To feel cheated by my doula

Yumyumcakes · 05/04/2022 11:04

For my second 2 months old, dh and I made the decision to have a doula as my birth partner as we had no other childcare for our child at home. I didn’t want to go it alone as I was quite nervous of being mistreated, I didn’t have the best first labour.

So I hired a doula and I honestly feel robbed. Robbed not only of money (nearly £1k) but of that supportive presence during labour. I’m actually quite cross about it, of course I gave feedback on how I feel.

The woman I had, drove the wrong way to the hospital taking nearly triple the amount of time. Left me to walk from the carpark alone to the delivery unit whilst she parked the car in active labour, there were a few instances where I needed some extra advocacy when the midwife wasn’t really listening to me (nothing crazy, just preferences like my bum was facing the door and I wasn’t comfortable with being exposed to everyone in the corridor so just asked for a blanket) and nothing, no coachIng, no reminding of breathing techniques, no words of encouragement, no massage, pressure points, reminding to move around… literally nothing. She sat there on her phone and ate my snacks and drank my sports drinks. It was to the extent that the midwife even commented to leave some of the snacks for me and when the doula left 30 mins after birth on how little she did. My husband had one ask, just keep him updated. She didn’t, despite being on her phone

I feel cheated. She had good reviews but now I’m wondering if they were fake.

Was I just really unlucky? If you had a doula what was your experience like?

2 months later I still feel a bit narked about it. When I gave the feedback (said nicely but put across all the points I made above) it was oh ok, I’ll take it on board for next time. No explanation or apology. Feels like a grand wasted - aibu?

Very insensitive and mean of you…

marblemad · 10/10/2022 03:02

Despite my degree being medical based I completely agree, I had a m/c and a stillbirth of twins, both times left me stressed and wrongly guided by terrible midwives at the hospitals I was at. I am beyond anxious to ever give birth again despite longing for my own child, I am now seriously considering the next time I get pregnant having a home birth or a doula for support and comfort. I am so sorry you went through that experience; they sound completely inexperienced!

Anon778833 · 10/10/2022 03:06

Well, clearly, YANBU and this ‘doula’ stole your money. She failed to do what you paid her for!

Also, I don’t blame you at all for feeling you needed a doula with the current state the NHS is in. I had a baby nearly 3 years ago and the way I was treated was shocking! Especially compared to my previous 3 labours. My DD’s father is luckily (in this instance) a very disagreeable man and he fought my corner.

Serinablack · 10/10/2022 03:33

Why did you need a a doula. Wasn’t your DH fit to advocate for you during the labour? Is he normally flaky?

Ihatemyroad · 10/10/2022 03:38

I would’ve absolutely slated her in the review! And I would’ve made it VERY clear I would NOT recommend her.

I’m so sorry you’ve had such an awful experience. She did NOT do what she was paid to do.

The only option you have now is to move on from this and enjoy your new baby.

He was at home with their other child.

The whole concept of a doula, especially if combined with a mother's helper before and after birth sounds great.
Problem is that it sounds very unregulated.
Suppose you could hire a nanny plus cleaner but not wrap around care as not present at birth.

Justkidding55 · 10/10/2022 05:50

Was she a member of doula uk? If so complain to them! Seriously I’m so gutted for you that she was so awful

queenatom · 10/10/2022 05:52

This is a zombie thread!

OriginalUsername3 · 10/10/2022 06:01

Zombie thread but I wonder if OP got anywhere with her complaint? I doubt she'd come back to update, people were right dicks. "I can't understand why you'd want a stranger at your birth." Don't know about anybody else but I'd never met my midwife and I let her put her hand in my fanny and trusted her with my babies life. Sometimes you want a trained professional to do a job.

Kiopa · 10/10/2022 06:12

I'm really sorry this woman was so crap and that you're getting shit from people on this thread. I completely understand why you'd want a doula! When they're good they sound fantastic - someone calm and knowledgeable who is there for you. Clearly when they're bad they're awful. It sounds like you may struggle with small claims and as a mother of a young baby myself I know I wouldn't want to go through that right now. As galling as it is to lose so much money, it may be easier on you not to try pursuing the legal route. I would see if you could get the Google review undeleted (I had no idea that was possible) because that seems much lower effort and it would be important to me that there's a record out there for any other unsuspecting mums to be.

georgarina · 10/10/2022 06:31

Mine had double booked during the time she was supposed to be 24/7 available near my due date, so she wasn’t even there for my birth, she sent some other random person who had only been to 2 births.

Would never get a doula again.

It's frustrating when people don't RTFT but you didn't even read the first paragraph of the OP!

Plus it's a ZOMBIE THREAD!

EmmaDilemma5 · 10/10/2022 06:55

The least you can do is ask for a partial refund. For her lateness and non-participation. Maybe 33% (3% is for the snacks!)

Seriously I would ask her, and explain that you don't feel she met the points of her contract, and that you don't want to have to take it further.

She's exploiting vulnerable people.

Banana2079 · 10/10/2022 07:12

one Thousand pounds to sit next to somebody eat their snacks and drink their drinks and do shit all? I’m in the wrong job
I would never have paid for somebody to sit next to me during birth - you never know who your going to get..why couldn’t your partner do it?
I would never expect a stranger to be fully supportive of me despite them being a Doula I think the whole idea of it is ridiculous unless they are a friend of Family. Take it to the small claims court and get your money back

I can’t believe people pay £1000 to have someone sit next to them.

Dibbydoos · 10/10/2022 07:17

What an awful experience, OP. :(

You've been had.

Anyone can set up as a doula, doesn't mean they are experienced or care.

CheshireDing · 10/10/2022 07:30

Banana to quote yourself ‘I can’t believe’ people don’t read the OP, read other peoples comments and look at the date of the thread 🤔 🙄

ChagSameachDoreen · 10/10/2022 07:34

"Doula" is the new "life coach" - the bastion of flakes and charlatans and gullible people.

MrsDoyle351 · 10/10/2022 07:34

HAVE WE MENTIONED ITS a ZOMBIE thread???

Zonder · 10/10/2022 07:36

So @Banana2079 who do you suggest the OP should have had instead?
DH? He was doing childcare for their eldest
Family? She doesn't have any she could rely on
Friends? She doesn't seem to have ones who are close enough to abandon everything and come running 24/7
MIL? Other posts by OP show grave concerns about her
Doesn't leave many options. But hey, what do I know? I just read the OPs posts!

Novum · 10/10/2022 07:38

kinshasa · 05/04/2022 12:22

Wow missed the post about doula uk.
You didn't say that, drip feed, indeed.
Complain.

Not a drip feed. OP didn't know about doula.uk till someone told her on this thread. It's usually a good idea to read at least all the OP's posts before rushing to criticise.

Serinablack · 10/10/2022 07:40

ZOMBIE THREAD

To be fair, it's not that ancient - about 6 months old - it could easily be a long-running thread. You'd have to look at the date of every single post to see there was a long gap before this was resurrected today.
