Female swimmers beaten by transgender athlete stage podium protest at ‘unfair’ result

When will the rules change as I completely agree this is unfair and I expect that you will all largely agree with me.

For anyone that doesn't agree, please explain your reasoning to help me better understand.

This reminds me of the weightlifting story from last year.

People that are born female and people who are born male should not be competing in these events together. Our physical bodies are not comparable.

Have as many genders as you can think of, but there are only two possible sexes that you can be born as and that is what eligibility in these competitions should be based on.

Don't know how to add poll.

There are some sports where men and women compete together/against one another.

Not many and they generally involve horses

"and dont even understand what gender dysphoria is."

You insult us. Most of us MN'ers are intelligent. Many of us have SN children, are interested in MH, And know exactly what gender dysphoria is.

@WiddlinDiddling

I don't think we should divide sports up into men/women necessarily anyway.

There are some sports where men and women compete together/against one another.

Where it matters.. why can't competitors be divided by height/weight/achievement..

Then everyones competing against people of a similar ability to them - improve your ability, move up a category and again, compete against those of a similar ability.

The fault does not lie with transgender people wishing to compete at sports - the fault lies with sports categorising people the wrong way.

What competitive sports, and to what level have you ever competed? This idea is ridiculously stupid, and would be the end of competitive women's sport.

Presumably you have never competed or have daughters, nieces, female friends who do?
cocog · 19/03/2022 18:16

I worry about the future I am in no way against people dressing how ever but I am uncomfortable with the thought of an adult male in changing rooms/toilets for females! The majority of transgender people mean no harm and it’s not these people I’m particularly bothered by but I believe some men will be using it as an excuse to gain access to women/girls and assaults are already happening in prisons hospitals this needs careful assessment going forward but honestly if a transgender male was going to be in a toilet I wouldn’t be completely happy to use or let my daughters go in alone we have always had separate facilities for a reason. I actually believe that rapists and pedophiles are saying they are transgender as an opportunity to gain access to females as it’s a perfect opportunity and within the law.

Theeyeballsinthefuckingsky · 19/03/2022 18:16

Yes let’s turn the entire world of sport upside down and rewrite the rules so that a small number of men don’t have their feelings hurt 🙄🙄

Ffs!!

Waitwhat23 · 19/03/2022 18:19

@PurgatoryOfPotholes

Is that where the phrase ‘I nearly had kittens’ comes from?

Yep! There was also an allied belief that if a pregnant woman experienced abdominal pain after a shock, it was because the shock had made her baby change into one or more kittens and they were clawing.

We in the 21st century are much more superior. We don't think babies can change species...

Huh. I didn't know that! I always find idioms fascinating as, shown by your example, there's usually some weird (usually ancient) reason behind them.

I do wonder if this bizarre period of history will manifest itself into idioms in the future...

JellySaurus · 19/03/2022 18:20

the fault lies with sports categorising people the wrong way

Indeed. The fault lies with sports categorising males as women.

If they did that Lia would only be competing against men. I wonder how 'she' would feel about that!

I was in a competitive sport and represented my country in juniors (didn't make the cut from age 17). Anyway I remember being in primary and I could beat ALL the boys in a running race, from me being in year 3 to year 6 I was the fastest in the school. (only 120 kids so not massive). I distinctly remember being 11/12 and challenging boys to races and I started getting my arse kicked. That is my own personal experience.

Any person who has played sport (or even just thought about it) understands the biological difference, especially when puberty hits.

This is a travesty for women.

MoiraQ · 19/03/2022 18:27

I've said it before on here. Part of the problem is many women think equality means we are equal to men in any task, especially younger women. But unless you've seriously played or followed a sport, you don't always realise the difference in male and female sporting attainment. My DD was very dismissive of this until she took up rugby.

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 19/03/2022 18:30

Once you find out the historical context, most idioms make sense.

For example, "as precious as the apple of his/her eye". I found an old fairy tale once that demonstrated that our predecessors thought that the pupil of the eye was a solid body, and that it would be possible to steal it through magical means or lose it through injury, leaving the owner blind.

So it was a very precious (if imaginary) body part!

The photo of the athletes on the podiums is a really strong image.
I do think it is a wake up call to some who might not have realised what they were aligning themselves with. Those who continue to defend it show themselves clearly for who they are.

Crystalvas · 19/03/2022 18:36

Some people are born with 2 sets of genitals.

Tell you what, post the links to the peer reviewed papers on this.

What is the medical condition?

Their called Hermaphrodites. A person born with male and female sex organs.

Exactly so. It’s a partnership with an animal.

The animal also needs to be fit, sound and well trained, and talented.

Lia Thomas is not one of them.

Would someone explain to me "misgendering someone will get you banned on here?" Not sure of what exactly that means.

I think if you refer to certain biological men as “he” your post will be deleted. I assume if you keep doing it you get banned.
MoiraQ · 19/03/2022 18:42

@crystalvas

Hermaphrodite is an offensive term and you might want to read what the this intersex charity says about it.

Theeyeballsinthefuckingsky · 19/03/2022 18:42

It means that if you call LT ‘he’ you will get a ban

It’s why posts on FWR often use names rather than pronouns

These genitalia are often ambiguous . Definitely not a fully functional sets of penis and testicles and female genitalia with womb and ovaries.
Nnique · 19/03/2022 18:42

Let’s you say you wrote he when someone wants to be called something else (let’s say a cat). Or you used a word which begins with m but isn’t the word male. Or you accidentally said they when you had meant to say something else. Or you didn’t say they when you were supposed to.

Something like that (for illustrative purposes only).

What you have done is the equivalent of answering a question asking you to prove that winged horses exist with "it's called a pegasus".

Hermaphrodites and the pegasus, and women with snakes for hair are all mythological concept the classical Greeks believed in.

They do not actually exist, although ancient Greek vases may show pictures of all of them.
