Johnson, has in his gift, the power to re introduce single sex wards, female only prisons and keep female sport female but he wont do it & that is why i do not trust him.... he says one thing and does another.

And we are waiting to see how far we can get these exceptions back on track now. It will take time. But there is an indication that there is at least a will to get this right, and a willingness to listen to both sides.

Why will it take time? These are, in the main, things that don't have to go through Parliament. And why has nothing been done in the last three years?

Blossomtoes · 08/04/2022 12:51

It would send a massive message if he and JKR were to have a meeting at No 10, though

I doubt she’d accept the invitation. But I’d very much like to hear her views on the wisdom of voting Tory.

EthelTheAardvark · 08/04/2022 12:53

The chances of JKR wanting to work with Johnson and a Conservative government are effectively nil. She has far too much sense and honesty.

Because retracting the past policy decisions do take time to filter down. How many schools are still not up to date with the Education guidance issued September 2020? quite a lot!

I would love for it to be a click of the fingers, but each and every policy and guidance will need to be addressed.

Was dealing with a teen issue yesterday (friend of my daughter's venting about something that happened. She said "and then he "they/them'd" me. Like I give a shit about all that rubbish". Not the first time I've heard this from teenagers who are otherwise very switched on e.g. positive about LGB people.
Gen Z are bored of this nonsense and despite, or probably because of, being preached at by Millennial teachers, are not interested.

Sartre · 08/04/2022 13:17

Possibly the only thing I’ve agreed with him on but yes, I very much do. They seem to be the only party happy to stand up and define what a woman/female is. Still can’t vote for them.

He's already shown he can get things through Parliament pretty quickly when it benefits him. Let's see if he applies equal urgency to women's rights and wellbeing. He could expedite the changes mentioned above if he wants to. Let's see.
Blossomtoes · 08/04/2022 13:37

Spot on. He’s got an 80 seat majority. He could change virtually anything if he wanted to. Let’s see him put his money where his mouth is - deeds, not words.

And even then, it's not that easy. This was in response to the EHRC guidance on single sex provision:

Daily Mail:

An NHS equality chief has rallied colleagues and urged them to ignore the ruling from a government watchdog which states trans people can be legally excluded from single-sex wards.

NHS bosses have publicly criticised the guidance which means that trans women can be legally excluded from services such as rape counselling for women, women's refuges and women's fitness classes if deemed justifiable.

Tara Hewitt, the group head of equality, diversity and inclusion at Northern Care Alliance NHS Group, slammed the ruling as 'transphobic' and urged her colleagues to ignore its guidance.

The "ruling" is nothing new, it's simply restating the provision for single sex services contained within the EA 2010. The battle is undoing Stonewall Law. Stonewall have misinformed many organisations about the EA 2010 by changing the protected characteristics of sex and gender reassignment to gender and gender identity, people are now convinced it's unlawful to maintain single sex spaces and services. Correcting this is going to take some time but the recent guidance from the EHRC is a start.

It’s perfectly easy. You sack the Tara Hewitts of this world. No NHS organisation needs a head of equality, diversity and inclusion.
lifeturnsonadime · 08/04/2022 14:15

He doesn’t need to change primary legislation to enforce single sex exemptions , they are to be applied by service providers and can even be used to exempt those with a GRC if proportionate and justifiable. Other than revoke the GRC in its entirety there is no legislation that can be ‘rushed through’ . There will be little political appetite for that right now given that existing laws , if properly applied, are adequate to provide safe spaces to vulnerable women. What is required is for organisations to follow the EHRC rather than Stonewall guidance. I am sure there will be cases through the courts in due course on this interpretation.

ummmmm the Tories have been in power for 12 years, if womens rights mattered to them, these policy decisions would never have happened.

12 years! my DD was in primary school back then, now working on a stroke rehab unit and done 3 years in Uni....

The Tories don't give a flying fuck about Womens Rights.

Its time to give others a chance, 3 Parliamentary terms is plenty to sort out these issues.

LouisRenault · 08/04/2022 14:31

No thanks if it includes Self ID and further erasure

Alexandra you do realise that it is not parliaments job to ensure that legislation is correctly interpreted? That’s the job of the judiciary.

How old do you think the millennials are?
ilovesooty · 08/04/2022 14:53

All Johnson has done so far is utter a few sentences defining a woman.

I imagine quite a few people are now waiting with interest to see what he actually does about addressing the issues and situations that women are concerned about. Very interesting that one or two posters are already saying why he can't address this as a matter of urgency. When he wants to act quickly in situations benefiting what he wants to drive forward, he's demonstrated that he doesn't accept things standing in his way. Let's see if he feels urgency about this.

DrSbaitso · 08/04/2022 14:57

And it's madness, and vote-losing, that Starmer can't.

It is when the enactment of the legislation is in one of its own departments, eg the NHS.
Historyherstory · 08/04/2022 15:11

Waiting with baited breath for sone follow-up action but I’m assuming that’s beyond him ..

lifeturnsonadime · 08/04/2022 15:39

And in the meantime Emily Thornberry is doubling down. Apparently ‘most’ women are adult females. Completely lost the plot.

It's people in their 30s who are driving this?

As well as destroying the world one avocado at a time, of course.
