Why do people insist on smoking in doorways!?

If you want to go into a shop or a pub why is it acceptable to get blasted in the face with second hand smoke?

You go to a CHILDREN’S play park where you'll find groups of parents smoking....
School gates....

I mean Really!!!!

Why isn't smoking banned in outdoor public places yet!?

It's crazy.

@Riseholme

I don’t smoke but I do drink presumably like most of pp’s. Smokers are much less likely to harm others than drinkers. Unless we are prepared to ban alcohol consumption then it’s hypocritical to pillory smokers.
No it isn’t - you can be a smoker and a drinker. They aren’t mutually exclusive.
ImInStealthMode · 13/03/2022 07:19

@BottleBrushTree

No normal person would think it socially acceptable to have extreme body odour or drop smelly fart bombs in the presence of other people but smokers seem to think it’s perfectly fine to have their vile and smelly ciggies polluting everyone else’s airspace. Smokers are gross.
You obviously haven't been in a pub for a while. Plenty of BO and farts. At least the smokers have to take their stink outside.
MintyFreshBreath · 13/03/2022 07:25

Smoking is so gross. Smoking in doorways is so selfish but smokers are generally an entitled bunch who think its fine to blow smoke in people’s faces. I doubt they’d like it if I coughed on them.

Againstmachine · 13/03/2022 07:29

I'm not so bothered about the smoke it's usually they are stood in way and half of time they don't even move.

Don't stand in doorways smoking or not.

CounsellorTroi · 13/03/2022 07:55

Do you feel the same about food addicts?

Selfish for risking their health and leaving loved ones alone?

You can’t give up eating. You can give up smoking.

HELLITHURT · 13/03/2022 08:30

That's a ridiculous statement!

No, you can't give up eating, but you can give up unhealthy eating!

The two ways of eating are totally different.

Honestly, as I've said I'm a massive anti smoker but the way some people on here are talking about them is ridiculous! You'd think they were breaking the law.

MangoSeason · 13/03/2022 08:36

You would love my Aussie state, OP

“Outdoor smoke-free public areas

No smoking:

at and within 5 metres of public transport waiting points such as bus stops, taxi ranks, and ferry terminals
at or within 10 metres of campsites and public facilities at national parks such as:
picnic tables
toilet blocks
barbecues
visitor information centres
roofed shelters
jetties, boat ramps and landing stages
at or within 10 metres of playing and viewing areas during organised under-18 sporting events
within 5 metres of non-residential building entrances
at outdoor pedestrian malls
at government precincts around certain state government buildings (including the land around prescribed buildings and adjacent footpaths and nature strips)
at or within 10 metres of public skate parks and children’s outdoor playground equipment
at patrolled beaches between the flags
at public swimming facilities
at prescribed outdoor swimming areas (e.g. artificial beaches and lagoons)
at major sports or events facilities.”

Plus we have smoker’s pens which are tiny fenced off smoking areas outside concert and sporting facilities.

CrustyCrackers · 13/03/2022 08:52

Smokers only annoy me when they apologise for smoking outside. They are allowed to and its my choice if I stay or move
Dear God, sniffing a bit of smoke outside for a bit is not going to ruin my day

Catmemes · 13/03/2022 08:52
@Catmemes I'm sorry to hear about your mum but you were the one with the patronising statement.

I don't imagine addicts see their addiction as any more 'fun and games' than your mum did.

Do you also tell people with eating disorders 'It's all fun and games until they die of obesity related conditions?'
Going by some of the comments here, yeah I'd say a lot of people don't see smoking as something that will actually maybe kill them eventually. And of course I'd say the same about obesity. Why wouldn't I?

Blossomtoes · 13/03/2022 09:11

I'd say a lot of people don't see smoking as something that will actually maybe kill them eventually.

Maybe that’s because smoking isn’t guaranteed to kill you. Most people have a relative who smoked all their life and died of old age. Equally a lot of people who get lung cancer have never smoked in their lives. I used to see smoking as an insurance policy, hoping a smoking related disease would kill me before dementia kicked in. My genes mean there’s a very strong chance of dementia, I’d rather die of something else.

RampantIvy · 13/03/2022 09:28

Most people have a relative who smoked all their life and died of old age.

Anecdata should not be confused with scientific research and facts.

FACT 1: 70% of lung cancer cases in the UK are caused by smoking
FACT 2: It causes cancer in many other parts of the body
FACT 3: Smoking is the largest cause of cancer in the UK
FACT 4: It damages your heart and blood circulation and increases the risk of stroke and heart attack
FACT 5: it damages your lungs and can cause COPD (my mum died from this, and it is a horrible disease)

All the above facts are taken from the NHS website and Cancer Research UK BTW.

The fact that your great aubtie Mabel smoked 40 a day and lived to 95 is irrelevant and not a valid argument.

Every long term smoker I know has a horrible cough and gurgles when they laugh.

All that said, I don't really care if other people smoke. It is their (informed) choice. As long as they don't smoke in my personal space. And to be fair, of the few smokers I know personally they are all considerate enough not to do so.

ClariceQuiff · 13/03/2022 09:39

I think you're slightly missing the point, RampantIvy. We all have to die of something - some might feel a smoking-related disease would be a better way to go than other conditions such as dementia

Blossomtoes · 13/03/2022 09:40

Of course not. Yet you offer it to support your arguement. 😂

You do realise smoking is associated with an increased risk of dementia?

@bridgi70 I am an adult thank you, and have you just joined to be an arse.

Pumperthepumper · 13/03/2022 09:44

I was just about to post about the increased risks of dementia in smokers. Also, I doubt anyone who’s watched someone die from a smoking-related lung condition would say it’s an easier way to go.

Blossomtoes · 13/03/2022 09:46

You do realise smoking is associated with an increased risk of dementia?

Depends where you take your evidence from. In any event, if you’re pretty much guaranteed to get it anyway there’s no harm in increasing the risk of something else taking you first.

You can’t give up eating. You can give up smoking.

Really grasping at straws there.

You can give up binge eating, you can give up eating junk, you can give up consuming too many calories. People do this all the time just like people give up smoking. It's still kicking an addiction and it's still incredibly hard.

Blossomtoes · 13/03/2022 09:48

Also, I doubt anyone who’s watched someone die from a smoking-related lung condition would say it’s an easier way to go.

I doubt anyone who’s watched someone die from dementia would say it’s an easier way to go. It’s the worst disease going.

That’s really twisted logic Blossom. If you were worried about genetic illness, trying your best to get a different horrible illness doesn’t negate that risk.

I have watched my mum slowly deteriorate from emphysema - hearing her cough and gurgle and struggle for every breath was heartbreaking and disgusting at the same time. I also watched my MIL quickly deteriorate from alzheimers. Neither is a nice way to go. They are as bad as each other.

Blossomtoes · 13/03/2022 09:49

My life, my logic and nothing to do with anyone else. 🤷‍♀️

Absolutely. So why risk both at the same time?
