Why do people insist on smoking in doorways!?

If you want to go into a shop or a pub why is it acceptable to get blasted in the face with second hand smoke?

You go to a CHILDREN’S play park where you'll find groups of parents smoking....
School gates....

I mean Really!!!!

Why isn't smoking banned in outdoor public places yet!?

It's crazy.

trying your best to get a different horrible illness doesn’t negate that risk.

In this instance it does because dementia is usually a disease of old age.

It’s also a risk factor in smokers. So you’re not negating that risk by smoking, you’re doubling it.

@IgiveupallthenamesIwantedareg0

If there was a total ban on smoking, there would be a HUGE tax loss which you, OP, and all the other moaners would have to cover. You'll probably post another time about your kid wasn't invited to a party, somebody seemed to be drunk within a ten mile radius of you, your neighbours' baby three streets away was crying too loud when yours was having the afternoon nap and fireworks on Bonfire Night! Get a life -live and let live! Do you drive a car? You know, petro lfumes .....................
Smoking is disgusting. Happy for people to do it when not around me. But its blowing smoke all over me/in my direction so I breathe it in that I object to. And I have met very few considerate smokers unfortunately. So I agree with OP about people standing in doorways etc.

Smoking outside I have no issue with if people do it away from others who don't want it blown on them.

I think its a stretch to say someone who doesn't like smoke being blown on them complains about the other things you've listed which really aren't in the same league.

RampantIvy · 13/03/2022 09:55

Around 14% of adults smoke in the UK. How significant would the tax loss be?

Blossomtoes · 13/03/2022 10:05

It’s also a risk factor in smokers.

Like I said, that depends on what research you read. I posted a link that says it makes no difference.

No, it doesn’t. The article is about data collection and how it’s used. It’s about the flaw in the measurement guide, not a categorical result.

@Sometimeswinning

Sorry. I smoke in the doorway if its raining or cold. But I never smoke in public during the day.

Sorry to all those offended. I will carry on though.

Well you are a delight aren't you 🙂

@MangoSeason

You would love my Aussie state, OP

“Outdoor smoke-free public areas

No smoking:

at and within 5 metres of public transport waiting points such as bus stops, taxi ranks, and ferry terminals
at or within 10 metres of campsites and public facilities at national parks such as:
picnic tables
toilet blocks
barbecues
visitor information centres
roofed shelters
jetties, boat ramps and landing stages
at or within 10 metres of playing and viewing areas during organised under-18 sporting events
within 5 metres of non-residential building entrances
at outdoor pedestrian malls
at government precincts around certain state government buildings (including the land around prescribed buildings and adjacent footpaths and nature strips)
at or within 10 metres of public skate parks and children’s outdoor playground equipment
at patrolled beaches between the flags
at public swimming facilities
at prescribed outdoor swimming areas (e.g. artificial beaches and lagoons)
at major sports or events facilities.”

Plus we have smoker’s pens which are tiny fenced off smoking areas outside concert and sporting facilities.

Yes I would love it there.

Why isn't this a thing here?😡

It would be offset by the savings to the NHS in the long run.
Gwenhwyfar · 13/03/2022 10:37

"I doubt anyone who’s watched someone die from dementia would say it’s an easier way to go. It’s the worst disease going."

It really depends.

Kendodd · 13/03/2022 10:38

Worst thing, outdoor restaurant tables when the table next to you are full of smokers.

Gwenhwyfar · 13/03/2022 10:39

@Riseholme

I don’t smoke but I do drink presumably like most of pp’s. Smokers are much less likely to harm others than drinkers. Unless we are prepared to ban alcohol consumption then it’s hypocritical to pillory smokers.
Silly comparison. Alcohol doesn't harm people not ingesting it. Drunk people might do, but not the alcohol itself, whereas smoke does harm non smokers.
AlwaysLatte · 13/03/2022 10:40

I hate cigarette smoke, it's disgusting and so terrible for health. They should be banned full stop.

Gowithme · 13/03/2022 10:44

I read somewhere that they were going to ban smoking at beaches in Spain, it should have been done everywhere long before now IMO. Who wants their child digging in the sand and finding dog ends? So disgusting. The other one is smoking outside hospitals, I don't know if it's still allowed but no, just no. I also loathe people smoking at bus stops when you're forced to stand there next to them. Smoking is such a grim habit.

Blossomtoes · 13/03/2022 10:51

It really depends

It really doesn’t. Watching someone you love disappear by degrees over a period of years is bloody awful. Dementia is a vile, disgusting disease.

Patienceisntvirtuous · 13/03/2022 10:56

Your grammar irritates me far more than people smoking.

Hyenaormeercat · 13/03/2022 11:00

Round here smoking pot seems to have overtaken cigarettes. While I'm walking ddog you can smell it walking past peoples houses. 30 yrs ago it would have been an ordinary fag. Vaping seems to be more popluar than ordinary cigs too.

CounsellorTroi · 13/03/2022 11:01

I would rather die from dementia than motor neurone disease. If I ever get diagnosed with that I’m booking my flight to Switzerland.

Alonelonelylonersbadidea · 13/03/2022 11:06

I have an employee who smokes and when he comes into my office, my office smells for an hour or so after.
For me, don't know why, smoke (and therefore smokers) smells like shit, actual shit, and makes me nauseous.
I have to open the windows when he has left to ventilate and go out for a coffee.

The doorways thing is very irritating. Luckily we have a no smoking in doorways policy.

Blossomtoes · 13/03/2022 11:33

That’s an absolutely dreadful thing to say. By all means say that MND is an awful way to die but please don’t kid yourself that dementia is better.
CounsellorTroi · 13/03/2022 11:51

@Blossomtoes my mum had dementia and I’ve watched a friend die of motor neurone. I’m not posting from a position of ignorance here.

bridgi70 · 13/03/2022 12:46

Not really:

The cost of smoking to the UK Government is approximately £12.6 billion a year, made up of £1.4 billion spent on social care for smoking related care needs, £2.5 billion spent on NHS services and £8.6 billion of lost productivity in businesses.

In 2020/21, tobacco duty tax receipts in the United Kingdom amounted to approximately 9.96 billion British pounds.

Not sure about your maths skills.

MrsBerthaRochester · 13/03/2022 13:24

Yanbu. I was brought up in a family of smokers and I HATE it. Even the slightest hint of smoke makes me cough uncontrolably and if its weed it also makes me puke.
Line the lot of them and let them have it.

BashfulClam · 13/03/2022 13:48

I dint want it banned but I’d rather they didn’t smoke in doorways as people need access. I used to work in an office that was next to a pubs. We had storm doors then the glass door into the offices and smokers lived to congregate in there. One night ad I was licking up I had to ask a guy smoking to move so I could close abs lock the outer doors. He got really intimidating and I my face about finishing his fucking fag and some ugly cunt like me wasn’t going to stop him. I told him to move and he threatened to put his cigarette out in my eye. Lovely! I wax terrified but had to stand my ground. He then threw his lit cigarette at me and walked off. I’d also prefer designated smoking areas in pub gardens to allow non smokers etc to enjoy a drink and meal outside without it.
