To make child pay for his own uniform?

My child is 8 and is very unorganised, he’s constantly losing his belongings at school and with the cost of living I can’t keep up like this. They never get found/returned despite them all being labelled.

The latest thing is his fleece, that costs £19. Went missing on Monday and hasn’t been handed in, need to sort it. He gets pocket money at £2 per week and saves this up to buy something big, so he can cover this.

Me and DH can’t agree on whether he should have to pay for the cost of a new one out of pocket money.

So AIBU to think it would be a good life lesson for him to have to pay for a replacement? Or is he too young to have to pay for his own uniform?

Yes, I can imagine your kid does a lot to keep on your good side.

No, if you share insights into your life and ask for opinions, you have to accept that you’ll get them, unfortunately.

No. I’m saying you should work out why she feels that way before she’s violent, rather than waiting for it to happen and then punishing her for it. But if you’ve been using food as a punished from as young as two then I’d say you’ve a long way to go for a healthy relationship.

I’m only going off what you put on here. Your pride in punishments for your two year old, and your daughter with SEN.

I get where youre coming from but is this really about instilling good behaviour in your child, or because you cant afford to replace clothes. Its not that other 8 year olds are incompetent. I think this kind of responsibility is too much for an 8 year old its really their parents job to be picking up after them so they can be carefree and play. You shouldnt be putting your job onto them. You shouldnt be involving them in your finances either or scaring them with it. what did you say to make your poor child offer up 10 weeks worth of their £2 a week pittance

Babybuys · 20/05/2022 22:45

@Pumperthepumper I agree with what you have said, that other persons behaviour towards their children is appalling.
