To think Will & Kate calling their dog Orla is insensitive at best

To choose an Irish name for their dog... in light of Britain's history with Ireland.

YABU- get over it, it's a dog
YANBU- it is tone deaf

By that token, what should we do with Boris then, a Russian name. The HRH’s changed their name to Windsor because of the German connection. Where does it end! How absurd, the 21st century was hopefully a time of a united world, not a divisive nationalistic world. Looking backwards into history is precisely why Putin has visions of the old USSR.

our first rabbit a lovely big french lop now sadly departed to the bridge is called boris lol , my dd picked the name lol . the only thing that offended me was that the idiot we have as a prime minister shared the name ! im sure our boris could probably have run the country better

Wait wait wait — hold up.

I mistakenly voted yanbu and you are definitely YABU. I apologise for that error.

I named my dog Bunny and can’t sleep at night for worry that the rabbit-people will come after me with torches and pitchforks.

What’s next? People getting bent over what the Sussexes name their children?

Utter bollocks.

AmIbeingTreasonable · 04/05/2022 06:35

You clearly have nothing of any substance to worry about/be offended by, jeez you're being ridiculous! 🙄

Desperatelyseekinganame · 04/05/2022 07:03

While I would never have begun a thread about this or said it aloud, when I read about their dog's name, I did think 🤔 I am surprised they have chosen that name. Would people have felt differently if they had picked an African or Carribean name? I'm Irish living in UK for 15 years and have experienced anti irish sentiment here, it still prevails. Given this, they could have chosen a different name or renamed it...

gimmepeaceandsky · 04/05/2022 07:06

No,
you are the one being over sensitive.

get a life

Spidey66 · 04/05/2022 07:12

I'm irish (well, my late parents were.). I think it's a lovely name, for a baby or a dog. I'm not offended.

I know of a dog called Murphy. Is that OK with you? Would it make a difference if I told you Murphy's owner is from Dublin?

MumMRM · 04/05/2022 07:52

This is a ridiculous post! Could it be that the children like the Orla character from Frozen? Are you saying that no one in Engand can use an Irish name for their pets? What about for their children? Madness!!!!

loveisanopensore · 04/05/2022 08:46

Do you mean Olaf??

BettyJDavies · 04/05/2022 09:31

No your just being pathetic in Irish Orla means golden princess. If you want to put other meanings to it that is your problem not theirs.

Phos · 04/05/2022 09:41

Get a bloody grip. How many English people are there called Patrick or Niamh? Shall we get them all a deed poll?

Shimmyingmetacos · 04/05/2022 10:38

If we go back far enough in History there'll be a reason for most people in the world to pretty much not do anything at all based on today's sensitivities. I know French people with English names, English people with German names, Japanese people with English names and it goes on and on. I think its lovely and has no further significance than people picking a name they like or after someone they admire / love

SueRu · 04/05/2022 12:30

I'm Irish and it doesn't bother me in the slightest.

Copperpottle · 04/05/2022 12:45

Gosh, OP, do your arms hurt from the length of that reach?

Tsuni · 04/05/2022 12:51

I bet Meghan put them up to it.

Roo4u · 04/05/2022 13:20

YABU........ l wouldn't read too much into it. Maybe they think it's a cute name.
OT but here is my little Delilah, Some of my family is not crazy about the name, but l like it. (she already had her name when l adopted her)
LOL I nicknamed her "Spot" because of the spot on her back,
and "Stretch" because sometimes when she's been sleeping, she'll come into the room, and stop, and stretch one of her little paws up in the air, and go a little further, and stop, and stretch her other little paw up in the air.
She's cute!

The response to Delilah was overwhelming! (JK)
😀

Wrong . Orla means vomit. Quite a good name for a dog I think. Órflaith means Golden Princess. But most people - Irish included - can't be arsed to use proper spelling. Fed up explaining the pronunciation too. Are they building bridges with Ireland via the doggie ? Who knows or cares. Better than the barmy Boris bridge anyway.

Blantw · 06/05/2022 15:22

Are you for real? Is it any wonder that there is hate in the world when people like you exist.

JaneJeffer · 06/05/2022 15:25

Every time I think this stupid thread has finally disappeared someone bumps it back up.

PeacockPartyTime · 06/05/2022 16:43

For Goodness sake OP, bore off. Haven’t you got any roads you can glue yourself to or something?

midsomermurderess · 06/05/2022 19:09

14 pages though. She's on to something.
