To think if you vote Tory now…

You’re effectively propping up this absolute shit show of a government and have no empathy.

I’ll be honest, I’ve voted conservative before as a middle class family their (taxation) policies have suited me more than Labour. I honestly feel ashamed of this and I wish I could’ve seen that the conservatives agenda of ‘levelling up’ is BS.

Regardless of your personal situation, enough is enough now right? People are reliant on food banks, they’re choosing between heating and eating. Austerity has been a total nightmare for society causing the rich to get richer and the poor to get poorer.

@Linguini

I'd still rather the Tories get in than labour right now, sorry shoot me.
Genuinely interested to know why? I think Kier Starmer, Jess Phillips, David Lammy , Yvette Cooper etc all seem smarter, braver and more in touch with real life to me than the tories - before I even begin to consider moral standing. What is it that makes you hold the conservatives in higher regard? Sincere question.

He's scrambling for votes anywhere he can. Don't be fooled. He doesn't give a crap, but he knows people feel strongly about it. If he thought it would give him more votes, he'd have gone for the other side.

Well, yes, that's rather the point, he makes policies people like, so they vote for them. No one cares whether he personally likes them or not. Most leaders have to sometimes push policies that aren't their personal favorites.

@GeneLovesJezebel

Didn’t Jeremy Corbin have a family meal when he shouldn’t have ? And I don’t care about that either.
Bingo!!!

Thank you @GeneLovesJezebel my evenings game of bingo is complete.

custardlover · 12/04/2022 22:02

Ok maybe I won't bother with genuinely trying to understand then!

AlternativePerspective · 12/04/2022 22:03

Didn’t Jeremy Corbin have a family meal when he shouldn’t have ? And I don’t care about that either. imagine if labour had got in at the last election we would have had him in power, and then the antics of his brother would have been even more prominent. Would have been interesting to see how he responded to those if requested to do so by the press…. Because he would have been confronted about it, no doubt.

FrankLeeSpeaking · 12/04/2022 22:03

Labour is not really left and has not been for some time.

However, that said, everybody should of course be allowed to vote for whoever they want, and shouldn't have to justify it to anybody, and that is something we should all be able to agree on.

SherbetDips · 12/04/2022 22:04

@custardlover because they are not in power, it’s very easy to be the high horse when your not actually responsible.

I don’t think the conservatives are perfect but atm there’s not an alternative for me.

Lots of people only vote for what benefits them in simplistic terms. Lower tax would be beneficial for me however a more equal & fairer society would also benefit me. We have neither now.

I also think it's an aspirational thing. Some don't want to vote against things that they hope to achieve one day & therefore penalise themselves. However they don't realise that it just makes it harder for them to achieve these hopes.

I quite agree I enjoy doffing my cap and tugging my forelock to the multi-millionaires who are so much superior to me in government that they have even spent the pandemic when I was locked in a small flat, partying and enriching themselves.

Caps off to them.

AlternativePerspective · 12/04/2022 22:07

It baffles me that people rate Keir Starmer. When he first took over the labour leadership I thought he might have something about him, but he’s such a drip. He always sits in the commons bleating about how the conservatives “shouldn’t be doing this,” and “should be doing that,” but he never actually says what his party would do. He’s too busy taking potshots at the tories.

Maybe if he came up with something concrete people would be more inclined to listen to him.

SherbetDips · 12/04/2022 22:08

@jgw1 yeah it was shit they did that, but I’d still rather have them in power then the Left.

They think women can have penises and don't care how gender ideology affects vulnerable women and children.

Yes indeed, you are quite correct. Whereas Boris knows exactly what a woman is having shafted so many of them on his rise up the pole.

@FrankLeeSpeaking

Yup. And the number of people here falling for it is indicative of the toxic levels of transphobia on MN

That is not an answer to my question - should I assume therefore that you do consider the current cabinet - Dorries, Truss, Raab etc to be more competent than anyone else who could be governing? Put aside the matter of ethics and decency but judging on basic competency? I am intrigued and again, genuinely interested in what makes to judge them positively (and I really an interesting in how you judge rather than how you feel).

With my professional hat on, I wouldn't employ any of them.

HermioneWeasley · 12/04/2022 22:11

What’s the alternative? Vote Labour and have womens rights chucked in the bin?

I think the current government ar with most lazy, incompetent and corrupt we’ve had for many decades, but I don’t actually think Labour would be more effective, they’d just be crap in different ways AND we’d lose womens rights,

jgw1 · 12/04/2022 22:12
@jgw1 yeah it was shit they did that, but I’d still rather have them in power then the Left.
Yes indeed @SherbetDips I quite agree. The left get quite aggrieved if you tug your forelock at them, and really do not seem to understand that it is important for our government to not pay tax, but to raise it on the poor so that they cannot feed themselves.

SpringHasSprungYay · 12/04/2022 22:12
@SpringHasSprungYay really that’s a shame. So you have no friends who are Right wing?
Well I find people who vote Tory are very selfish. Some may acquaintances but not friends.

Oh indeed women's rights are hugely important, especially to Boris which is why and the Tory governments have spent so long cutting public services some of which are disproportionately used by women.
SherbetDips · 12/04/2022 22:14

@SpringHasSprungYay that’s very a very narrow minded view. But you are entitled to your opinion.

If only there was a credible opposition.

The Tories could hand this on a plate to Labour, and Labour would still fuck it up
