To think if you vote Tory now…

You’re effectively propping up this absolute shit show of a government and have no empathy.

I’ll be honest, I’ve voted conservative before as a middle class family their (taxation) policies have suited me more than Labour. I honestly feel ashamed of this and I wish I could’ve seen that the conservatives agenda of ‘levelling up’ is BS.

Regardless of your personal situation, enough is enough now right? People are reliant on food banks, they’re choosing between heating and eating. Austerity has been a total nightmare for society causing the rich to get richer and the poor to get poorer.

@Parker231

Why was Boris allowed to announce asylum seekers would be sent to Rwanda - on the first day of ‘purdah’ for local elections?
Because purdah doesn’t apply to central government in local elections.
Parker231 · 19/04/2022 12:44

From Twitter - Government whips have called a mass meeting of the Conservative Party's backbenchers for 8pm tonight in the House of Commons.

HRTQueen · 19/04/2022 12:51

Of course the have

Whip their backbenchers into place

In party squabbles are quickly quashed when votes are at stake

Blossomtoes · 19/04/2022 12:54

It’s not an in party squabble though. Some of those MPs have very tight majorities, they’re having to judge if backing Johnson is likely to lose them their seat. They’re going to listen to their constituents not the whips if they have any sense.

Inkyblue123 · 19/04/2022 12:55

Will you stand in the local elections? Will you volunteer your time to leaflet for another party? Probably not, so maybe just respect the democratic process and vote for who you want and mind yer business.

HRTQueen · 19/04/2022 13:08

One thing Tories are expert at is putting on a united front. In party squabbles are not good for publicity

May made this mistake of alienating herself.

They will be told what to say what to do the carrot is you want your seat don’t you …

The mindset is always about staying in power (it’s only there you can make changes)

I would be surprised if there is a substantial backlash against Johnson or a leadership contest the focus for his pr is there are bigger issues that need to be dealt with let’s move forward and deal with them

Blossomtoes · 19/04/2022 13:14

They will be told what to say what to do the carrot is you want your seat don’t you …

And some of them will say that their only hope of keeping their seat is to publicly ditch Johnson. They hardly putting up a united front right now.

HRTQueen · 19/04/2022 13:37

It won’t be many

It’s not how the Tories do things

Labour should learn from how they operate as a party. There is a reason they are so successful it’s not just purely down to politics it’s how they are viewed as a ruling party

They have 360 MP’s (just looked it up) a few speaking out won’t harm the party

Blair (well more so Alistair Campbell) managed the party this way in his early years there was no bowing down to the left they were left to get on with planning the revolution and largely ignored and quickly put into place or statements released when they got out of line they were made to look irrelevant

Blossomtoes · 19/04/2022 15:25

You’re talking about the old Tory party. That’s long gone. There are no lessons for any other party in the way this lot operates - apart from an object lesson in how not to govern.

bellinisurge · 19/04/2022 15:29

Not planning to vote Tory. But not planning to vote Labour-will spoil my paper.

Labour is not trying to roll back de facto self ID currently in place. And is likely to introduce legal self ID if it gets in power. No, thank you. I can't trust Labour with my vote. If it talked sense on women's rights, I would vote for them.

Sarkymarky · 19/04/2022 15:43

Always voted conservative I voted for Boris as leader of the party

SleeplessInEngland · 19/04/2022 15:45

"They are all as bad as each other."

Only people who don't follow politics say this. Not all MPs are the same.

Or how much you can get away with. They’re providing a pretty good lesson in just how easy it is to corrupt our political system.
Blossomtoes · 19/04/2022 15:57

Very true.

HRTQueen · 19/04/2022 16:59

I’m not hearing many Tory MP’s speaking out.

Like I said before the Tories aim is to always be in power (you can’t make changes in opposition)

Let’s see how many Tories vote against Johnson they have the choice to decide on what’s important honesty or rocking the boat just before elections and push a leadership challenge

I don’t think Johnson is that unpopular yet or the opposition that much of a threat.

I don’t think they party has changed just led by a corrupt leader who many dislike (and always have) in the party they knew who they were voting in to be leader

Blossomtoes · 19/04/2022 17:41

I don’t think they party has changed

Clearly my memory is longer than yours. Major’s was the last truly Conservative government.

Fulmine · 19/04/2022 17:47

@Sarkymarky

Always voted conservative I voted for Boris as leader of the party
And do you feel he is a credit to the party?
Cornettoninja · 19/04/2022 18:06

@HRTQueen I’m interested in how spooked the back benches are now attention has been brought to their role in enabling this cabinet to continue. Starmer and Blackford did well (imho) to highlight this today, politicians of all colours are generally wary of reputation by association and there are local elections coming up….

HRTQueen · 19/04/2022 18:21

And it was called the sleazy party

Wasn’t it the time for cash for questions? The party had to shake it off with the back to basics campaign but then they had even more sleaze to deal with

I think John Major is a decent politician (was great in for the Remain campaign and since, I couldn’t care less about his affair, Johnson is beyond just having affairs). I remember him looking so relieved when Tony Blair won he never seemed comfortable being leader of the party.

The Conservative party isn’t governed by ideology like Labour. Many Tories don’t like Boris they never have and they should be embarrassed of their party leader but it won’t stop them voting in an election. Many feel that Corbyn made Labour again but it didn’t help win an election

There's nothing remotely conservative about them, that's what makes me laugh. They have no principles, they'll do anything for power and to feather their own nests.

It's also fair to say that Blair's Labour weren't really 'Labour' (hence they changed the name).

DownNative · 19/04/2022 19:23

@User135644

"It's also fair to say that Blair's Labour weren't really 'Labour' (hence they changed the name)."

Except Labour didn't actually change their name as ballot papers always had them down as Labour throughout Blair's tenure.

"New Labour" was merely spin to be used in the press to suggest Labour wasn't old fashioned or stuck in the past like Kinnock's or Foot's Labour. That's all.

JC544D · 19/04/2022 22:02

The Conservative party have had twelve years in power now. I don't think anyone can seriously say it's been a great time for the UK.

I recall 12 years ago that the NHS wasn't perfect, but I didn't need to wait weeks for a blood test, it was just done by the doctor there and then. I wasn't eleventh in a queue on the phone for 40 minutes just to get an appointment!

Buying a house was unachievable for me then, but the difference is if we had the same jobs we have now back then (or an equivalent salary) we would have been able to afford it. Social mobility and life expectancy are declining and the economy is likely to get worse, which is clearly a very poor performance from this government.

I feel like this government are laughing at anyone who hasn't been born with the privileges they have had. They literally think we are all stupid and weak, and to be fair, I think they might be right in some cases. They will take the piss as long as these people will vote for them and they get away with such a poor performance.
