What age did you start going grey?

I've been getting grey hairs since I was 21, If I don't dye it my hair will still be uniform dark but with a few noticeable greys. Always thought this was very young to get them, just interested to hear others' experiences

Doesn't seem like there is a normal age to go grey. Might have to look up what the science is behind the age of going grey unless anyone else can explain what's going on?

caringcarer · 11/04/2022 23:59

First few grey stands late 20's. Had to start dying hair at 30 as brunette so noticeable. Worst around temples.

AhhhHereItGoes · 11/04/2022 23:59

Odd grey hairs from 22-23.

Slightly more now but not noticeable at 32.

Expect at around 40 it'll be noticeable and by 50 mostly covering my hair.

I dye it about 1-2 times a year.

elliejjtiny · 12/04/2022 00:00

About 35 I think. Now nearly 40 and my hair is definitely a lighter shade of brown than it used to be.

HomeprideSaucy · 12/04/2022 00:07

I'm 48 and if anything my hair is darker now than it was at 25.

Pegasussnail · 12/04/2022 00:13

I'm mid 40s and no grey. Runs in our family (I've stray white brows)

oviraptor21 · 12/04/2022 00:16

I'm blonde and if there's any grey it's well disguised.
Some of my hairs are bit more wiry so I'm guessing they may be greys really.

Phewthemutinyworked · 12/04/2022 00:23

about 30 …I think!

Gilead · 12/04/2022 00:23

63, I have a few but definitely more dark than grey still.

Dancer47 · 12/04/2022 00:52

50 and I detest it. It is in uneven patches and I look like a bloody snow leopard. I just don't have the features to carry it off. The problem is I can't afford to go to the hairdresser and home dye jobs are a disaster. They always fade to a horrible rusty dark red.

The little sacs in each hair follicle that hold the colour supply for the individual hair run out of colour. Grey hair is hair with no pigment in it. It's genetic apparently, although illness and shock can make it worse.

Late 20s. It really accelerated by the time I hit 30 and now I'm 40 I'd say I'm about about 40% grey, it's hard to tell as my hair is bleached so I don't allow for the roots to get too bad although lockdown was a real eye opener!

itsstillgood · 12/04/2022 01:02

Early 20s. Mid 40s now and more grey than brown. I like the grey more than mousey brown it became about 17 (I'd been blonde until then). Used to dye occasionally as didn't like the brown, stopped as grey set in properly.

Oneeata · 12/04/2022 01:18

I'm starting now at 43. Weird thing is my brunette hair is poker straight but these silver blighters are coming through curly and I mean currrrrrlly like tight spirally curls. So strange.

lap90 · 12/04/2022 02:35

I'm early 30's... hairdresser found my first grey last month.

constantindigestion · 12/04/2022 03:35

19

pollyglot · 12/04/2022 03:54

72, and the odd grey hair appearing now. DGM and DM had red hair and never went grey.

HarrietM87 · 12/04/2022 06:34

After my second baby was born when I was 33 I saw my first grey. Now at 35 I have more but the strands are still countable…just. Weirdly the rest of my hair has changed colour too. It was auburn when I was a baby then darkened to brown as I got older, but is now very red again.

emmabate1973 · 12/04/2022 06:50

Mid thirties.

nicesausages · 12/04/2022 07:39
  1. I'm 51 and the greying seems to be speeding up now, but it still looks mainly dark. I have got lighter highlights put in it now which blends out the grey and make it look brighter.
Hesma · 12/04/2022 08:02

I’m 48, noticed a couple of silver eyebrow hairs but that’s it… still waiting

SockQueen · 12/04/2022 08:30

I found my first grey hair on my wedding day, aged 27! But since then there was only one or two here and there. Only became more than that after I had DS2 (at 34) - I think most of the post-baby regrowth came in grey! It's still only speckled really, but I dye it now.

ClaudineClare · 12/04/2022 08:49

Early 30s. Am now pushing 60 but still much more brown than grey, my hair looks faded rather than grey. My mum never went fully grey, she just had a few greys scattered through her red hair. My dad went snowy white. I think I am in between!

onmyway2010 · 12/04/2022 13:33
  1. In my 40s now and the top/front half is pretty solid grey now but I dye it. I've plucked about 5 or 6 grey hairs from my 8yo's head over the past year! Poor kid
