To not understand why the 'woman' question is so hard for politicians to answer?

Themidnightpig · 29/05/2022 15:14

Genuinely not sure if I'm missing something here.

Constantly seeing it in the news politicians being unable to answer or getting flustered over the 'do women have penises' question.

Surely the answer is as straight forward as 'No, women don't have penises but some Trans Women do and as a decent society we treat them as women in so far as possible'

Why is this so hard for everyone to grapple with?

Erm, the Strike books - the last of which reached number 1 in the chart, the next of which is due out in August and the series which is currently being televised?

Also, um, a little known franchise called Harry Potter which seems to still be doing pretty darn well!

The franchise that deleted her from their anniversary celebrations

TheKeatingFive · 29/05/2022 20:53

I would like to think people thought I was a kind person.

Me too. What I object to is when we're asked to deny biological fact to be 'kind'. Ultimately I value truth above that.

I notice you haven't responded to the questions you've been asked repeatedly.

Highlyquestionablehoumous · 29/05/2022 20:53

None of them condemned the disgusting abuse she was subjected to either.

How very 'kind' of them.

Penguintears · 29/05/2022 20:47

Why would your transwomen friends be hurt by JKR indirectly pointing out that only women menstruate? It's a biological fact. How is it hurtful?

Well, let's talk about my trans man friend, as you guys claim to care about biological women.

He has spent many horrible years coming to terms with his identity. He now identifies as a man and is one of the brightest, brilliant people I know.

The fact he has periods is a hard struggle for him.

JKR sat on Twitter and mocked the word 'women's based on something that causes him immense conflict

She also promoted badges which while factually correct, were spiteful.

TheKeatingFive · 29/05/2022 20:55

I find it fascinating that Rowling is being required to be 'kinder' while getting death threats from TRAs. Nothing kind about that.

Vikinga · 29/05/2022 20:57

Well I was born female and I identify as female. I know some trans people and I think of them as the sex they identify with. I'm shocked and disgusted at MN attitude towards trans women.

TheKeatingFive · 29/05/2022 20:57

Well that may be and I have sympathy but you can't hold Rowling responsible for biology and the clear and irrefutable differences between the sexes.

Please do some research before you make yourselves look even sillier than you already are.
there are a number of tw and activists claiming that they have actually changed sex.
India Willoughby is one of them.

if you do not believe in transwomen in female sports and prisons then you are trans exclusionary as you are excluding transwomen from spaces they wish to be in. You may not be a TERF as you are probably not a radical feminist but you cannot claim to be fully in support of the LGBTQIA+ when you don’t go along with what a large section of activists want.

You are not on the side you think you are on.

Highlyquestionablehoumous · 29/05/2022 20:58

Ah yes, the 2020 Yougov poll, where the last section is always missed out. The reason that it's missed out is that it clarifies that what is being talked about when referring to 'transwoman' is a male who hasn't had SRS has has fully intact genitalia. When this clarification is included, the results are very different.

SlightlyGeordieJohn · 29/05/2022 20:58

It’s not transphobic to say that trans women are men. That’s the whole point, they are men living “as” women (whatever that’s supposed to mean…)

Penguintears · 29/05/2022 21:00

Exactly. I think your friend's upset is clear displacement. The fact that having periods upsets your friend is not JKR's fault is it? Just as the fact that I struggle with extremely painful periods and endometriosis isn't her fault either. It doesn't change biological facts.

Are you reneging on your earlier assertion that your transwomen friends were hurt?

Yes it is.

And spot your flippancy at tbe end. That's tbe transphobia at play.

Do you believe people can change sex then?

No.

Same issue but backwards- the assertion that they're not women when they feel they are.

Thetes no point having this conversation because you're not interested in any views but your own. And that's fine. The divide will this continue.

RufustheFloralmissingreindeer · 29/05/2022 21:02

Will someone stand up at your funeral and say "she wrote lots of great things on the internet about trans rights?

if thats the best someone can say about me at my funeral then i have absolutely failed as a human being

minutesturntohours · 29/05/2022 21:00

Yes it is.

No, it isn't. It's a genuine failure to grasp what a male living as a woman could possibly entail.
Perhaps you could enlighten us? How does a biological male live as a woman?

SlightlyGeordieJohn · 29/05/2022 21:03

minutesturntohours · 29/05/2022 19:56

But what if woman physically do have penises? now what? Is it a figment of their imagination? (I'm referring to trans men who have had reconstruction, just interested to know where you stand on that).

That’s not a penis. You presumably know this, so why be disingenuous?

minutesturntohours · 29/05/2022 21:03

Penguintears · 29/05/2022 21:01

Do you believe people can change sex then?

I dont believe people can change sex but I do accept the sex they choose to be.

I dont believe in God but I accept that people do.

I dont think same sex people are attractive but I accept that others do.

Tbe thing that irritates me with 'gender critical' (egotistical term) is that people make it all about them. You dont object to trans, you object to what it means for you.

minutesturntohours · 29/05/2022 21:04

SlightlyGeordieJohn · 29/05/2022 21:03

It's not flippancy. What does it means to live as a woman? If my name is Sam, I am a lorry driver, I only ever wears jeans, hoodies and DM boots, I have sex with women, I have short hair and tattoos, I drink beer with my friends every evening and I have a deep voice. Am I living as a woman?

I dont understand it, because I'm comfortable with my gender.

I'm just not bloodu arrogant enough to put that on everyone else.

TheKeatingFive · 29/05/2022 21:05

I dont believe people can change sex but I do accept the sex they choose to be.

That's a contradiction though. If you don't think people can change sex then how can you accept a sex they 'choose' if it isn't their biological sex?

Johnnysgirl · 29/05/2022 21:05

I dont believe in God but I accept that people do
Presumably you wouldn't accept them forcing their beliefs on you?

'Whatever that's meant to mean,'

It means something to them.

Smileyaxolotl1 · 29/05/2022 21:05

MrsTerryPratchett

Yes I very much agree. There are a number of these types of transsexuals (and they call themselves that) on Twitter.
delightful people who are looking for solutions to real problems. Who are currently having to change in disabled toilets or not go swimming etc at all as Stonewall have wasted all their money forcing women to accept males in their spaces rather than fighting for third spaces.
they are being massively harmed by the TRAs are are repeatedly called TRUSCUM when they accept that they are not the sex they desire to be.
