To be finished with voting Tory

Viviennemary · 03/04/2022 16:47

I've voted Tory in the last couple of elections. Didn't like Corbyn and thought Keir Stammer was a bit feeble. But after that smug performance by Sunak I am totally not going to vote Tory for a very long time. We are now in a position not to be affected too much by recent rises. Not always been that way of course. I wonder if others are feeling the same. But the lack of any sort of help for less well off people makes me absolutely sick. And all decided by a multi millionaire.

I never voted tory.

Bit late to regret it now isn't it? This is what YOU voted for. Miserable life's for everyone and grannies freezing to death. Be careful what you wish for.

Ugh this. My ex is constantly Tory bashing on FB when he bloody voted for them!!! He was apparently 'tricked' and 'disillusioned' and therefore deserves empathy. It doesn't spout him from slinging shit at other Tory voters. He's such a fucking clueless and boring cliché.

MissNormaSnockers · 27/04/2022 20:57

Always makes me chuckle when people say ridiculous things like "I'm not voting until there's someone worth voting for" and "I'm abstaining" - that's a bit like saying "I dont like eating dog sh1t or earwax, so i wont order either.".... YOU REALISE YOU'RE GOING TO GET FORCE-FED ONE OR THE OTHER WHETHER YOU LIKE IT OR NOT SO YOU MAY AS WELL PICK THE LESSER OF TWO EVILS, RIGHT?!🤔

ssd · 27/04/2022 20:57

There's a certain type of person who dislikes a lot of the things happening in our country and doesn't equate it to the government in power.

Scary these people have the right to vote.

Probably the same people who had to be taught how to wash their hands as adults and still got it wrong.

Then stop voting for individuals and whether or not you think they are “nice” or not - and start scrutinising policies

Sounds right - in theory.

In practice? At the time of Brexit, I was listening on the radio to people talking for or against Brexit. I was flabbergasted by the prevailing ignorance about how EU really works and the extremely short-sighted reasons people were giving for being for or against a decision that will have an impact for tens of years!

BTW Labor is no better than Tories. To be trusted about as much as letting loonies running the asylum.

Issania87 · 17/04/2023 22:12

My main issue with voting Labour is that their manifesto always sounds great but I wonder how on earth they would fund it. I also would worry being a middle earner because we are squeezed enough by the Tory government, and I think that would only get worse under Labour.

I've no idea who to vote for at the next election because right now, there is no one who represents me to choose.

Blossomtoes · 17/04/2023 22:14

If you read their manifesto you’d see exactly how they’d fund it. And it won’t be by squeezing middle earners.

I voted Tory because I thought they would waste less money on daft schemes. But billions gone on useless PP equipment and furlough fraud. And nothing to be done about it. And contracts for ppe gone to their mates. I voted Brexit because I was sick of Europe calling the shots and challenging our courts. But final for me was Sunak. And trillions grabbed in profit for the power companies and savings never passed on to the customer. All rubber stamped by the tories. A good few steps too far.

How's Brexit working out for you OP?

BlackForestCake · 18/04/2023 00:41

As much as I disagree with labour on the issue I still need to do all in my power to stop continuing austerity

Wes Streeting and Rachel Reeves are pretty clear that they intend to do bugger all to stop continuing austerity.

Viviennemary · 18/04/2023 01:31

Brexit hasn't affected me very much. I've noticed the increase in food prices and stopped buyng a few things on principle. There was a time when they would have really worried me. This Rishi Sunak fiasco has really annoyed me. I was waverng a bit last week when I saw the dreaded Angela Raynor spouting forth on TV. But no I am not going to vote Tory.

You mean they’re going to improve public services by funding them properly with money saved by stopping Tory handouts to all their mates? Austerity is based on Tory ideology, there was never any financial basis for it.

Greenfairydust · 18/04/2023 08:03

Never have and never will vote Tory.

My vote has always gone to Labour or the Lib Dem depending on the election.

I would say that there used to be the odd Tory politicians I could respect but the current lot has truly reached a low point and are basically criminals with posh accents: corrupt, lying, greedy and in the hands of big businesses or foreign powers.

They have have pretty much destroyed the country (the economy, the NHS, our reputation abroad) and polluted our rivers and seas.

I want to see people like Johnson and Hancock in front of a jury. Not to mention Sunak's constant lack of financial transparency scrutinised...

I am actually quite tough on things like criminal sentences (I want to see tougher sentences for rapes/sexual assaults, knife crime and a serious crack down on anti-social behaviour) and controlling immigration (I don't think we have the housing and health infrastructure to continue to take on so many people) but I could never vote for the Tories out of common decency.

I think we had our Trump moment, now it is time to bring back decent politicians and politics.

Here is a novel idea: tax higher earners properly and big corporations so they no longer get away with paying no or little tax...

That should free up some money.

We all know that at the moment the tax burden falls on those on low and medium incomes.

While people like Sunak, Rees-Mogg and so on use clever accounting to pay lower rates.

Thing is, our Trump moment (Brexit) is going to be extremely difficult to roll back, voters have done damage that'll last generations, in many cases, long after they themselves are dead.

Also, its shown to politicians that lying to the public works and has very little in the way of consequences for the liars. Nobody is holding politicians to account for the lies they told, the press and public just let them move on. The homer has gone out of politics and I think it will be very hard to get back.

pointythings · 18/04/2023 18:28

I'm sorry, but I have no sympathy for you. You voted for austerity. You voted for poor and disabled people to be demonised and forced to live on less and less. You voted for councils to have their funding stripped, further affecting poor, vulnerable and disabled people. You voted for the deliberate underfunding of education and healthcare. You voted for Brexit.

Suck it up. This is what you deserve.

MintJulia · 18/04/2023 18:31

YANBU I just wish there was someone convincing to vote for.

Not so... Labour have identified a £25bn difference in taxation between "earned income" and "unearned income" i.e investments, capital gains etc, why should the wealthy not have their investments/BTL property sales taxed at PAYE income tax rates?

Austerity was arguably needed for 3 or 4 years after 2008, then we should have relaxed it and started investing in public services and their staff...

...we didn't, now we can see the problems it has caused in the NHS, Social Care, Police and Education.

Is that what Labour is suggesting?
Didn't tax revenues go up when the 50% tax rate was cut to 45%?
Which big corporations are paying no tax? If you're talking about those on tax avoidance schemes, it's not just this country that's struggling with them. Best will in the world, unless there's an international shift, I can't see how Labour can change that.

Alexandra2001 · 18/04/2023 19:06

@Earlydancing Sunak managed to pay just 22% on millions of investment income over 5 years.

All perfectly above board but should it be? Labour plan on getting rid of this loop hole.

Why should the wealthy pay tax at 20% on very high unearned income but you or i pay over double on our salaries?

The 50% rate wasn't in long enough to find out and other tax changes also took place when that rate was cut.

I will never understand devotion to ANY political party. You are not alone though, there are many other people who will continue to vote the same, no matter what said party does.
