To be annoyed about the Jubilee

thegreenlight · 30/05/2022 12:34

I know I’m being miserable but I’m bloody pissed off about the sodding Jubilee! I went to sainsburys this morning, paid £1.68 a litre for petrol and then popped in to be confronted by bottles of champagne! The last thing I feel like doing is celebrating! I spent all morning cancelling non-essential DDs as things are really tight with the rise in energy prices and the increased NI contribution.
funny how this ‘magic money tree’ can be harvested to pay for this event when people are genuinely struggling and are told to ‘get a better paid job’! I have a bloody well paid job, thankyou, but am still feeling the pinch. I know people are going to say that the economy will benefit - but how? If people spend more then inflation will rise and the BOE will put up the mortgage rates! I despair!

I presume that all the people who don't believe in Jesus also refuse to celebrate at Christmas?

I know barely anyone that celebrates Christmas as a religious festival. Ditto Easter. Both are generally thought of as a time for gatherings, gifts, chocolate and time off work/school without the Jesus bit. I don't even know the significance (if there is one) of the other bank holidays.

YANBU. I'm in Scotland and don't know anyone who is celebrating around where I live. Ridiculous that we have a monarchy, and this celebration just serves to prop up our corrupt and incompetent government

You've lost me there. How do the Jubilee celebrations help to prop up Sturgeon's corrupt and incompetent government?

Antarcticant · 30/05/2022 17:49

I suspect this or the next will be the last jubilee we’ll celebrate as I genuinely think when Charles becomes King the calls for a republic

I think it will be the last for some while simply by virtue of logistics. The Queen is statistically unlikely to live to 106 to celebrate another. Prince Charles is 73 already. Even if he were to hit the throne next year, he'd have to live to 99/100 to reach his Silver Jubilee.

If he falls short of that we've got whatever the duration of his reign is, plus 25 before William's first jubilee will be due. It could easily be 20 years before William hits the throne so if Charles doesn't make it to Silver, we are looking at 40-50 years before the next Silver Jubilee will come round. My hypothetical timescale would put William pushing 80 by then, so he might get a Golden Jubilee if he's lucky. But I'll be long dead by then!

In what way are they a German family @CockingASnook? If generations of being born here isnt enough to make one British, what is?

The Queen is half Scottish.

Bonjovispjs · 30/05/2022 17:50

@TimBoothseyes We didn't celebrate it on February 6th because that's when her dad died!

JemimaPuddlegoose · 30/05/2022 17:51

It would be perfectly easy to celebrate the Jubilee, give people a long weekend, and find ways to respectfully honour the Queen, without splunking an utterly obscene amount of money from the magic money tree that apparently only appears when super wealthy people stick their hands out, and just as magically vanishes when terminally ill people are having their disability benefits taken away, and hospitals are being closed.

Obscene how much money this is costing us during such a severe cost of living crisis, when ordinary people's rights are being trampled on and Boris Johnson is essentially re-writing the law to make himself a dictator.

Why should my taxpayer money be spent throwing one of the richest women in the world a party?

The Queen has enough money to pay off rape victims, she can afford to finance her own party.

TurquoiseSwirl · 30/05/2022 17:51

PuppyMonkey · 30/05/2022 12:45

We’ll all get called killjoys I know, but watching all the gushing over this over privileged woman and her “service” to the nation, it baffles me. And as you say, the worry about the cost of living while this bunch of thickos live in their lavish palaces and we’re expected to celebrate their contribution? A visitor from a different planet would be looking at this going HmmConfused

Just wait a minute, they’ll be here in a minute… Oh but she brings in such a lot of tourists and their cash. Bollocks.

Ashamedly that used to be me, with the tourism and money bullshit. Now I’ve learnt and think they all should go. And Harry absolutely did the right thing in getting out. He was always going to be famous and need protection so why not own it and do your own thing and let your wife wear what she wants, no always no tights and coat dress bullshit

TheOriginalEmu · 30/05/2022 17:53

Winterhail · 30/05/2022 12:42

I'm not celebrating personally, but I do think that 70 years on the throne is pretty special, and it should be acknowledged.

