To be finished with voting Tory

Viviennemary · 03/04/2022 16:47

I've voted Tory in the last couple of elections. Didn't like Corbyn and thought Keir Stammer was a bit feeble. But after that smug performance by Sunak I am totally not going to vote Tory for a very long time. We are now in a position not to be affected too much by recent rises. Not always been that way of course. I wonder if others are feeling the same. But the lack of any sort of help for less well off people makes me absolutely sick. And all decided by a multi millionaire.

I will vote Tory. I am not impressed with them but I will stick with them.

Can you explain why?

ssd · 19/04/2023 10:10

They wont explain honestly.

Zola1 · 19/04/2023 10:17

I think you're unreasonable to have voted Tory ever. I've never seen as much suffering as under a Conservation government.

IJustHadToLookHavingReadTheBook · 19/04/2023 10:19

Better late than never.

I've never voted tory but right now they are the only party that knows what a woman is biologically. Since rapists are being put into womens prisons and womens hospital wards now is the time to say #nothankyou, not #bekind. Its shit tbh

But it’s the Tory government who are doing that, and you are voting for them again?

Gall10 · 19/04/2023 10:37

I’m a lifelong labour supporter….but not at all happy voting for this current bunch of career politicians. I think of it like your football team -you may not like the current manager or owner but there’s nothing on gods earth that will make you change allegiance. I think anyone changing political (or football) allegiance isn’t really a supporter in the first place & only out for it will benefit them personally….not thinking of the whole picture (league!).

Samphiredragonfly · 19/04/2023 10:38

@KimberleyClark mind boggling but it gives them an excuse. The tories certainly know what a woman is biologically but still doesn't stop them treating ordinary woman and children like crap. Why are we supposed to believe them anyway ? Not exactly got a good record for honesty have they !

Their policies benefit my husband (he is the higher earner of our household). I am insulated from their failings.

@Emotionalstorm so you're an 'I'm All Right, Jack'. Fair enough, who cares about people less fortunate than themselves anyway?

Let's hope you never need an ambulance then or, God forbid, are raped.

Even accepting that you don't care about others, this isn't a sensible long or even medium term approach. As society collapses around you, crime rates rise; cities lose their nice shops, restaurants, parks and other amenities, and become unpleasant and more dangerous to visit; the countryside is spoiled; the quality and safety of food goes downhill; all around you people are unhappy and angry and you will get caught up in more road rage incidents for example, and more incidents in which people express their anger at your wealth. Nice things - like good old age care and private healthcare - will become harder to find and more expensive. Culture will go downhill as fewer people will be able to afford it. There will be an increasing brain drain by anyone who can find a way to leave the UK to live somewhere that has not decided to sacrifice everything for the increased wealth of a small number.

I'm sorry, but I have no sympathy for you. You voted for austerity. You voted for poor and disabled people to be demonised and forced to live on less and less. You voted for councils to have their funding stripped, further affecting poor, vulnerable and disabled people. You voted for the deliberate underfunding of education and healthcare. You voted for Brexit.

Suck it up. This is what you deserve.

It's not necessary to have sympathy, but surely non-Tory voters should welcome former Tory voters switching parties, because that's the only way we'll ever get a change of government!

I think the conservatives are better at matters to do with womens rights and I booked a private ambulance when I needed one last year (they cost £450 per trip).

Of the people I know that are less fortunate than myself, they overwhelmingly vote Tory. Why am I expected to vote against my own interest for them? If the majority just voted in their own best interest surely democracy would work as intended.

They don't care about women because they don't care about people. They are not better for women than labour or other parties.

The one thing the Tories are good at is knowing what to say (without meaning any of it).

Please don't let this be the deciding factor. They will not make women's lives better.

Where did that ambulance take you? Because it wouldn’t be given the time of day at my local A&E.

And the Tories are playing games with women’s right, self ID was their idea.

But I don't think the Tories are as bad as you say. I don't think another decade of the Tory government will lead to societal collapse. I've not noticed any of what you have described in the areas where I have homes (Wimbledon and the City of London). I think the surrounding areas have actually gotten nicer in the last decade because they have gentrified. I don't think things would be better under labour and that's the only alternative under the first past the post system.

But your mum is voting Labour, so you said? ...& this has led to family arguments.

When you have a serious accident and are not in position to pay for a private ambulance.... you may not be quite so sanguine.

TBH People voting for their perceived best interests, is exactly what is wrong with this country, some of the most vocal Tories i know, also moan the loudest when they have to pay out £100s in car repairs because they wreck a wheel or tyre in a pot hole, they are too thick to realise that slashing council funding means the choice is Child Social work VS fix a Pot hole.

Emotionalstorm · 19/04/2023 12:31

In fact I think societal collapse is more likely to happen under labour. They will spend too much money and we will end up like Greece.

You are joking. Have you seen how much money the government’s spending? It’s given billions to its mates. We weren’t like Greece with the last Labour government, we were financially stable with effective public services.

Yes my mum is a good person but very idealistic. She constantly gets scammed. She's the sort of person who will buy wilted flowers off an old lady on the motorway on 24 December because she feels sorry for her and wants her to go home and not be in the cold. I would like to have the capacity to worry about every other person like that but I have to put my husband first. It will cause immense friction in our marriage if I vote for a party that impoverishes him.

Bearing in mind, mum also used to vote Tory when we were growing up (and my dad still owned his business).

I've never experienced what you mentioned. Everything is either within walking distance or I just order a taxi. I don't like driving.

whenwhenwhen · 19/04/2023 12:44

I have voted Conservative previously, in national and local elections.

I will never vote Conservative again.

The word "conserve" means to protect from harm, to maintain, to avoid waste and at one point these values were followed by the party.

However, the last 13 years have seen the country irreparably harmed and our reputation and status in the world trashed, its once-great institutions such as the NHS and the BBC irrevocably damaged, and literally billions of pounds "wasted" which I write in inverted commas because I honestly don't think it is natural waste, I think it is pure corruption with bungs to Tory cronies and donors such as Michelle Mone, the list of examples of these cases is almost endless.

The Conservative party today stands for corruption. They only look after themselves, and the people who fund them. They don't give a toss about the vast majority of people in the country.

People will say that "all politicians are like this" but they are not. None are perfect, but the Conservative party over the last 13 years have been an absolute disaster for this country.

Malarandras · 19/04/2023 12:47

Never voted Tory. I can’t vote for any political party recently, I’ve just been spoiling my ballots in protest at how much none of them represent my views.

You do know it’s a secret ballot? He’s not going to be “impoverished”, is he? I’ve read your posts and you’re pretty well off, you’re not going to be on the streets if we have a government that spreads wealth a little more equitably.
