To feel cheated by my doula

Yumyumcakes · 05/04/2022 11:04

For my second 2 months old, dh and I made the decision to have a doula as my birth partner as we had no other childcare for our child at home. I didn’t want to go it alone as I was quite nervous of being mistreated, I didn’t have the best first labour.

So I hired a doula and I honestly feel robbed. Robbed not only of money (nearly £1k) but of that supportive presence during labour. I’m actually quite cross about it, of course I gave feedback on how I feel.

The woman I had, drove the wrong way to the hospital taking nearly triple the amount of time. Left me to walk from the carpark alone to the delivery unit whilst she parked the car in active labour, there were a few instances where I needed some extra advocacy when the midwife wasn’t really listening to me (nothing crazy, just preferences like my bum was facing the door and I wasn’t comfortable with being exposed to everyone in the corridor so just asked for a blanket) and nothing, no coachIng, no reminding of breathing techniques, no words of encouragement, no massage, pressure points, reminding to move around… literally nothing. She sat there on her phone and ate my snacks and drank my sports drinks. It was to the extent that the midwife even commented to leave some of the snacks for me and when the doula left 30 mins after birth on how little she did. My husband had one ask, just keep him updated. She didn’t, despite being on her phone

I feel cheated. She had good reviews but now I’m wondering if they were fake.

Was I just really unlucky? If you had a doula what was your experience like?

2 months later I still feel a bit narked about it. When I gave the feedback (said nicely but put across all the points I made above) it was oh ok, I’ll take it on board for next time. No explanation or apology. Feels like a grand wasted - aibu?

@everythingcrossed

I know this may sound a strange question but did you properly meet her beforehand? Was it all done via phone? Because, if you didn't meet her face-to-face, I'd assume the doula was attending another birth and sent this woman in her place.
We’d met f2f twice and chatted on the phone too so it was the same person.

She said she’d attended hundreds as she’d been doing this for 10 years. But she didn’t know the hospital I was delivering at.,, which now makes me wonder if it was all bollox

What an awful experience OP. I do think you have two options - either go ham in publicly warning others via social media etc, or privately seek redress through requesting a refund and, if that is not successful, via small claims etc. I would do the latter and only after that would I write my reviews etc. I don't think it's about the money, but the absolutely appalling service and lack of support you received at a time you needed her most, at your most vulnerable.

Yumyumcakes · 05/04/2022 11:57

@Oriunda

My doula was amazing. I’d be reporting yours, but first I’d be attempting to get some sort of refund.
Is there some sort of governing body?

I’ve looked into it and pretty much any one can be a doula, the course is a few weeks long and not that expensive. My guess is it’s completely unregulated which means you can get some charlatans

LetHimHaveIt · 05/04/2022 11:58

Honestly, OP, you're clearly and understandably distressed, but I'm afraid I actually sniggered at your description. She sounds like a character from
a Catherine Tate sketch show! But then - I have grace doubts re: the efficacy of 'doulas' anyway: I can't decide whether gulping Lucozade Sport is better or worse than burning sage and 'smudging'. A private midwife would've been better. One presumes.

Gonnagetgoing · 05/04/2022 11:59

An ex friend (school friend)’is a doula. However she’s a real new age hippy type and I don’t believe lots of her “work” as I don’t think she’s very sincere. Based on a few dealings with her this is.

I think as a PP said you’ve probably lost the money and I’d concentrate on a healthy birth another way.

LittleGwyneth · 05/04/2022 12:00

The fact that doulas are unregulated is just one of many industries where people are genuinely getting hurt by said lack of regulation. I agree with everyone else, you deserve at least some of your money back.

Yumyumcakes · 05/04/2022 12:00

@Twiglets1

She sounds awful. Nevertheless beyond writing a shitty review to warn others, I think you should try to let it go now and concentrate on your baby and yourself. You are unlikely to be able to recover any money and I think you’re just prolonging the stress
I was just thinking about it now, because we spent our summer holiday money on the doula and I’ve had a shit year so could really use the break but we’ve spent a large portion of the money

Gonnagetgoing · 05/04/2022 12:00

Sorry seen you’ve given birth. Maybe email her with a complaint but unlikely you’d be refunded.

