Teacher ripped pages out of dd’s book and then was overheard talking about her

Dd (10) has been in tears since she came home today. They were doing a written piece of work and the teacher was wound up by a misbehaving child. Dd had crossed out a couple of words in her writing (neatly, using a ruler she said) but the teacher was angry that there was a crossing out in her work and ripped the page out in front of the whole class, threw it away and told her to do it again.

Shortly after dd had to get changed for PE and from the changing room overheard the teacher saying to the TA that dd had come up with ‘rubbish ideas’ in her work. Dd was crushed!

Im thinking of emailing the head to complain.

I would!

nasty bitch

So crushing for DD, but hopefully another teacher /HT will boost her confidence.

Orchidflower1 · 23/05/2022 20:18

I highly doubt that was the exact way it panned out. I’d comfort your daughter and move one

OnceuponaRainbow18 · 23/05/2022 20:18

I would speak to the teacher first, I doubt this is exactly what happened

Orchidflower1 · 23/05/2022 20:18

On not one - sorry stupid auto correct!

fallfallfall · 23/05/2022 20:18

it's been done before

Johnnysgirl · 23/05/2022 20:18

It's almost certainly not what happened.

orwellwasright · 23/05/2022 20:19

Hmm. How about chatting to her class teacher explaining how upset your daughter felt before complaining to the head?

You don't actually know what happened. Not really. Kids can be fanciful, particularly when they feel indignant.

iex · 23/05/2022 20:21

Did your dd tell you this??

Rogue1001MNer · 23/05/2022 20:24

And the first post of that link says it's been done before too @fallfallfall

shiningstar2 · 23/05/2022 20:25

Why the Head first? He/she wasn't there. Why not speak to the teacher first and find out what happened from her perspective. You need both perspectives to find out what actually happened. Going to the Head first, over the teacher's head could seem as though you are intent on making a complaint against the teacher rather than resolving the issue. It could seem that way to the Head not just the teacher which doesn't help you or your daughter. Speak to the teacher first

Kidsaregrim · 23/05/2022 20:28

Oh my goodness, you know your child. So much damage has been don over the years from adults not listening to the voice of a child. I think mumsnet have some right old fibbers as offspring, whenever there is a post like this people jump on to say that never happened - they were not there!

it would not hurt to call the teacher and explain your DD made you aware of an incident and would she mind giving you her account, at least that way you could satisfy the vipers on here that you absolutely believe nothing your child says! 🙄

And please carry on listening and standing up for your daughter and showing her she can trust you

ElCoh · 23/05/2022 20:34

Hahahahaaha as if this happened 😆

Yep.

Manekinek0 · 23/05/2022 20:44

I did have a teacher who was very nasty and did once ripped my work up. No one listened and I ran away from school aged 7 because of his behaviour. Your DD may have misheard but I would have a face to face meeting with the teacher and try to resolve this.

SpaceFarce · 23/05/2022 20:45

I remember telling my parents bullshit like this too 🙃

DogsAndGin · 23/05/2022 20:47

Yes a teacher would rip pages out of a book - if it was their ‘final book/gold book/best book’. In fact, we had an inspector once said they expected ‘best work’ to be ripped out if it wasn’t good enough. The teacher is under pressure to get the children to produce ‘expected standard’ work, and it might seem harsh to rip pages out, but if that’s what they’ve been trained to do 🤷🏼‍♀️

She was then overhead having a private conversation where she is clearly frustrated that the child can’t come up with new ideas. I don’t know the extent of this problem. But, I have some children who write about wrestlers/footballers in every single piece of work. I can’t award them expected standard for that, even if it is well written, as they need to demonstrate a range of different pieces.

It is frustrating, and yes, she should have taken better care to not be heard speaking so frankly. I’m sure the teacher would be mortified if you told her - and I think you should tell her that DD heard, so that she can explain to your DD how she can generate better ideas and make her work more interesting before the academic year is over. Surely she’s only got a couple more pieces to go, so the pressure is really on now for the teacher and pupil to achieve expected standard. The teacher has high standards - if she didn’t care, and had given up on your DD’s writing, she wouldn’t have bothered ripping out the work or talking about her frustrations with the TA. Try and make a positive out of this OP.

GirlCrushxxx · 23/05/2022 20:48

Doubt it happened like that

user1471462428 · 23/05/2022 20:57

My daughters confidence was shattered by something similar happening at school, it transpired that the teacher targeted working class/ethnic minority children as she thought their parents wouldn’t complain. We complained but the school never did anything about it. We moved our daughter but I still hear stories about her now.
Loads of cuddles and reassurance at home for you op and talk to school to what the teacher says

Childbeinganiggtmare · 23/05/2022 20:57

I used to work with a teacher that did this, I’m only talking 5 years ago. He would rip out pages he wasn’t happy with and would only give the cover (whoever it was) sheets of paper. Abhorrent.

StripytopandJordans · 23/05/2022 20:58

Dd doesn’t have form for exaggerating or making stuff up. She actually asked me to complain about what happened! I’m surprised so many people are saying it’s bullshit

And you know this...how?

Thatswhyimacat · 23/05/2022 21:02

I love how mumsnet always jumps on to say how it's impossible a teacher would rip a book out of work, when at my school we had a teacher who literally picked up a table and threw it at us.

This, 100%

Thatswhyimacat · 23/05/2022 21:04

Oh I remember a supply teacher as well who ripped up the homework of every student in the room who had printed off less research than the students with the top 5 pages in the class.
