To be conflicted over DH's hair

DH has always been a bit shit at getting his hair cut and will happily go 6 months between cuts. This has never bothered me but lockdown saw him go over 2 years without a cut so he ended up with shoulder-length hair tied up in a scruffy man-bun.

Finally I'd had enough of it so I made him an appointment with my hairdresser, Jo. I told her that he wanted to keep some of the length but I wanted it too short to tie in a bun. Apart from that she could use her imagination.

She gave him a Bob! A full on, stacked A-line bob with a high crown, side-swept fringe and points that curled under his chin. It would look really cute on a woman but on a man? Anyway, he likes it, Jo explained that she followed the brief (a bit of a stretch IMO) and DD styles it for him to keep it at max bouncy cuteness.

He even went back to Jo last week to get it cut again as she had told him that it needs to be cut every 6 weeks to keep its shape.

So I'm conflicted. On one hand, it's his hair, he, DD and friends who have commented seem to like it and I have to accept that it's neat and tidy and does sort of suit him. On the other hand, it's a bloody bob!

@stayathomer

Are you? Why? It sounds horrible and unflattering

ResisterRex · 21/05/2022 14:19

Thank you for this thread OP, best laugh I've had in a while! The pictures...never realised the bob links between Charlie and the Chocolate Factory 1 (oompa loompas) and 2 (WW himself).

And @Ciko "I don't like the look of it" had me belly laughing 🤣

I cut DH and DS’s hair but then I’m a trained hairdresser. DH would like it longer (man of the 70’s!) but I cut it the way I like it to look. It’s not a short back and sides type cut at all and he knows it makes him look younger. My older DS who lives in London often asks me to cut his hair when he visits as he really likes the way I cut it.

DH knows he’s welcome to visit a hairdresser/barber and pay for the service but he’s a tight arse so he won’t pay and therefore he gets the style that I like to give him.

@JanesLittleGirl Is your hairdresser trained in mens hair cutting? It’s not included in the standard women’s hairdressing training courses (men’s hairlines and hair growth patterns etc. are different), so I’m wondering if she doesn’t get many male clients to practise on? Try getting him to visit a barbers next time maybe?

Can he zhuzh it up a bit with rollers and backcombing to make it look less of a mistake and more of a statement?

This killed me 😂😂😂

Onlyforcake · 21/05/2022 13:43

It's his hair. Unclench a little.

@Onlyforcake

you are right, it is his hair. But would you really want to shag someone who looks like Willy wonka? If the answer is no, you should pipe down on telling the Op to unclench!

TheMadGardener · 21/05/2022 14:23

I was married to DH for 22 years before he died. I preferred his hair super short but I never told him how he should be getting his hair cut and he never told me what to do with my hair either.

Just be glad he's not going bald. You are controlling.

diddl · 21/05/2022 14:25

I think that you over egged it with "DD styles it for him to keep it at max bouncy cuteness."

Snooks1971 · 21/05/2022 14:32

I can hairly believe this, but, is it more of a modern bob OP or more ummm medieval?

You've got to remember that the right accessories are key.

Add a handlebar moustache and a cigarette and it's no longer a girlish Bob ....

... it's a sexy Roberto!

Thanks for all the comments, they have been very helpful.

It's now obvious that:

  1. DH's hair belongs to DH FULL STOP.
  1. Involving myself was just being a dick.
  1. Making an appointment with my hairdresser was doubling down on my dickishness.
  1. DH will only change his hair if he wants and I get to live with it.
  1. DH is no David Beckham etc. but if I'm honest, it does look kinda cute and it feels nice and smells lovely. If he's happy then I'm happy and I still fancy the pants off him.

Finally, a real plus. DH and DD have had a relationship that would be best described as armed neutrality for the last 2 years but have become actual friends for the last 6 weeks. Long may it continue.

Finally finally, there is a chance that DH got a bob to wind me up - it would appeal to his sense of humour but I'm not going to explore it as I don't want to leave the happy place I've just got myself into.

Sorry OP this thread has made me 🤣. This isn't some practical joke they are all playing on you is it? As you kept asking him to get his hair cut. Maybe he's thought yes I will cut my hair....

Maireas · 21/05/2022 14:41

Jo is gaslighting you. You're not tipping her enough.
The husband is doing it for some sort of psychological revenge.
Jo and your husband are having an affair.

Sounds like Jo has him looking all swishy and sassy

flipper97 · 21/05/2022 14:44

You can’t be too controlling when it comes to a bloke’s hair. Tell him to sort it out or the fanny fuses shut.

Trivester · 21/05/2022 14:45

Ask Jo to cut yours to match.

WhackingPhoenix · 21/05/2022 14:45

Good for him! Bet you won’t interfere again Smile

Trivester · 21/05/2022 14:47

I’m picturing the transformation from man bun to bob

Perhaps they're are bonding over dilemmas about which conditioner is best.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 21/05/2022 14:55

Mumsnet is wierd lately. Loads of threads designed to garner as many pearl-clutching/LTB/CF/general WTF responses as possible......all written in a very similar style.

LTBWB .Leave The Bob Wearing Bastard.

I am actually howling at this
This is just the most hilarious thread. If it's real I can just imagine the husband in question with a smug grin patting his bob (that is not a euphemism) and thinking 'that will teach you sending me to the hairdressers'
