To be conflicted over DH's hair

DH has always been a bit shit at getting his hair cut and will happily go 6 months between cuts. This has never bothered me but lockdown saw him go over 2 years without a cut so he ended up with shoulder-length hair tied up in a scruffy man-bun.

Finally I'd had enough of it so I made him an appointment with my hairdresser, Jo. I told her that he wanted to keep some of the length but I wanted it too short to tie in a bun. Apart from that she could use her imagination.

She gave him a Bob! A full on, stacked A-line bob with a high crown, side-swept fringe and points that curled under his chin. It would look really cute on a woman but on a man? Anyway, he likes it, Jo explained that she followed the brief (a bit of a stretch IMO) and DD styles it for him to keep it at max bouncy cuteness.

He even went back to Jo last week to get it cut again as she had told him that it needs to be cut every 6 weeks to keep its shape.

So I'm conflicted. On one hand, it's his hair, he, DD and friends who have commented seem to like it and I have to accept that it's neat and tidy and does sort of suit him. On the other hand, it's a bloody bob!

The only reason instruction that needs to be given to anyone cutting a man’s hair is this:

number two back and sides and trim on top.

sorted.

VestaTilley · 21/05/2022 15:12

I wouldn’t like it either, but you do sound worryingly controlling.

Mouk · 21/05/2022 15:15

YABU and massively controlling.

ashitghost · 21/05/2022 15:20

I would be horrified and it would be a dealbreaker. Yanbu.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 21/05/2022 15:20

can't get over the posters saying they book their partner's hair appointments for them and tell them what they need doing. It doesn't seem very manly to me, the whole thing. Including telling them to give them a massage and get their orifices waxed. Is this what young couples do now? I would find that level of mummying and pampering a right turn off. Nothing wrong with a big of ruggedness. As long as the emphasis isn't on rug.

This is what I imagined it to look like;

Is it too much to hope that he will now have a perm and ask you about the curly girl method?

@Onlyforcake

you are right, it is his hair. But would you really want to shag someone who looks like Willy wonka? If the answer is no, you should pipe down on telling the Op to unclench!

I wouldn't want to shag someone who needed me to talk to his hairdresser/barber.

What some women settle for boggles the mind.

CandidaAlbicans2 · 21/05/2022 15:37

Sounds lovely OP 😁😉

Its his hair yes, however its you who has to look at it! I dont blame you for saying how you would like it cut.Maybe gently point out you are not keen to him.Show some other styles?

WeAreTheHeroes · 21/05/2022 15:39

This thread is unexpectedly hilarious. If it's too short for him to tie up in a messy man bun, you could get him a headband or clips.

put him on the naughty step - a minute for each year of his age mind.

also, do a reward chart and praise his good behaviour.

🙄

Babykoala1 · 21/05/2022 15:50

This is absolute karma for giving the hairdresser instructions on how to cut your husbands hair 😂 bet you're missing the man bun now.

GreySquirrrel · 21/05/2022 15:56

Please tell me he has the sunglasses too? 🙏

The photos are EVERYTHING!! 😂😂😂

Thanks for the real laughing out louds Mumsnetters. Great Job 👏

CriticalEnergy · 21/05/2022 16:24

Haha, bad luck! That's what you get for telling a grown up how they can have their hair!

My husband has a scruffy man bun a lot of the time, or a ponytail. His hair is down to the bottom of his shoulder blades and it's absolutely gorgeous. Wavy/curly chocolate brown with the odd silver strand in it. He'd look rubbish with a bob but I can definitely see him getting one or an equally terrible cut if I left instructions with a stylist like he was my own personal man doll!

Testina · 21/05/2022 16:26

Literally could not have sex with a man I gave instructions to a barber for.

Hesma · 21/05/2022 16:27

🤣 well that came back to bite you in the bum didn’t it! They say be careful what you wish for 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

CriticalEnergy · 21/05/2022 16:29

Who are you to tell the hairdresser how your husband should have his hair cut. If a man did this to a woman MN would be full of red flag warnings.

WilsonMilson · 21/05/2022 16:48

All these photos are making my vagina seal over. Op, you have my sympathy.

Ponderingwindow · 21/05/2022 16:56

It’s his head, he should be giving the instructions.

I do understand though. When Dh’s hair grew in lockdown, I couldn’t help that I found it very unappealing. He hated it just as much as me and finally had me start cutting it, because even a wonky haircut became better in his mind than the long hair. I preferred it as well.

WalkingOnTheCracks · 21/05/2022 17:00

flipper97 · 21/05/2022 14:44

You can’t be too controlling when it comes to a bloke’s hair. Tell him to sort it out or the fanny fuses shut.

If a woman were to tell me to 'sort out' my hair, her fanny - sealed or otherwise - would immediately become superfluous to the future conduct of the relationship.

TheHaka · 21/05/2022 17:13

What with his bun & your bob I don’t think there’s much hope for either of you. As for Jo wanting to see him every 6 weeks, well, that’s another story.
