Everton have just lost. I now have to deal with a very pissed off husband - AIBU that my husband shouldn’t get too emotionally invested in something he has zero control over?

I’d understand a little bit more if he actually played on the bloody team!!

No advice but I'm in exactly the same situation.

He's basically told me he's going to stay in bed all weekend 🙄🙈

😂
I do hope you don't have kids that need looking after, as this is totally fucking unacceptable not to mention completely childish.

lancsgirl85 · 19/05/2022 20:50

So glad I married someone with zero interest in football.

Same!

DH is a die hard Liverpool supporter. When they have down appallingly he's a bit/quiet down for a short while but none of that sulking or angry aggressive shit.

Not comparable at all. When was the last time Liverpool we’re battling relegation?

SeedyBloomer · 19/05/2022 20:53

It could result in his team being relegated from the premier league. It’s a massive game with huge consequences. I don’t expect people who don’t follow football to understand, but it does mean the advice from people on here who haven’t got a clue about what’s going on is pretty irrelevant. The club was a founding member of the Football League in 1888. It’s been in the Premiere League ever since it was established 30 years ago. The manager is a legend in English football. I see plenty of posters are quick to reply with how pathetic your husband / the sport is, simply because they don’t have an interest in it themselves, but people’s jobs and careers are hanging on this game and the next. So is the budget for better players. Your husband is upset because it’s upsetting.

RandomMess · 19/05/2022 20:53

There have been times over the last 30 years when it hasn't been good for Liverpool.

SeedyBloomer · 19/05/2022 20:53

*Premier

jenny5000 · 19/05/2022 20:56

2-0 against Palace is pretty bad to be fair. We all get a bit sad here if our teams aren't doing well, but not to the extent that it impinges on normal life.

It's still men you don't know, kicking a ball around a field. Men who aren't typically from the place they're 'representing' anyway. It's meaningless regardless what team it is.

Now by all means enjoy it. I like going to the football. But this life or death nonsense? No.

If you can comprehend enjoying football, I’m surprised that you can’t comprehend being upset when your team is losing a big game that could have huge implications for the future of the club.

MayorDusty · 19/05/2022 21:01

Does anyone remember Ripping Yarns, Barnstonworth United?
Still so many football fans carry on like this, so indulgent.

RandomMess · 19/05/2022 21:01

It all comes back to ££££

It ruined Footie, even DH quickly agreed with me.

One positive of Brexit is that they could change the rules so UK teams have to have x % of local born players that have come up through their own academies etc.

It is only a game.

stokiemum62 · 19/05/2022 21:01

2 : 1 now, there is still time!

Oblomov22 · 19/05/2022 21:02

YABU
Come on. It matters to some people.

Why marry him if you knew? Hmm

BlueBloodedBlue · 19/05/2022 21:03

I fully understand how your DH feels, huge Everton fans here, and we will all be gutted if we lose.

I don't think anyone should take their bad mood out on others but unless you are a fan, I think it's hard to understand how much it means.

We've just got a goal back so there's still hope. COYB!

I have a scar on my lip due to getting caught up in a fight at a pub when england were in the world cup semi final in 05/06?

They basically went mental and started flinging glasses around and one smashed on my face. So YANBU I cant stand it, even on a smaller scale.

No, England weren't in a World Cup semi final in 2006.

World Cup semi finals - 1966, 1990 and 2018.

Euro semi final - 1996.

That's it.

Majority of football fans are not violent and don't go on the rampage after a defeat.

That rule already exists (it was introduced not that long before Brexit) - although ‘homegrown’ players mean those who have been at the club for at least 3 years before their 21st birthday, so it doesn’t necessarily require them to be born locally (I can’t imagine a ‘born locally’ rule to ever be introduced, given the disparity in catchment areas that would create).

weebarra · 19/05/2022 21:06

My football team are fighting relegation and the first leg of our play off is tomorrow. I've had a season ticket since I was 11, I go with my DF and DD. I will be very sad if we go down. I'm not a man child, I'm not a domestic abuser, I'm not a toddler. Football is my hobby, and it's a lovely bonding experience for us.

Fluval · 19/05/2022 21:07

oof, Villa just equalized against Burnley, good news for Everton that.

Yes but it's not his job on the line. A little perspective is helpful. To be fleetingly upset, yes fair enough, but some people take it far too far imo.

BlueBloodedBlue · 19/05/2022 21:11

Hi @weebarra , how ya doing? I can't remember what name I had but we were in the tamoxigang together all those years ago. Hope you're well. I seem to remember you trying to be well enough to go to a big match at that time - sorry to hear your team are struggling too atm.

I agree, but it’s the middle of the game in this instance.

weebarra · 19/05/2022 21:17

@BlueBloodedBlue - omg! 9 years in October. Yes I made it to the Scottish cup final three days after my bmx. I am doing great and my wee baby is now 8. I hope you're doing well too.

RandomMess · 19/05/2022 21:20

@Fluval my idea for homegrown/born would be complex, allowing for sizes of population etc.

To play in the Yorkshire Cricket Team you used to have to be born in Yorkshire. Don't think it should be that extreme but I want to see clubs forced to plough £££££ into their local communities equally male and female.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 19/05/2022 21:22

Umm, well you have a point because it's annoying for you when he's moody and he should try to minimise that. But I watched a sad film yesterday and cried a bit, is that not allowed either? I mean it was only a couple of hours and they weren't even real people.

I think it's human to emotionally invest in things and then to have to deal with strong emotions when things go well or badly.
