I'm cooking for 10 tonight. 5 couples, in the group there is someone who has a nut allergy and someone who has cealiocs (I've never figured the spelling) one of the pairs have just called to say that they are doing vegan weekends to reduce their carbon impact.... They are just checking that somethung tonight will be suitable... I've said it wont but that they are more than welcome to bring stuff. ... Am I being an unreasonable arse?

🤣🤣🤣🤣

Strangeways19 · 22/05/2022 18:19

I'd do it all vegan to lessen the carbon footprint anyway, celiac is serious also but you can easily ensure flour isn't wheat & incorporate this into a vegan meal.

Oysterbabe · 21/05/2022 12:58

If they were actual vegans then fine. Weekend vegans? They can get to fuck.

This ^ 🙌

Alcibiade · 22/05/2022 18:21

Tell them that they can reduce their carbon impact further by saving petrol and having dinner at home instead...

LoisLane66 · 22/05/2022 18:22

I wouldn't be hosting unless they were all going to eat the same meal. I've never, in all my years, heard of so many individuals with so many psychological issues and dietary requirements. Never. It's almost like having a row of badges.

Strangeways19 · 22/05/2022 18:23

Can't stand it when people are vegan for any other reason than to reduce animal suffering - awareness of carbon footprint gets a point but I have been vegan for years, far before it became a trend & I've always hated it when people say that they are doing it for "health reasons" or some such rubbish

Tusue · 22/05/2022 18:30

Who on earth rings up on the day and tells the hostess they are suddenly vegan !!! Cheeky F————s , well done for not falling into the guilt trap and cooking something extra for them , their choice, their food ,to bring to the party.
Have fun.

You're a terrible vegan then. You want to reduce animal suffering, but you hate when other people reduce animal suffering when that isn't their main motivation, even though that is the result?

I mean, WTF? No logic, no care for animals, you might was well go eat a steak.

PortalooSunset · 22/05/2022 18:36

Oh blimey no YANBU! I mean, if they'd let you know before you'd planned/shopped that's one thing, but actually on the day?! CF-ery, completely.

I'm vegan because I like vegan food. Guess I'm a terrible person according to you.

L0stinCyberspace · 22/05/2022 18:44

I'd tell them "no problem - delighted you can join us but you'll have to bring your own portions to be microwaved, as I've already planned a menu for the Coeliac and Nut allergy people who have medical conditions".

felineweird · 22/05/2022 18:47

Blimey what idiots! A) you will increase your carbon footprint if you get something else B) since when in hell are vegan weekends a thing C) cheeky fuckery at its finest

HopeIsNotAStrategy · 22/05/2022 18:49

Just1moreq · 21/05/2022 12:53

I'm slightly more compassionate towards people who will get ill if they eat something cross contaminated rather than someone who would have happily eaten my planned meal yesterday and will happily eat it again Monday

Coeliac here. Well said. 👏

Ortega888 · 22/05/2022 18:50

If it was me I would have cancelled everyone’s meal and put the food in a freezer telling everyone that you need lots more notice to prepare a meal and I would invite 2 people over at a time once a week because 10 peoples is way too much work. Have an early night and tell them you will have to re arrange. You are being totally reasonable as who would want the responsibility of making sure everyone is catered for without worrying about giving them the wrong good. It sounds too stressful to me. Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Why should everyone else have their night disrupted because of this pair's antics?

Why?
Surely if you care so much about animals you would simply be thrilled, no matter why the person is vegan?

RaspberryChouxBuns · 22/05/2022 19:01

Lord please grant me the same confidence as people who get invited to dinner and then call to request vegan food.

They probably never get invited anywhere twice.

me4real · 22/05/2022 19:09

Even if they were weekend vegans but had let you know when it was first arranged weeks ago, that'd be ok maybe. Although gluten free and vegan and nut free makes it stressful to meal plan maybe. But I suppose there's always chickpea curry.

Either way, they don't get to change what you have to do at the last minute.

Dibbydoos · 22/05/2022 19:12

Hi OP, I voted you're not being unreasonable, but I'll point one thing out.

Climate change is going to mess our lives up quire badly and especially the lives of our kids/grandkids. We all need to start thinking about the transition and changes we can make to try to avoid catastrophic climate change.

BTW I thunk what you're doing with your friends is lovely, we used to do this with our friends, but moved away 😭

@Dibbydoos It's all the same scare stories there's been for decades. Like all doomsday cults, they have to keep pushing the end of the world back when it doesn't happen. The world is warmer in some periods and cooler in others- it's been like that since the dawn of time.

I like vegan food. I am not a vegan. Do you mean you don't like meat or dairy?

nopuppiesallowed · 22/05/2022 19:19

I'm coeliac. It's a medically diagnosed autoimmune disease. We are difficult to cater for. YOU ARE AMAZING AND KIND to cater for someone like me. Absolutely super! Anyone telling you at the very last minute that they have decided to be vegan for a couple of days needs a good head wobble.

It's like a friend of mine who asked for gluten free when we went out for Chinese. I told the waitress that it was a diet choice and not an allergy.

Friend got cross with me and asked me why I told them that. I said "do you seriously want them to have to do all the extra work of making sure there is no cross contamination from trace amounts of gluten when both you and I know that you're likely to eat some of the spring rolls I've ordered anyway?"

She shut up at that point.

You don't make people do loads of extra work for a fad.

I had similar with my DMum who was avoiding dairy (when it suited her ) , she requested her birthday cake (which I was making) be made with a non dairy fat not butter .
Fair enough, I did so but it was a bit of a faff because it doesn't store like a butter cake so I couldn't make it in advance and I had to make sure the fruit didn't sink. Its also more crumbly .
Everyone else would've eaten a reguar buttercake .

So in the resturant she has a slice of apple pie with cornish ice-cream.
When I said "Hey wait , the cake you asked me to make dairy free , now you're eating this"
Her reply was "Oh I eat a raw cooking apple after and the acid stops any side effects"
