To be annoyed about the Jubilee

thegreenlight · 30/05/2022 12:34

I know I’m being miserable but I’m bloody pissed off about the sodding Jubilee! I went to sainsburys this morning, paid £1.68 a litre for petrol and then popped in to be confronted by bottles of champagne! The last thing I feel like doing is celebrating! I spent all morning cancelling non-essential DDs as things are really tight with the rise in energy prices and the increased NI contribution.
funny how this ‘magic money tree’ can be harvested to pay for this event when people are genuinely struggling and are told to ‘get a better paid job’! I have a bloody well paid job, thankyou, but am still feeling the pinch. I know people are going to say that the economy will benefit - but how? If people spend more then inflation will rise and the BOE will put up the mortgage rates! I despair!

My dementia-stricken grandmother is absolutely loving the bunting and music and dancing and tea parties bringing back memories. Take your misery and stick it up your arse!

StridTheKiller · 30/05/2022 17:07

YANBU. It is incredibly crass and out of touch. Makes me despise the royals all the more, and all the snivelling sycophants as well.

Hoppinggreen · 30/05/2022 17:10

I’m treating it like Christmas.
Don’t really care what it’s all about but it’s an extra couple of days off work to spend eating and drinking and seeing friends

StridTheKiller · 30/05/2022 17:10

The only people I've heard of who give a damn about the jubilee celebrations are the ancient senile or utter piss heads who use any opportunity to get wasted.

yesthatisdrizzle · 30/05/2022 17:12

There is literally no other country in the world where its citizens are less patriotic than we are.

I find it unfathomable.

Antarcticant · 30/05/2022 17:13

I know plenty of perfectly ordinary people of all ages who are looking forward to it.

User487216 · 30/05/2022 17:15

Is no different to Christmas, some splash out, some can't afford to.

derxa · 30/05/2022 17:16

The royalists really are just celebrating their servitude like happy little sheep You obviously know nothing about sheep

Mamamia7962 · 30/05/2022 17:21

There's some miserable people on this thread. On Thursday my village is holding an afternoon tea event in the village hall. I volunteer for a charity for elderly people and have offered along with others to give lifts to the elderly so they can attend this event. Some of those I am taking don't have any family so they will have an enjoyable afternoon getting together with others and it won't cost them a penny.

Some people on here need to look at the bigger picture. Whatever people's views are of the Royal Family it is an historical event, one which will be talked about for many years. It is about making happy memories for both children and adults.

If you don't want to take part then no one's forcing you to but don't begrudge others the chance to enjoy themselves.

She doesn’t like luxury and prefers the simpler things in life, which I think makes her an inspiration. She teaches us all what is important in life. Her former chef did something which you can access via YouTube showing what he cooked for her. She also likes 7 sides to a potato and "has to have" corners cut off her sandwiches because centuries ago they thought leaving "sharp" corners on the sandwiches was akin to treason. Simple my arse 😂

the privilege can be destructive (Andrew, Harry). privilege didn't make Andrew a paedo, he did that all by himself.

You have a point if it's true about the potatoes, but cutting the corners off a sandwich is hardly a complex culinary feat.

Goodness I'm not a Royalist but does being a Republican require such rudeness?

Even if you can't bear the thought of calling her HRH or Her Majesty or the Queen, at least do her the courtesy of using her name. You can call her "Elizabeth Windsor"

"Old Liz" makes you sound ignorant and rude.

I'm in Scotland & there seems to be little fuss here so far, no parties planned.
Kids in School on Thurs and next Monday too (our School took it's random 'floating' holiday last week!)

It's interesting from a historical perspective.
If we DO keep the Monarchy (& I'd be happy to dispense of it now, after the revelations of the last 30 years) then it should become a jointly held affair with William & Harry each doing the appearances that they are best at & sharing it.

I’m old enough to remember the Coronation. I’m Scottish, only came South in my 20s. I remember the bunting, the flags, (including the Saltire) the street parties, and I was so envious of a school friend who had a miniature coronation coach! I was at a school Jubilee picnic recently, the children enjoyed it, they were all sporting red, white and blue in various combinations.

I’m no ardent royalist, but I have respect for the Queen, and for the history of the UK.

CoffeeWithCheese · 30/05/2022 17:36

I'm not planning on celebrating it - I'm an ardent republican to the point I'll stand silently while others sing the national anthem but I won't sing it myself.

It might be bringing some communities together but it's isolating a lot of others - I'm dreading it because there's one group in our street who will be having a party in our next door neighbour's garden right under our bedroom window, we won't be invited (which is fine) but it'll go on all night if the royal wedding one was anything to go by (he was still BBQing in a Union Jack top hat and his boxers at 5am the following morning) and I'm a bigger fan of my sleep than any monarchy.

CockingASnook · 30/05/2022 15:24

I still can't get my head around why we curtsey / tug our forelocks to a random and extremely wealthy German family who were simply better at war and strategic marriage than other extremely wealthy families. It's pathetic. Plus it means I have to do five days' work in three.

The Queen Mother was Scottish.

Persianflufffluff · 30/05/2022 15:20

Some of us still have to work so its not a holiday for everyone. In Scotland too, schools in on the Thursday

Well that's probably the SNP making a point. I'm in Scotland- my office is closed Thursday and Friday.

You are joking right? We’re the most jingoistic nation on earth. The whole country currently resembles a BNP rally.

hollyivysaurus · 30/05/2022 17:41

I think it definitely strikes the wrong tone at a time when things are so bad and ordinary people are struggling. Personally I’d ignore it if it wasn’t for my kids - they have enjoyed dressing up and picnics at school so I’ve bought them a couple of wee flags, we’ll watch the parade on Sunday and have a picnic lunch, I’ve promised to make some sort of meringue based concoction for the occasion!

I suspect this or the next will be the last jubilee we’ll celebrate as I genuinely think when Charles becomes King the calls for a republic will grow stronger and I could see a referendum etc happening. So I’m trying to view it as a ‘it will be something to tell my grandchildren’ type event!

This is exactly. Can't believe how many Scrooges there are on here. I presume that all the people who don't believe in Jesus also refuse to celebrate at Christmas?

Lolojojonesi · 30/05/2022 17:43

YANBU. I'm in Scotland and don't know anyone who is celebrating around where I live. Ridiculous that we have a monarchy, and this celebration just serves to prop up our corrupt and incompetent government

Porcupineintherough · 30/05/2022 17:43

In what way are they a German family @CockingASnook? If generations of being born here isnt enough to make one British, what is?

BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation · 30/05/2022 17:46

I don't like the way she's been parading her son around - the one who sexually exploited trafficked girls. It's sickening. He's her favourite as well apparently. That's a dysfunctional way to raise your children. And look what sort of a person he's grown up into.
