To be annoyed about the Jubilee

thegreenlight · 30/05/2022 12:34

I know I’m being miserable but I’m bloody pissed off about the sodding Jubilee! I went to sainsburys this morning, paid £1.68 a litre for petrol and then popped in to be confronted by bottles of champagne! The last thing I feel like doing is celebrating! I spent all morning cancelling non-essential DDs as things are really tight with the rise in energy prices and the increased NI contribution.
funny how this ‘magic money tree’ can be harvested to pay for this event when people are genuinely struggling and are told to ‘get a better paid job’! I have a bloody well paid job, thankyou, but am still feeling the pinch. I know people are going to say that the economy will benefit - but how? If people spend more then inflation will rise and the BOE will put up the mortgage rates! I despair!

That wrong on both scores Blossomtoes.

Explain the significance of the anniversary, if you can. Instruct me.

I have explained it. However much I explain it, I can’t understand it for you so let’s just drop it, shall we?

We have a monarchy. We have had a monarchy for centuries. The current monarch has been in service for the longest of any of our monarchs. It’s a continuation of a history that already exists and is being added to.

Significance of an anniversary is the same as any other societal celebration of any other anniversary. We like measuring things and place significance at certain points, it’s just what we do. People like celebrations and they serve a positive function in communities and wider society. If we don’t have a reason to celebrate we invent one. Humans have been doing this since before civilisation.

how deep do you want to go?

goodbyestranger · 30/05/2022 16:17

how deep do you want to go?

Well certainly rather deeper than that.

Fifi0102 · 30/05/2022 16:20

I'm on holiday this week it is an important historic event but hopefully the monarchy will be over within my life time I don't think anyone could top her reign anyway . It's an outdated concept in 2022 nobody is better than someone else by accident of birth. .

Well then I think you may need to do your own research into why humans celebrate. There’s plenty on the subject.

it’s perfectly valid to not want to celebrate something you disagree with but to claim faux ignorance about not understanding why anyone else would is basically asking a lot of people to believe you’re not very bright. I understand lots of things I don’t subscribe to or even like.

greatblueheron · 30/05/2022 16:25

'Service to the nation' my arse.

They're worth millions and millions of pounds, and continue to take from the taxpayers.

I'd be happy to 'serve the nation' for a heck of a lot less, frankly, and I'm sure many others would as well.

Frankly insulting they still exist on the taxpayer expense list at this point, especially with the disgraceful leech Andrew still trying to milk the taxpayers.

medianewbie · 30/05/2022 16:26

I'm in Scotland & there seems to be little fuss here so far, no parties planned.
Kids in School on Thurs and next Monday too (our School took it's random 'floating' holiday last week!)

It's interesting from a historical perspective.
If we DO keep the Monarchy (& I'd be happy to dispense of it now, after the revelations of the last 30 years) then it should become a jointly held affair with William & Harry each doing the appearances that they are best at & sharing it.

FoiledByTheInsect · 30/05/2022 16:26

Far be it from me to agree with any royalist but this weekend's pantomime really is historically significant. Although we won't realise until long after the cringefest itself.

It has all the 4 criteria that makes an event significant: Novelty (she's scammed us for longer than any other royal this century); Applicability to modern times (corruption, opaque power structures and shady dealings being exposed globally); Memory (JS, JE, Prince Philip's unforgettable racism etc etc etc) and Effects (people starting to ask questions, such crass bad taste in the current climate that it might just spell the beginning of the end).

It won't be forgotten in either camp, that's for sure.

musicviking1 · 30/05/2022 16:27

I'm ignoring it

I dunno. It's for a 96 year old who has been in public service for 70 years. If we can't let this be celebrated without moaning about it, we really are a miserable nation.

This.

We are a nation of complainers!

Manekinek0 · 30/05/2022 16:31

I'm not a fan of the royal family and all the local free events are focused on younger families. So I will be working but I honestly couldn't get upset or angry over any of it.

What if the cost of living keeps on increasing? The price cap is going up again in October and global food production is worrying. Should the supermarkets hide the smoked salmon and champagne? Should we cancel Christmas?

grapewines · 30/05/2022 16:31

BlueGlassOfDoom · 30/05/2022 12:45

YANBU - it’s just Bread & Circuses.

This is how I would feel. I'm very glad the royals here are much more subdued.

YANBU, OP.

In which case perhaps Sunak should be doing his job for nothing, given that his worth is more than double the Queen’s.

Hesma · 30/05/2022 16:32

Bah humbug you miserable sod!

Diverseopinions · 30/05/2022 16:39

Somebody told me the next street to them is having a party and people will bring their own food. Simple ...easy. I can't really see the problem. The councils will put on some events to entertain the children which families won't have to pay for. Not a major insult to struggling families.

I blame Boris Johnson for the economy. It will get worse because of Brexit and because the Tories aren't doing enough to redistribute from big business, and because I think Johnson is incompetent.

Rosebel · 30/05/2022 16:47

I'm ignoring it as much as possible. We're struggling at the moment.
No money, my mental health is shot to pieces and I'm fed up of funding all the hangers on. I lost a lot of respect for the Queen after what happened with Andrew.
I don't really see why we should celebrate her reign. What decisions has she made to help us? Nothing as far as I can see.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 30/05/2022 16:51

Royalists are so cringe.

So are people who are so miserable they begrudge others having any fun.

LuluBlakey1 · 30/05/2022 16:53

What it costs the government will not equate to the money given to a couple of their cronies for supplying useless PPE that was chucked away into landfill. If you want to get annoyed get annoyed at the government:
For all the Brexit lies
For the hundreds of billions of £££s they have given to their pals, straight from public money for absolutely sweet fanny adams.
For the fact that since 2010, there are more children in food poverty in this country than any other country in Western Europe.
For handing millionaires £400 cash each to pay their fuel bills.
For refusing to intervene in the mess they have made of the economy- which has seen- bankers bonuses at their highest in 12 years, oil, gas and electricity profits at their highest ever.
Huge companies like Royal Mail making 750 million in profit in the last year and still increasing prices by 12% last month

What is happening in the high price, low wage economy is theft from ordinary people by this government and their corporate cronies- whose interests are the only interests the government cares about. None of what is happening to us needs to happen- the government want it to.It is profiteering at our expense to line the pockets of the already very rich.

Read this and never vote Tory ever.

Then maybe it would have been better to have it next year on the 70th anniversary of her coronation. As it is June 2nd-3rd is just random dates with no meaning.

Without wishing to be morbid, the Queen's health isn't getting any better. It makes sense to celebrate earlier rather than later, while she is still able to be a presence at some of the events.

PatAndFrank · 30/05/2022 16:56

But let's not give them the idea to do a Platinum Anniversary of the Coronation next year. I don't think I could cope. I think there has been so much talk about it for months that alot of people are just tired of the whole thing before it happens.

ancientgran · 30/05/2022 17:03

On second thoughts next year might be good, coincide with my 70th birthday so I could pretend it is all about me.

I think there will be TV retrospectives next year and possibly some kind of commemorative church service but I can't see it going further than that.

(Famous last words?)
