To not cater for this

I'm cooking for 10 tonight. 5 couples, in the group there is someone who has a nut allergy and someone who has cealiocs (I've never figured the spelling) one of the pairs have just called to say that they are doing vegan weekends to reduce their carbon impact.... They are just checking that somethung tonight will be suitable... I've said it wont but that they are more than welcome to bring stuff. ... Am I being an unreasonable arse?

Their reasoning makes no sense if they’re going out for a meal. Presumably you’ve already bought the stuff - it’s a sunk cost in terms of carbon - so getting more stuff would only increase their carbon impact?

Damn good point!

I didn’t think you could be a part time vegan? It’s a whole lifestyle, not just what you eat but shoes and clothes etc. plant based diet part time- yes. Part time vegan no. The whole vegan ethos is why I could not be a vegan. I couldn’t give up my leather shoes and woolly jumpers. That aside I don’t think you are BU.

I'd guess that was a joke text to be honest and you are just too stressed to realise.

Do you never have beans on toast or with baked potatoes?

Porridge or toast? Tomato soup and bread?

Falafels, hummus, pittas and salad?

All vegan and at the same time normal foods that many people eat regularly as a matter of course without being intentionally vegan.

You can't give toast or pitta bread to a guest with coeliac disease though. OP can't cater for part time vegans while also catering for people with genuine dietary requirements.

MadMadaMim · 24/05/2022 17:08

Contacting you on the day to give dietary requirements is extremely rude. And, dare I say, entitled, regardless of the reason for the requirements.

I'd say at least 3-7 days notice is required.

And not turning up is even worse. If they were my friends, I'd have to speak with them about it. Unacceptable.

@DoorWasAJar we're not exactly animals in the sense that we have the ability to choose what we eat, making decisions based on ethics is a privilege not shared with "animals". We have become progressive (well most of us at least). And we have choices.
I choose to be vegan & have done since I can remember, don't judge!
