To choose an Irish name for their dog... in light of Britain's history with Ireland.

YABU- get over it, it's a dog
YANBU- it is tone deaf

OP posts:

This is going to be Meghan Markle’s fault isn’t it?

She'll be claiming offence through that mouthpiece of hers .

LondonWolf · 02/05/2022 19:16

There really is nothing you can do these days without someone finding offence in it. It's all so tedious 🙄

That's as pretentious as the OP, such pseudo-concern for others.

Pugdogmom · 02/05/2022 19:37

Is everyone on the wine today? 2nd ridiculous thread I have read.

Pugdogmom · 02/05/2022 19:39

I have a dog called Patrick ( born on 17th March, hence name) , who was born in England, lives in Scotland, but maybe that's OK as my parents were Irish..🙄🤣

UpCloseAndPersonalWithGlenda · 02/05/2022 19:41

They should have called it Vladimir.

Poptart4 · 02/05/2022 19:41

I'm Irish, YABU.

PinkiOcelot · 02/05/2022 19:41

Eh?!

Beautifulmonster87 · 02/05/2022 19:42

Do you have a life?

Say Órla wrong and it means vomit. I’m Irish by descent and wanted to call DD Órla but in the UK with no fada? Er… no.

I'm Irish and know loads of Orlas/Orlaghs
Don't know anyone you uses a fada!

Neverreturntoathread · 02/05/2022 19:45

There are loads of kids in England called Orla, it’s very popular at the moment. She probably named it after a friend at school or something.

But yeah why not bash a 7 year old over the name she chose for her pet 🙄

bellabasset · 02/05/2022 19:48

My dm was an English Protestant, my df was an Irish Catholic from the South and we were brought up in London post WW2. A happy family, although we were used to comments made about the Irish

Bonus is I'm also a citizen of the EU

Bellie710 · 02/05/2022 19:50

WTAF

Hesma · 02/05/2022 19:50

My Dad’s English and married my Irish mother… should I too be banished from the shires???

You’re being **ing ridiculous

Herbarium · 02/05/2022 19:51

This is either the daily fail or someone desperately in need of a life, hobby or spiritual enlightenment!
it's a big world out there honey, try it and see! Promise!

georgarina · 02/05/2022 19:51

Ahh this was a good one thanks OP :)
Almost as good as the gifted daughter who got Alice in Wonderland for her birthday

pigsDOfly · 02/05/2022 19:52

Loads of people give their dogs human names, I think it's cute.

I've met a good few dogs over the years with the diminutive of my son's name.

Somehow I've always managed not to be offended by it. In fact I think it's a great name for a dog.

LampHat · 02/05/2022 19:53

Jesus Christ, it’s not like they called it Gerry Adams.

BadNomad · 02/05/2022 19:54

I'm more upset they gave their child the same first name as George W. Bush!

Cheesecakeandwineinasuitcase · 02/05/2022 19:56

Yet more Brit bashing. It’s getting really tiresome now. If you are so ashamed of our past then why associate yourself with anything that is British. I’m fed up if feeling like I should apologise for the actions of people who lived hundreds of years ago just because I happened to be born in this country. Do you also feel that anyone who is British is insensitive if they give their baby an Irish name? I know at least 2 Orlas and 2 Aoifes. Should their parents be challenged on their choice of name?

Koigarden · 02/05/2022 19:56

Eh? 😵‍💫

You beat me to it!
Crazy thread.

Cheesecakeandwineinasuitcase · 02/05/2022 19:59

Quite possibly one of the silliest posts I’ve ever seen on this site.

Muckymaisonette · 02/05/2022 20:01

Fun fact
Orla in Hebrew means ‘foreskin’

Hopefully the dog is named after an Irish princess than male anatomy!

x2boys · 02/05/2022 20:01

It's a lovely name my cousin ,s daughter is called Orla ,her mum is Irish but I didn't know you need to have Irish heritage to use names ?
I like human names for dogs .
