's rather mean-spirited to hope the party is spoiled.

There are lots of similar free events where I live - and, OK, they might not be wildly exciting - Fire Station open day, 1940s vintage market, local bands, art exhibition as a few examples - if you have no money for exciting day trips or a weekend break over the bank holiday weekend - stuff like this at least gives you an opportunity to get out of the house and do something different.

TheKeatingFive · 30/05/2022 13:57

but I have seen figures showing that the royal family bring in more revenue in terms of tourists

Nothing like this can ever be actually quantified, it's all ridiculous speculation/puff pieces. France got rid of their pointless and expensive monarchy centuries ago and Versailles is more visited than any U.K. palace.

In the meantime, if we got rid of them we'd be quids in on the sovereign grant, the duchies and the direct cost to the tax payer in security, to the tune of more than 100 million a year.

AnnHedonia · 30/05/2022 13:58

cigarettesNalcohol · 30/05/2022 13:13

But some people can afford to celebrate so YABU

How insensitive.

ArtVandalay · 30/05/2022 13:59

I think the obscene amount of money being spent on it is ill-judged when the country is in a pretty parlous state and so many are feeling the pinch.

I don’t get people bring fans of the royals but I accept lots are. I think it will be the last huge royal celebration as the tide is definitely turning against un-elected heads of state and their unearned privileges.
