To think I’m not a fucking kid?!

So my dads sister who is my auntie constantly refers to me as a kid or a child.

For context I’m 25 years old, I have a high flying job where I travel the world for it, I have my own house with a mortgage, I own my own car outright and I also have a dog. According to my auntie she still considers me a child/kid because I don’t have a boyfriend and or children which is something I do not want.

It really really frustrates me when she says it, she also constantly says I have no life experience or any grasp on how the world works Confused I have no idea where she’s got that opinion from because some of the countries I’ve travelled to for work are very eye opening…

She is a very bitter woman and she even admits that herself but I sat to her that doesn’t mean she can take it out on me. I no longer speak to her but she always ask my dad about me.

My uncle is like this with me. For some reason he thinks my life is funded by my parents (I'm married, with a baby & mortgage!). Makes comments like "that must've set your dad back a bit". I bloody wish!
He's not like this at all with my brother and I've never been a parent funded princess. I just let it pass me by and he can't leave comments on my SM. Much easier!

@IamtheDevilsAvocado but all experience isn’t equal is it? If you qualify experience with leaving a social bubble you’re overlooking any experience that is gained by the particular situations of those in the bubble.

For instance, a young carer who continues to care for a progressively ill family member into their thirties has a lot of experience that can’t be recreated or accessed by travelling or attending university. It’s all experience and none of it is more or less worth than the other.

A smaller life doesn’t necessarily translate into a static one.

You may have a high flying job, but you sound very immature.
We have adult children, all in their 30's but when talking about them we still refer to them as "the kids" because they are and always will be our kids.
You are 25 years old, you have hardly any life experience. That really shows in your attitude.

Ha ha! Totally understand the frustration! My parents once tried to tell me "where to cross the road" when I was 41! 😂 You will always be the baby to some people, it's a reflection on them, not you. Don't let it get to you, you just have to laugh it off.

Just tell dickheads to fuck off, it really is very theraputic.

"Fuck off. You're an ignorant old bat."

There. Then tell your dad to stop blabbing about you.

What a weird old lady, so obsessed with you.

Your reaction nor your post show you to be mature though, to be honest. I hope you've not cut her out just because of this!

It's just fact, really, too, that you are inexperienced in life compared to most. You're young, that's just the way it is, and you'll realise as you mature that you've overreacted to this. I think most people realise as they get older that they'd have handled things differently if they were older/more experienced.

Parents still refer to us as the 'kids' and we're in our 50s!!

Buggersticks · 04/04/2022 14:58

....add to that, with spouses and children etc of our own!