NameChange30 · 05/04/2022 12:01

Wtf is "burning sage and 'smudging'"?!

That's not what doulas are about, not good ones anyway.

I don't like that this is turning into a doula-bashing thread. A good one is worth her weight in gold. This doula was obviously shit. But I don't think she is representative.

What on Earth is smudging?

I’m not really into hippy stuff but I just really wanted someone there you know on team ‘yumyum’

Could you contact Doula UK for advice?

Where did you find this person?

Yumyumcakes · 05/04/2022 12:05

Also couldn’t afford a private midwife that was £3k v 1k.

The intent here isn’t doula bashing, I think there are some really pushing the boundaries of good practice (ie sort of encouraging maybe some dangerous things or likening all medicine to abuse) and evidently some lazy AF ones but I think to have an advocate and someone basically coaching you and giving you all the positive vibes is a really powerful thing

Stath · 05/04/2022 12:05

Bloody hell, you poor love.

I used to work as a doula (also qualified lactation consultant). All my actions and support were centred around the mother and her needs and wants.

I’ve had births where I’ve been pooed on as the (incredible strong) mum has wanting me to press on to her bottom of her back to help the pain so I was in the ‘action zone’ when natural events happened.

Doulas should be the birthing woman’s number one cheerleader/surrogate sister/advocate.
That has meant positive affirmations and physical support with some women and hands-off silent gate keeping for others.

So sorry you’ve had this experience. Definitely get a refund and make sure others know of her shitty ways.

Congratulations on your new baby Flowers

Yumyumcakes · 05/04/2022 12:06

Off a recommendation from another doula I found in doula UK

NameChange30 · 05/04/2022 12:08

So she wasn't a member of Doula UK, then.
You didn't answer my question about whether there was a written agreement?
Doula UK has a code of conduct and a complaints procedure.
Sorry but I think it was an error to choose a doula who was not a member.

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 05/04/2022 12:10

Please take her to the small claims, this is disgraceful.

Movetothebeat · 05/04/2022 12:10

Was this woman actually listed on Doula UK though?

It sounds like you’ve been scammed. The doula who recommended her may or not be aware of this.

thinkfast · 05/04/2022 12:12

I had a doula at my dd's birth. She was a former midwife who no longer wanted to work for the nhs. She:
Brought healthy snacks for me
Chatted / distracted me when I wanted
Walked with me
Massaged
Advocated for me strongly. She was able to ask questions and where appropriate challenge doctors' midwives' suggestions with her knowledge of recent studies. One doctor was very junior. She told him to stop talking and wait as I was having a contraction and couldn't hear him
Explained what the doctors were telling me in a way that I could understand.
Took a photo of me, DH and dd.
After the birth, She also submitted a complaint on my behalf regarding one aspect of my care.

Sorry you had a bad experience OP. I think you should request a refund.

Sorry, yes there was a contract. Admittedly I didn’t check if she was on doula UK, I’ll go and have a look now actually. The other doula definitely was and that doula said she used this woman as her back up doula and they work together lots

And exactly who would she report it to? Anyone can call themselves a doula - there's no formal training, no regulation and I assume this one is self
Marvellousmadness · 05/04/2022 12:15

She wasnt a doula. Just a spammer
Sorry this happened to you

Marvellousmadness · 05/04/2022 12:15

Scammer*

Or just the worst doula in the world perhaps.

Yumyumcakes · 05/04/2022 12:15

She’s on doula uk

OP posts:
Lady0racle · 05/04/2022 12:17

Did you sign any agreement with her? Is there anything in writing that shows what she agreed to do during labour to help you?

If there is, you’re on stronger ground with regard to a refund. I mean, I’d request one anyway but something in writing would be helpful as she clearly didn’t stick to her part of the agreement.

NameChange30 · 05/04/2022 12:19

@Yumyumcakes

She’s on doula uk
That's good, you can refer to their code of conduct and go through their complaints procedure. Links to both at doula.org.uk/about-doulas/