It’s pretty easy to live that long when you have access to the best of everything money can buy. My mum died last year at 69 because she lived in poverty, couldn’t afford private health care, her cancer was ignored for months and so she was stage 4 by the time it was found, then she caught covid and despite her illness was left to manage at home with us desperately trying to get her seen. She died. When Prince Charles had covid he was in hospital ‘as a precaution’.
my mum worked every day of her life from 15, sometimes two jobs, was still working when covid hit. If she’d recieved the kind of care they do, she might well still be alive.
so, no, not something to celebrate.

You're not being unreasonable. Thankfully I'm in a part of Wales where no one gives a monkeys about the jubilee.

Same

Its the urdd this weekend which is 100 years old this year, im so much more interested in celebrating/attending that!

Highfivemum · 30/05/2022 17:56

Every week I go in a supermarket and see stuff I cannot afford to buy. You don’t have to buy the Champagne! YABU. This is an even that has never happened and unlikely to happening again. Whether you choose to celebrate it is up to you but if you are British and live in the UK then why not. ! Even if not a royalist surely we all need a bank holiday and a get together. Enjoy it without the expense.

I think you’re being unreasonable. Supermarkets could easily mask all the products with curtains or sell everything in plain unmarked boxes or cartons, or immediately remove from sale anything that costs over a quid.

Maroon85 · 30/05/2022 18:00

I find it all depressing personally. It's just another 2 days where both DH and I have to do a ridiculous amount of work, but this time without any childcare as that is shut.
Not everyone gets the time off

FoiledByTheInsect · 30/05/2022 18:03

Old Liz makes you sound ignorant and rude

HRH makes you sound like Baldrick 🤷‍♀️

MaulPerton · 30/05/2022 18:06

I agree with much of what you say but this part:

And Harry absolutely did the right thing in getting out. He was always going to be famous and need protection so why not own it and do your own thing and let your wife wear what she wants, no always no tights and coat dress bullshit

is incorrect. Harry and his children will always be viewed as 'one of their own' and so we may find that we are, in fact, still 'contributing' to the independent Harry and wife, in the same way that we contribute to the lives of Zara, Peter, the York daughters, various cousins and other minor but long-living adjacents.

surreygirl1987 · 30/05/2022 18:08

I don't like monarchy but I'm going to be joining the celebrations as it's nice to have everyone together for parties. It's been a really bleak time and a party is something nice to look forward to. I understand people's point about money - we are feeling the pinch too - but a picnic in a park doesn't have to cost any more than eating lunch at home.

How do come to that conclusion? I didn't say what title I would use. I merely listed the options available.

However I hope I'm never so ignorant and rude that I'll refer to anyone as "Old Liz".

The Morning Star used to (possibly still does, I don't know, haven't seen a copy in a long time) refer to members of the Royal Family as "First Name and surname"

Tbh I’d expect a royalist to know that Old Liz isn’t HRH but HM.

Antarcticant · 30/05/2022 18:23

In his memoir of royal service, Paul Burrell tells the story of riding behind the Queen on her open carriage, and the Queen being amused by a loud cockney voice shouting 'Giz a wave, Liz' - and then doing a perfect impersonation of it for another Royal who'd missed it and wondered why she was laughing.

goodbyestranger · 30/05/2022 18:23

Cornettoninja I think that you think that you're responding to the question of what exactly is the historical significance of this anniversary but you're not. You're telling me why people fancy a party. That's very different.

I'm hoping that the anniversary will be seen as significant in future years however, as showing very visibly just how little favour this institution in general and the family in particular have amongst the young. I myself don't think it has any more significance prospectively than, say, some random pie eating event which makes the Guinness Book of Records.

Guess you missed the bit where I said I'm not a Royalist.

As I said I hope I'm never ignorant and rude enough to call anyone "Old Liz".

User487216 · 30/05/2022 18:26

Not bothered about the jubilee but will be treating myself to some of the nice food in the shops as DH is away at the weekend so I can stuff my face in front of a good box set

KimikosNightmare · 30/05/2022 18:28

This thread reminds me of many Brexit threads. I was and still am a Remainer but there are some boody awful, ignorant, rude and self- satisfied Remainers.

I'm not a Royalist but my goodness there are some boody awful, ignorant, rude and self- satisfied anti- Royalists.
